Personally, I find it hard to believe Nintendo is creating a new handheld or a new console (to release in the near future 2014 or 2015). While creating a machine with specs in line with the PS4/Xbone makes sense, it would destroy consumers trust in Nintendo, and would ultimately be a bad move. The codename "Fusion" leads me to believe Nintendo intends to release an enhanced handheld which is capable of playing Wii U and 3ds titles, or a home console which can play 3ds and Wii U games (or both). Nintendo likely intends to compete with Sony's Vita TV, and this "Fusion" Project is their answer.

Creating a more powerful Wii U makes some sense, so that Nintendo gamers could experience 3rd party games like Kingdom Hearts 3, FFXV, The Witcher 3, etc. I think creating a new console could work, as long as the Wii U continues to get all of Nintendo's 1st party games. It might alienate fans but as long as Nintendo shows intention to support the Wii U with exclusives it might not fail horribly.

well, considering how crappy the WiiU is doing, it makes sense for the fusion terminal to be in development. But i don't know why the 3ds would need a replacement now since it's doing well for a handheld and it's got good games on it and is decently popular.

Nintendo, historically, begin developing their new handheld before the latest has even launched: the 3DS had prototypes before the DS launched, for instance. Serious development starts 3-4 years before release, so these rumours do make some sense, but the specs are nonsense as anything can (and will) change.

The sliding display and lack of 3D is interesting, though, as they seem like large deviations from the 3DS. The 2DS shows that 3D might not be an important feature for Nintendo's next handheld, so maybe the fliptop design is being put to rest as well.

They should re-release the Game Boy Color and Nintendo 64- their sales would go through the roof

Developing a console makes complete sense. But it won't be released for awhile. They started development of the Wii U the year after the wii. (at least thats what they told us). Same thing with ps4 and ps3. After ps3 had been out for a year, they began development of their next console. I also doubt they would have that much planned for it either. 3DS was the best selling console of 2013 both portable and home. It's been out for almost 3 years. DS was out for over 6 before the ads came out. With it's current success, I don't see it going anywhere anytime soon.

Now the Wii U is struggling hard. Now they could easily fix this with a quality Zelda game and/or Metroid game. BUT this doesn't seem to be happening... Who knows though.

It will be interesting nonetheless to see what Nintendo does in the near future.

Wasn't the rumoured Pokémon Plus and Minus going to be on a console called the 'Terminal'? Welp, looks like rumours are connecting to other rumours.

Yeah, I meant to say that while Nintendo is most definitely developing a new console, I find it hard to believe it will be releasing as quickly as rumours suggest (a 2015 release). The 3DS started development before the DS was released, so of course Nintendo's development team would have ideas for their next hardware releases.

Hopefully it's not... I want more Pokemon games of my 3DS :(

I heard its going to be on the handheld and the Terminal, and it would connect to each other.

The 3DS and Wii U connect to each other now, I don't see how these two systems wont.

Good.. this is what Nintendo needs (well the 3DS is fine, it`s the Wii U successor that I think is the welcomed change)

Yeah, it's one way of making Nintendo money. Make it compatible with all Wii U games, but having hardware which is analogous to the PS4+Xbone would result in a beast of a machine. Remove the Gamepad (but still have it compatible) and bundle the console with a Pro Controller. Nintendo could continue to support the Wii U with 1st party games, but put out graphically enhanced versions on their new console.

This would be a super disaster for Nintendo. The hardware is not the problem since the general consumer can give to F's on how strong the console is. The marketing is the real problem

The 3DS is selling to well for them to be releasing  a successor in the next year or two

and Nintendo has games that they are going to announce at E3 for 2015 and beyond ( Zelda U, unnamed Sonic and others). why would they be releasing a new console in the next few years when they have games in the making for the Wii U?

I am really tired of bringing up SEGA every single time somebody makes these rumors up ( not directed towards anybody on KH13) but Nintendo will end up like them if they alienate their fans by doing these if it is true ( which it most likely isn't )

Oh God I hope not.

If Nintendo turns around and releases a new system they better give me a refund for my Wii U, otherwise I'm done with them.

Exactly.. But even then..   They need new franchises.

The truth of the matter is that as soon as developers stop supporting last generation (PS3 + 360) they will also stop supporting the Wii U. I don't think it will happen but this is how I see Nintendo doing it: all of their first party exclusives are released on both platforms.

