semi rant: What's wrong with button mashing?

Posted

seriously, what is WRONG with it? I KNOW people have opinions, but still... I honestly love games that let me button mash, like tales of xillia 1/2, the kingdom hearts games, etc. Sometimes it feels like it's a crime to like button mashing. I like button mashing because it feels like I'm doing something and it feels like i'm absolutely free, unlike Tales of Graces f and Tales of Zestiria gameplay wise. I like them storywise, but not gameplay wise. I just get more into the game when the gameplay's like that. Any game that tries to restrict me, I probably wouldn't like.

There's nothing with button mashing expect RPGS and Kingdom Hearts. Those certain games you can't button mash.

you kinda can button mash through the kh numbered titles though.

I know what you mean. There's nothing wrong with the button mashing, could be a good stress relief.

Button smashing = bad gameplay. It means that you don't have to build a strategy, you just blindly spam X all the time.

Ttl;dr Button Smashing = Bad gameplay = Bad Game = No one will buy it.  :P

I disagree with you. Not EVERY game has to be very strict like Tales of Graces f and Zestiria to be fun and JUST because there is button smashing in the game, DOESN'T mean that it has bad gameplay xP Again, there is NOTHING wrong with button mashing. Some people like it, others don't.

I would say there's a difference between button SPAMMING and button MASHING. Mashing implies that you're all over the place hitting every button possible, and have no idea what you're actually playing. In skill-based games, this can be frustrating, since if you lose to it, it wasn't by another player's superior ability, but basically just dumb luck. Conversely, if you succeed, it wasn't very earned.

Button spamming, on the other hand, evokes a repetitive structure of controls that require hitting the same button over and over to achieve desired results. KH is very much a button spamming game; not to say there isn't any skill to playing (there definitely is!) but your playstyle involves less input and more reaction, since you can just keep hitting certain buttons. It wouldn't be a button mashing game, since the controls are not designed to accept those kinds of random configurations.

In the tl;dr version, yeah, button mashing is bad. Button spamming is okay-ish, but only if you actually display any proficiency at it.

Sometimes button mashing games are fun like those mini games in Pokemon stadium. Good times, good times!

I see your point. In most of the Kingdom Hearts games somtimes you have to button spam the x(KH2)  sqaure(BBS), and triangle buttons(KH2) to win a battle

Nothing really, but, as Cynical has put it, you'll mash my potatoes at the rate you mash those buttons (ha ha, bad pun).

The problem with button mashing in games is that it can get boring after a while if all you have to do is spamming 1 or 2 buttons to win and there's not much else going on.

The Kingdom Hearts games can get a bit button mashy especially KH2,but I wouldn't compare KH2 to Tales of Xillia, there's a lot more going on in KH2 to make the battles interesting.

If we're talking about the Tales series specifically, the problem with Xillia being a bit button mashy is that it feels like a step backward compare to Graces that had a bit more going on in battles.

But of course sometimes its fun to just relax and play a button mashy action game,Hyrule Warriors,Bayonetta,God of War are all great games.

This is honestly opinionated. To me, I felt like graces went a step backwards and xillia a step forward because of the gameplay. That's just me. Never liked the restrictive gameplay of tales of graces f.

Really depends on the game. Certain games, like the Mario Party series will require button mashing at some points. Other games, like Xenoblade Chronicles, it's practically impossible to button mash, because of the combat system. In a sense, button mashing can be bad, it just depends on how it's implemented. For the Mario Party series, it's good because it's not everywhere and in the particular case where it is implemented, it is a necessity. In a game like Injustice: Gods Among Us however, it's absolutely horrible and gets easily spammed. The lack of recovery and defence in that game is somewhat irritating.
