What do you think the reason people are getting angry on Final Fantasy?

Posted

I know you'll say: Didn't we talk about this over 9000(insert overused meme here) times before??

Yeah, but let's look at it from another way, just post your own reasons and feel free to ignore my own

In your personal opinion, why do you think people, not only Final Fantasy fans, are getting angry on the series whenever a new entry is announced??I mean there is always that atmosphere of doubt that the series didn't have during past generations.

I think what some people(especially those who say the brand is okay, fine and dandy as of now) don't realize is that.

Final Fantasy is a huge ...HUUUUGE BRAND,it's one of the most influential franchises of all time,it's considered by many to be the mother of all RPGs that was born after the 80's since the Dragon Quest series didn't risk going outside of Japan like Final Fantasy did. It's as big as Zelda if not bigger.A lot of RPGs were inspired by Final Fantasy's battle mechanics, from Pokemon to Tales of to Shin Megami Tensei...the list goes on.It has even changed some people's lives by it's story-telling and the messages it was trying to convey through it's stories. It has introduced the world to a genre that not many people were expecting it would've succeed back then. The gaming world were always going crazy whenever a new Final Fantasy game was announced ever since Final Fantasy VII's huge impact on the RPG genre. It was a huge system seller for Sony's Systems back in the Ps1 and Ps2 era.It was an award winning franchises that many have tried to mimic. It's the second best selling RPG series falling only behind Pokemon.

That's why whenever a new entry in the series is announced, expectations are high. You have no idea how much hype Final Fantasy XIII had when it was first announced back in 2006....it was up the frickin roof, people were going crazy over it and most RPG forums were talking about it as if it's gonna be the holy grail of RPGs and how it'll be the best Ps3 game ever(before it went to the Xbox 360 anyway). The Final Fantasy series has set many standards for JRPGS that you would expect the series to follow like beautiful lively worlds,a huge map to explore, challenging boss fights, outstanding story telling and a fantastic soundtrack.

It was natural that there is gonna be  huge expectations for Final Fantasy XIII as it was expected to fill a massive feet and give the JRPG genre the help it desperately needed in the previous console generation.

And for Final Fantasy XIII to fail to deliver 97% of it's promises and almost made the JRPG a joke, can you really blame people for getting angry at Square Enix and doubt their competence???

Yes every franchise has to have it's black sheep entry like FF X-2,but even though X-2 was bad,it didn't massively damage the Final Fantasy brand as it's pretty much a spin-off game branched from a main title just like Dirge of Cerberus FFVII or heck even FF Mystic Quest didn't harm the brand at all despite being a bad game because it's a little spin-off.

Whether you hate the game or like it there is something that can't be denied.

Final Fantasy XIII was the Sonic 06 of the Final Fantasy franchise. It made a huge negative impact on the franchises reputation and also divided the FF fanbase just like what Sonic 06 did.

And the first version of FFXIV was an absolute disaster that costs the company to lose a shit ton of money that they never expected lose in eons

Even Square Enix themselves admitted that the brand is greatly damaged and even Toriyama himself realized that his decision on turning it into Final Hallway XIII was a bullshit decision

http://www.novacrystallis.com/2013/10/square-enix-has-formed-a-final-fantasy-committee-to-ensure-series-quality/

I know that the Realm Reborn version of FFXIV has been a success so far with over 1.5 million subscribers,Lightning Returns FFXIII is shaping to be a good game and Final Fantasy XV(Versus XIII) might be the biggest entry in the series's history(Seriously after 7 years in development there is not even a single room for failure)

But with Square's recent embrace of the iOS market that cost them to lose 1.8 billion yen and their announcement of of the FF6 and FF7 remakes on iOS,I can't help but to get worried about what's gonna happen to the in the next generation where making games will cost even more money and more budget??Yes they're in a much better shape than Capcom, but for how long???

I'm not rambling about this because I'm a nostalgia whore of the past or some shit like that no.I'm just a huge fan of Square Enix's work.