Sure, the Wii U version would be inferior, but both consoles would have equal support from Nintendo's 1st party devs. It seems like the only thing Nintendo's hardcore fans care about is exclusives, and as long as Nintendo doesn't stop releasing exclusive games then I don't think there should be any cause for concern. This way, people who only ever buy Nintendo consoles can experience games which would have only released for PS4+PC+Xbone, or they can continue playing Nintendo games on their Wii U.

Sorry but I have to disagree with most of what you are saying. The Wii U is struggling due to the lack of mass marketing that the Wii had, but to say all the third-party devs will drop support of the Wii U once the 7th gen official ends does not make sense to me. So your saying that games like COD, Assassin's Creed, Project Cars and others will just disappear  once 7th gen ends? doubt it.

You thought the whole launch of the Wii U was  confusing imagine if their was two Nintendo home consoles out in the market? yea it would be that bad, both the Wii U and this next console will sell really bad. Consumers would be confused on what is a Wii U from the other Nintendo console .it would be a giant waste of time and money for Nintendo. They should just focus on making a comeback for the Wii U ( like they did with the SNES).This rumor has SEGA written all over it.

Yes, if COD stops coming out on PS3 it would also stop releasing for Wii U. The PS3 has a massive install base, and developing for Wii U wouldn't be worth the investment if the install base is as pathetic as it is now.

If Zelda, X, Smash Bros. release and don't improve the Wii U's sales, what else could Nintendo do? Marketing another console which compliments the Wii U, but also has the strength of the PS4/Xbone's 3rd party games, would be easier than selling a console which lacks every major game except Nintendo's exclusives. I would buy a Nintendo console with the strength of the PS4, if games like KH3 and FFXV would release for it, over the PS4 and Xbone. I imagine many others would feel the same.

If they give the console an awesome name I believe it could sell well. The Wii U wouldn't be advertised as openly, so there wouldn't be massive confusion, but games would still release for it to please the core Nintendo crowd. It would be a bit confusing, I admit, but its possible for the idea to work.

What will probably happen is just that Nintendo carries on for another four years releasing awesome games. The Wii U will have no 3rd party support, and sales will still be low, but it would please core fans.

All the CODS were on the Wii ( except  for MW2), they were lacking in features but they existed on the Wii. Even If the sales are low still ( the sales are getting better but I am unsure), Activison won't pull away the support, they didn't do it with the PS3 when it was doing bad, they won't do it with the Wii U. If the Wii U does not improve after this year then Nintendo will have to deal with another bad year with the Wii U. No gaming company has made two consoles within a few years of each other but SEGA.And we all know how that turned out for SEGA. The amount of people who want to buy a brand new Nintendo console is smaller then the people who actually bought a Wii U. a new console is not worth it

Even as stubborn as Sora96 is, even he mentioned the fact that Nintendo has too much money in the bank right now. Enough money to keep supporting the Wii U. But even with all that cash they can still go bankrupt ( it will take decades though). They need to find a way to fix the Wii U ( like how Sony came back in the last gen) , and not just make a new console that is a apology for the Wii U mistakes. Don't ignore what happen in the past. This will be Nintendo's Sega Saturn if they do what this rumor is saying they will do.

The Wii U is  having barely any third-party support because of its sales,(the sales suck because their is no mass marketing). The hardware is not the problem. it has been and always will be because of the sales.

Yeah, that's what will likely happen. I just like speculating, is all :P the idea of a Nintendo console which gets every major multiplatform game just seems attractive to me. If the Wii U gets popular enough it will probably get sub-par ports/remakes of popular console games, like you said. I just hope that one day a Nintendo console will have 3rd party support so I can play everything I want on one console.

the idea does sound nice for somebody who only wants to game on one console. But to me, it just sounds like a usual doom and gloom theory/dream/fetish by people who want either

1.Nintendo to fail in the long run

2.Nintendo to go third party so they can play Mario and Zelda on other platforms

3.Nintendo to give up on the Wii U so they can boost about how the Wii U fall to Xbox One and PlayStation 4

I want all three to succeed. What happen to Atari and SEGA was tragic and people sound like it would be a amazing idea if Nintendo went 3rd party.

I want 2014 to be the year of the Wii U

They should re-release the Game Boy Color and Nintendo 64- their sales would go through the roof

^ This.

I still have a working Gameboy color: I play it more than my 3DS.

This sounds amazing but I better get some credit if I trade in my WiiU for this

  • 2 weeks later...

they are more likely considering ideas for their 9th gen console, Sony and Microsoft are more then likely doing the same too.
