Though I doubt this will change any minds, might as well put my two cents in.

 

In general, I don't find Lightning to be that compelling of a character. I get the whole "she cares but has a hard time showing it" tends to be a thing in a lot of JRPGs and anime, but it honestly doesn't leave a lot of room for development. The most they do with her is just take something she already is and make it more overt, rather than having her actually get an arc (for instance, not caring at all, and then realizing the importance of humanity). I have not played XIII-2 or 3, but from what I've seen, it doesn't really look like the character gets that arc, and is mostly just operating under the assumption that you're already 100% on board with her, so that they feel more like an appendix of worship than a story (The ending of XIII-3 essentially confirms this). 

 

Not to mention chewing out Sazh for bringing up the topic of potentially killing Serah should she turn Cie'th, saying that "people like him are the problem," and then doing an about face by being fully on board with nuking Cocoon as a potential solution for their problems kind of lost me.

That arc you mentioned about not caring at all is actually emphasized in VII and VIII.

Because people hate Lightning & Toriyama for stupid reasons.

Haha. You should know he didn't write the sequels. Lazy? That's how he put out XIII-2 in 18 months, a game you quite like I might add. Bahahha. Please, it seems Nomura likes her just as much. Called her perfect when promoting her modelling and now Lightning herself is teasing she'll be in VII Remake. He also said she's one of his 3 fav heroines. Very high chance she'll appear in KH3 as well. I should also add Visual Works still has a massive Lightning poster up.

Nope, VIII was Kitase. He got promoted by Kitase for FFX.

 

VII was Kitase, IX was Ito.

How is it an opinion when Square Enix is very happy with him? His games keep selling and he's on the FF Committee and in BD1 for a reason.