I don't want to see franchises like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts becoming a laughing spot in the gaming industry just because the corporate idiots at the company are just pursuing that mobileandroid dollar and pursue that cheap cash-in ways of easy money that will cost them to lose more than what they've gained

Okay,I'm done bullshitting my usual bullshit, feel free to either say(This thread again??,come on I know some of you are gonna say it) or say what you think of What's the future is holding for the former RPG behemoth.

I hate XIII for the battle system and gameplay. The storyline and characters I love, especially Lightning. I personally believe Ali, the VA, did a subpar job in XIII but in XIII 2 she improved drastically. The first XIII? Yes, it sucked. XIII 2? Square made up for their screwups, at least halfway.

Personally...Final Fantasy 15 and Kingdom Hearts 3 will be the deciding factors in Square Enix's standing with me.

My personal opinion to why people bitch at new Final Fantasy titles is because it might not play like their favorite(s) and they will go out of their way to look for reasons for why they should dislike it.

In all seriousness, I don't think of games in terms of their companies.  To me, Squeenix is a vague, faceless thing attached to games I just happen to like that just happen to belong to the same franchise by the same company.  I also think that having numerous titles in a franchise isn't bad in and of itself, but when you attach numbers to them, it gives the illusion of selling out when the same logic can be applied to, say, Mario or Zelda or Pokemon (but even those series have complaints of selling out).

Fool. This thread again??

Final Fantasy XIII was the Sonic 06 of the Final Fantasy franchise. It made a huge negative impact on the franchises reputation and also divided the FF fanbase just like what Sonic 06 did.

I believe that Sonic Adventure is the game that divided the "fan-base" of Sonic the Hedgehog; Sonic 06 simply exacerbated the problem.

Final Fantasy is a huge ...HUUUUGE BRAND,it's one of the most influential franchises of all time,it's considered by many to be the mother of all RPGs that was born after the 80's since the Dragon Quest series didn't risk going outside of Japan like Final Fantasy did.

Just wanted to comment that Dragon Quest games have been localized since the NES days. Besides the first one being a best-seller, they just never did as well as in Japan, so Enix closed its localization branches during the SNES days and we never got DQ5 or 6; but when DQ7 came along they started bringing them back over here. Also, just because I'm anal like that, technical if anything FF is the mother of JRPGs since, for one thing, rogue-like games have existed for years since the 70s with Wizardry and Ultima, and Dragon Quest was the first to condense the mechanics of tabletop games down into a video game. Final Fantasy just went further than that and ultimately paid off in the long run because it just did better worldwide compared to the Dragon Quest games.

Anyway, Final Fantasy just doesn't appeal to me anymore since it's moved so far away from the high fantasy roots and now is just a cancer for generic RPG character designs and archetypes that get recycled through their games, along with how much fanservice is in Lightning Returns  and with how I feel like it's being presented as "SHE'S BACK! YOU ASKED FOR IT! WE EVEN STUCK HER NAME IN FRONT OF THE TITLE BECAUSE SHE'S THAT IMPORTANT!" I feel like this explains it best:

Of course I love the spinoffs like the Chocobo mystery dungeon games, but I digress. I just don't find Final Fantasy as a series that appealing anymore.

Of course THE HATE FOR FF ALL GOES TO XIII AND BARELY ANY OTHER TITLE, LIKE IT ALWAYS F*CKING DOES. *facepalm* I am so sick of this.

Just you wait. And im not talking to you alone Metal, im talking TO ALL THE FF13 HATERS. Lightning Returns is gonna be ONE OF THE BEST FF GAMES TO DATE. IT WILL MAKE PEOPLE MORE PEOPLE APPRECIATE AND LIKE XIII, AND THEN YOU'LL SEE HOW GOOD THESE GAMES REALLY FREAKING ARE. JUST YOU FUDGING WAIT!!! O_O

BUT WHAT ABOUT LIGHTNING RETURNS?!?!? *looks at you with sad eyes* :(

Lightning Returns is not as important as 15 or KH3. While it might matter to the 13 arc...XV and KH3 are more important then that.

Its understandable that people get angry and FF13 maybe be main reason for all this, but Square made a bunch of other bad decisions in the last cople of years and that got people even more angry and they took that rage on the FF franchise(especially FF13).

