Doctor Who is a British sci-fi television program that revolves around the adventures through time and space of an alien called the Doctor in his machine disguised as a blue police telephone box called the TARDIS (which stands for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space). Then along the way he also picks up companions (only the best though) to travel with him.

Though the Doctor looks human he is actually a Time Lord from the ancient planet Gallifrey (so he doesn't look human, you look Time Lord --they came first). The Time Lords are, obviously, lords of time. They have the technology to travel through all of time and space and can seemingly live on forever. They have superb mental powers, such as having telepathy and possibly even clairvoyant. They also have a little trick to cheat death called regeneration.

Regeneration is when a Time Lord completely reboots their body when they're dying to gain a new face and personality while maintaining their memories. However if a Time Lord is killed before their regeneration is complete, they are as good as dead. Within a certain time limit (I believe it's 10 hours but I'm not too sure I'll have to recheck) after regeneration Time Lords are able to heal themselves of injuries (even regrow severed limbs). As cool of a parlor trick regeneration may be, a Time Lord can only regenerate 12 times before they die.

So far, the Doctor is on his 11th regeneration, having regenerated 10 times. The current Doctor is played by Matt Smith, and his three companions, Amy, Rory, and River, are played by Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, and Alex Kingston respectively.

Doctor Who is the longest running sci-fi show, having over 32 seasons and overall over 700 (almost 800 last I calculated) episodes and a movie that aired in 1996. The show originally aired in 1963 which ran until 1989. The show was then rebooted in 2005 and continues to run today. It is also the most successful sci-fi series of all time.

This thread is to discuss Doctor Who; what you love about it, your favorite Doctor, favorite companion, songs you like, moments you like, and possibly even spoilers as the 7th season approaches within the next few weeks.

I will try my best to update this thread with news as it comes out. If you see something that I don't then feel free to post it as well!

As with Tennant before him, I shall miss Matt Smith as the Doctor. He was an excellent Doctor and I wish him luck in his next role.

And who ever they get to be the next Doctor is gonna have some big shoes to fill.

Great Doctor, my Doctor will always be David Tennant as I grew up with him but the ride with Matt Smith was great. Hopefully they pick a good actor for number twelve. 

Let's all guess who the next doc will be. Hugh Laurie or Rowan Atkinson is my guess. Or quite possibly David Morrissey since he was one of the future doctors in that one Christmas episode

Wow,  i mean... It feels like yesterday David Tennant regenerated into Matt. Well, its been an honour my boy.

Even though the entire fandom is like this when a new doctor is about to come, I think everyone will get more pissed since it's his final regeneration. That would mean, that whoever it is, many people would like the show cancel and complain to death and go through the guy's/girl's/dinosaur's/toaster's past to find out what bad thing he/she/it to hate the person/animal/thing more.

Yeah but in the Name of the Doctor it showed that John Hurt's Doctor is an incarnation but he isn't the doctor. (Also he is the true Christopher Eccleston doctor" 

Meaning Matt Smith is the 11th Doctor but the 12 Incarnation.

I am quite sad about Matt's departure. I got into Doctor Who right after 10 had regenerated into 11 which got me to watch all of the nuwho episodes along with some classics. It is now one of my top 5 shows and I'm quite sad the first Doctor I had seen when the actual episodes aired is leaving. I have faith that who ever Moffat chooses to replace Matt will be brillant and I wish nothing but the best for Mr. Smith, my first Doctor.

We know that Time Lords can regenerate into a body of the opposite gender, like when he was talking about the time lord who had the same tatoo in every regeneration in that season 6 episode, or when Eccleston said "anything can happen", so that would be interesting. And I'm not sure if the next doctor should be ginger, or if they should keep it from him for a bit longer.

I'm not really sad about Matt leaving yet, but I quess I'll be when he actually does.. At least that happened with the other two doctors who i've seen to regenerate. I first was just exited to see the new one but then started to miss the previous.
