Hironobu Sakaguchi hates Final Fantasy sequels

Featured Replies

The After Years and Crisis Core were good, but the other sequels haven't even seemed like anything special from what I've seen of them. X-2 plain sucked from what I played, too. :/ I don't blame him.

In other words,Sakaguchi hates X-2,the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy and The After Years

And y'know what?I don't blame him at all

And for X-2 he was the executive producer. Bahahaha.

And again, he says he hates sequels and yet what was FF2? Oh a sequel to FF1 that reused a shit ton of assets.

Crisis Core is a prequel buddy so it's a different case.I love the After Years too but I honestly can't blame him for hating sequels when abominations like X-2 and Lightning Returns exist

1He was barely involved with X-2 and his involvement was so little

2No FF2 wasn't a sequel to FF1 as it doesn't continue the story of FF1 and it adds it's own mechanics

reusing assets doesn't make it a sequel either cuz FF5 reused a lot of FF4's assets

I know, but it sounds like he just doesn't like using the same universe and characters for multiple games. That's why I brought Crisis Core into it.

I really appreciate that mindset. Video games are a medium much too saturated with sequels and spin-offs, so I always like when people in the industry are against the whole franchise mindset.

Same involvement as VIII and X.

I like how you read "I don't like sequels" and "I made Final Fantasy" as "I hate sequels to Final Fantasy"

He's conceptually against making direct sequels to games, you're just twisting that

Well I guess that explains why I find The Last Story's ending so satisfying then.

Personally, I like sequels even if its more of the same,as long as they bring something new to the table I'm all for it,I love Mega Man 2,Donkey Kong Country 2,Majora's Mask,Rayman Legends, but, when a story-driven game that ended with a satisfying ending gets a sequel because...money then I agree with him.

he never refers to any FF sequel, that is hardly concrete

it's not a damnation, he's explaining why each FF game is its own universe.

Gotta love the trollbait article titles people posted about that.

He's not saying he hates any specific Final Fantasy game or sequel. He's saying he hates the concept of sequels, in general, and that Final Fantasy games (in his opinion) should be standalone.

Ummm I didn't mean for the title of the thread to be clickbait that's how it was in the link

Links are clickbait though. Article writers often take something out of context and use it for the title.

I personally don't see anything wrong with sequels. The problem isn't the fact that there are sequels. It's not even really a problem with sequels that weren't originally intended. It's making the sequels without the same care that was made in the originals and without having intelligent reasons for the sequels. When it becomes a cash grab to just re-use assets or because the first game was super popular and therefore making a sequel, then that's when we get bad sequels. They just need the proper heart and soul to go into them and can't be done for superfluous reasons.

At this point, I don't think the Final Fantasy sequels will stop. I mean, for those who are following Final Fantasy XV can see just how huge the world is going to be. It would be a waste to NOT reuse the assets from it and make sequels out of it, especially with how many years in development it's been in.. As long as it's done well and they make sense, sequels don't bother me.

Couldn't agree more with him. I hope VIII never gets a sequel for this same reason.

Of course he isn't. Not really smart to hate on something a former colleague of his made.