I don't like FF13,but I don't hate the game like some people do,but I guess that's because I didn't care about FF during the FF13 hype.

i love how people play the first 3 minutes of ff13 and deem it a failure

While I don't like XIII anymore,I admit that I doesn't hate it as much as other bad games like Sonic 06.

And while I was observing the XIII hype I didn't care about FF at that point and that explains why I loved it for a while before realizing how so many things about it was so wrong.

And I know Square's worst decision was the FF The Spirit Within movie that almost sent them to bankruptcy before they fused with Enix, but even that horrible movie didn't affect people's love of the series

i love how people play the first 3 minutes of ff13 and deem it a failure

I've played 70 hours into the game and that includes the 40 hours of the story and 20 hours I spent completing  some of the missions in Gran Pulse

My personal reason is probably that the newer games lack the feel the previous ones did. Ever since they went to the Playstation (Insert comment about how I must hate Sony here, even though I don't hate Sony. I actually enjoy quite a few games on their systems), the main series games began to try too hard. They tried to seem cinematic, or like some crazy epic adventure, or super crazy technology even though it's called fantasy. I honestly think that the old school medieval clash with Paladins, wizards, and the likes are far more fun and interesting than gunblades and spaceships or whatever other crap they've put in the newer ones. The only exception to this is X, which I love. Not to mention that they over-complicate not only the story lines, but the gameplay. Because drawing magic from enemies for hours on end is fun, right?

Tell me about it

And I thought Spoony was exaggerating about drawing magic in FF8...only to find out he was right.

Not to mention that the stupid junctioning system allows you to break the game and be overpowered if you're willing to spend 8 hours junctioning magic.

While I like VII(like,not worship)my favorites are 4 and 9

4 for it's grand and epic story that's easy to understand and feel for the characters in it....Cecil in particular is the most mature FF protagonist in the series without being the emos that Cloud(in Advent Children) and Squall are.Not to mention the battle system for me is the best in the series

and 9 for bringing back what I loved about FF4's Battle system, having a great story and introducing  the most energetic, funniest and relatable protaginist in the series....Zidane.....boy do I love Zidane

My favorites are 4 and 6. 4 for pretty much the same reason as you, and 6 because I just find it to be the perfect example of what a turn based JRPG should be like. I'm not saying everything else should copy it, but the level of innovation, the story, the gameplay... All of it was perfect. I think the series declined in quality after VI, but IX was good, and X was as enjoyable as the SNES games were to me, so those ones were done well. I've heard that XIII-2 is good, also.

XIII-2 is a good game but the bad reputation of the original XIII affected it in the eyes of FF fans.

Speaking of 4 Golbez IS A FREAKIN BADASS!!!

despite being not the main villan of FF4,but his design and the villainous acts he committed during the control of ZemusZeromus makes him the most intimidating a Final Fantasy villian can be.

Which is something I unfortunately I can't say about Jackasses like Galenth Dysley or stupid hookers like Ultimecia

Golbez, Gilgamesh, and Kefka are the best villains that Final Fantasy has ever had, no doubt about it. :D

It was a horrible game, and I am not just talking about in FF standards. Also people think Lightning Returns is going to be some awesome ass game. Yeah it might be alright compared to XIII but it is no where near going to be as good as most FF titles. XIII gets a lot of hate because they changed so much from normal FF's. But that isn't the only reason it gets hate, it actually really is just a bad all round game. Also just to add I have played both XIII/-2.

Its all around bad in your eyes. It all really comes down to preference. There are some people who like XIII and hate XIII-2, and vice versa. And there are also people like me who like both games. Lightning Returns will be good, it looks like they're trying to make it more fantasy like, like with the early installments to get fans back, im sure it will do really well, and so do many other people here like Metal snake and Oathkeeper136.

  • 2 weeks later...

personally i think it's because of X, i know allot of people love this game and say it's the greatest rpg ever made, however it brought allot of things with it that made not feel like older titles (mainly 1-6 but to a lesser degree 7-9). Those certain things are also present in 12 and 13 (not sure about 13-2 or the other one though). while they did firetruck up originally on xiv, a realm reborn is absolutely amazing and from what we've heard and seen of XV it's looking amazing as well and will probably bring back allot of that old school final fantasy feeling regardless of gameplay
