The SpongeBob spinoffs in development would focus on core characters from the show and could be turned into series, specials or feature films. Nickelodeon is also planning a yearlong celebration in honor of the show's 20th anniversary (it premiered in April 1999), including an hourlong "Birthday Blowout" special in July and other events leading up to the theatrical release It's a Wonderful Sponge in May 2020.
