I feel like this is one point that I will never understand why people defend

I was expecting Riku to go at Xehanort and be like "firetruck you for everything you have done to me and my friends"

So the only immediate reason Sora has to defeat Xehanort is "need to boink old man with giant key so he doesn't do something"

Defend whatever else you want about the game, Xehanorts motivations isn't one of them
