How do SE characters get in KH?

Posted

I just had this thought and wondered how this part worked.Though Square makes the KH games, Disney owns the series, and therefore make the final calls. If Disney REALLY wanted something to be in the game, for example Frozen, then Square/Nomura would just have to make it work somehow. But Disney can't force Square to put in Cloud or Lightning, since they do not own them. BUT, if Square wanted to put Cloud or Lightning in the game, then they would still need Disney to approve their inclusion, outfits, and of course any potential interactions they would have with Disney owned characters, correct?

At this stage of their relationship, I doubt there would be any problems involving this, but I just didn't know.Is my line of thinking correct, or am I missing something?

I'm pretty sure Disney only needs to approve the inclusion of Disney characters, the dev team pretty much makes all the decisions. Of course Disney is shown what gets added and according to Nomura they critique it but don't force anything on the team.

If I remember he said at one point they did ask for a lighter ending to KH2 but didn't force it.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks!I didn't know the thing about the KH2 ending!I knew Disney had Nomura completely change the KH3D ending, but it's all very interesting!

They tend to give Nomura a lot of creative freedom when it comes to characters being included from Square, who gets in just depends on Nomura's desire at the moment and whether or not he and the team believes it would actually fit in. Disney just tends to be the one they have to confirm with on things that are largely on the Disney side of things. At most they would probably just have to ask "Soooooo is it ok if I put one of my OTHER characters into-" "Knock yourselves out." "SW-EEET!"

Nomura has a lot of freedom, but of course with some things, he has to get permission to use.

It's co-owned. Disney lends properties and calls it a day. Square does 98% of all the real work.

I think Disney is pretty lenient when it comes to that.

However if I remember correctly Rikku's outfit in KH2 had to be modified bc it was thought to be too revealing. I don't remember if that was Disney saying that specifically or in general.

You're right that Square does the vast majority of the work (probably everything but marketing), but I'm pretty sure they don't co-own them. Every KH game has:Developed by Square Enix, Copyright to DisneyWhich means Disney owns EVERYTHING not originally from Square alone. Nomura made it pretty clear in the past that Sora and company are Disney characters.

Not Sora. All KH original characters belong to Square.

Disney owns Kingdom Hearts, including all original characters and worlds. That means Sora belongs to Disney too.

I believe Disney needs to approve the way the Disney characters are represented in the games, but they don't have much more input than that for other non-disney chars in the game, they just happen to have a great deal (for them) where they own all rights to original KH characters made without actually having to make them, program them, design them etc.  Ah the beauty of the deals game devs make to try and get their work out into the world.

Like others have said, Disney owns the name Kingdom Hearts, and all characters created for it (like Sora, Axel, etc.). Because Disney owns KH, that's why Disney could make that awful cell phone game without Square's involvement or permission.

Nomura even said in the Ultimania for KH1 that Sora, Riku, and Kairi are treated like the Disney characters. (Source: KHinsider)

The exact quote is near the bottom.

Now I'm not entirely sure, but I believe that, the way the contracts are set up, if Disney is going to have a drawn Sora for any kind of advertising or merchandising, they have to give Nomura first chance to do it. If Nomura doesn't want to, then Disney is allowed to find someone else to draw Sora.

They co-own the series, just like Sora. Nomura designs Sora. I've never seen any proof that only Disney owns him. And you know why that cell-phone game wasn't as good? Because Square wasn't there. Disney + making games without Square = no.

He's just a VP. Sorry, but I'm not convinced till I hear it from the big boys.

I'm curious to know what higher rank you need than a Vice President, given that he more than meets the qualification of "the big boys."

If that's not enough proof for you, then I can't help you  :/

I think you missed the point of mentioning the crappy cell phone game. In my OP, I NEVER said it was good. I meant that Disney owns KH, so they could do it without Square, but can NEVER make a KH game without Disney's okay.

Everything KH official says copyright to Disney (which means they own it), and DEVELOPED by Square.

The president of the company. Not the VP of Disney infinity which is only a game.. He's not a "big boy"

The Disney section just says Tarzan and the Square section just says Final Fantasy. Which means KH exclusive characters are co-owned.

There is a line dividing the Disney C and the Tarzan stuff, just like there is a line between the Tarzan stuff and the FF characters. Using your logic, Everything below Disney is owned by them. These are the facts man.

Sorry, not convinced. It says nothing about KH original characters being solely owned by Disney.

"A lot of people are confused about who exactly owns Kingdom Hearts, but it's Disney - it's developed in partnership with Square-Enix." - John Vignocchi Vice President, Production at Disney Interactive Studios

Disney Interactive Studios even shows on the game's intro and credits. How do you think Disney develop KH content without Square Enix's permission? Lol. Nomura's even admitted they can't do things they do for all Square Enix IPs due to Disney.

In regards to Square Enix owned characters like Final Fantasy it'll be up to the director or producer of that game. Eg. if you want Lightning in KH3 you'll need permission from Toriyama or Kitase.
