Nintendo Working On Their Next Platform?

Posted

A rumour that has originated on NeoGAF suggests that Nintendo started working on a brand new platform in early 2013. The platform is supposedly a handheld, which would make it the successor to the Nintendo 3DS. This is a rumour, but it’s likely that Nintendo has already begun planning the followup to the successful 3DS console.

Almost certainly off-topic, but I don’t quite want to make a new thread, because it would go to shit quickly. Also, I’d need to post a source, and I don’t really want to get people in trouble. Anyway, Nintendo apparently started working on a new platform in early 2013 and has already selected a vendor for the SoC after talking to several potential candidates. The SoC might be based on an existing design, but will be changed to fit Nintendo’s requirements. I assume it’s for their next handheld, though.

I won't be suprised if this turns out to be true because I remember when they started making the GameCube two months after the release of the N64. And work on the Wii U didn't start until about 2008. Plus, I remember somewhere that Nintendo said that they are already making plans for their next console. And if they are making a new handheld console now then I don't expect to see it until about 3 years because the 3DS still has plenty of life in it. As for the Wii U. It still has about 6 years at least until another new Nintendo console replaces it.

nice find, i hope its true!! xD

Wait a new handheld?

That Rumor is just bullshit just by that statement!!

the 3DS hasn't even finished it's third year in the market

It'll be a very long time before a new handheld is released as we  got the 3DS looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong after the DS was released.

Maybe it's just another revision of the 3DS just like the 3DS XL and the 2DS

It's most likely true since it's common for the R&D team of a game company to start development on a next gen console a year or two after their recent new console just came out. Because development for a new console needs a lot of time. Plus, this gives the devs enough time to make dev kits for any 3rd party companies to hop on and support that said system.

It's most likely to be a new handheld since the 3DS  came out 3 years ago and the Wii U only camr out last year. But it's not likely we'll hear more information about Nintendo's new console until 3 or 4 years later though.

Nobody said they are going to release the handheld now, they just started making plans for it, which is normal.

I know planning starts early

But I hate some stupid sites that reads it as:They're abandoning their new game device

Pokebank news titles should make you think how stupid sites are getting for clicks. The thirst is real.

I'd say it's a tad early for them to do that, but I suppose the earlier, the better so they can later on the years focus on a home console.while focusing on the mistakes they did.

I'm actually excited for this :) just means another new handheld is coming out :)

Considering it's been three years since the 3DS originally released, I think that's true.

Wonder if the graphics will improve? Maybe Wii U graphics?

I suppose it isn't too far fetched to believe that Nintendo has begun working on its next handheld, but it will still be years before there is any official statement on it.

Nintendo 3.5 DX Super Lite

Seriously though, even if it is a replacement/successor to the 3DS, I doubt they'd drop the 3D functionality. Too popular and doing so would be a step backward. The name probably just won't have 3D in it but still with the 3D functionality, touch screen and new features.

Seems a little too soon, but I guess we'll have to wait and see for this one.

It would be funny if like next year Nintendo released a console with better specs than both the PS4 and X1. Give something for the haters to chew on.

Lol that would be pretty hilarious! I wonder what would happen to gamers who bought a ps4 and XboxOne would they poop themselves?

But they aren't abandoning the 3DS. Consoles take a long time to develop, it's perfectly normal for them to start plans now, as the console might take years to finish. Besides the bigger a head-start they get, the more time they have to make an enjoyable console.

Actually, it's pretty normal for devs to start planning on their next gen consoles lol.

Wouldn't be suprised since that's a possibility.

Thank you.

Nintendo has an entire R&D department whose day-to-day job is hardware design. Why is this ever surprising news to anyone?
