I can't share this on Facebook since my host sister is friends with me, but I need to share this somewhere so why not here I had dinner with my host father's relatives today. It was 4 obaa-chans who looked like they're in their 70's so they are probably in their 90's. It was an interesting dinner. Here are my favorite quotes:
"You have such a big nose! Look at that! So pretty! What a beautiful girl."
"Could you pass the tomatoes?" (tomato is pronounced the same in Japanese)
"Sure."
"Wow! She understood me!"
*talking with my host mother about our plans tomorrow*
*look over to see them looking at me*
"I'm sorry, what did you say?"
"Oh, she didn't understand (laugh)"
Only in Japan can I be so politely insulted. Joking aside, I did enjoy listening to the stories they told. It's funny because my host mother and her in-laws don't have the greatest relationship. In America that would come out with snappy remarks and such, but in this case I felt the tension by how overly polite everyone was. It's like they know they don't like each other so they put the extra work in to avoid any conflicts.
Well, that was my dinner. I'll miss Japan when I leave but I won't miss being told I have a big nose all the time.
