It explained how exactly Maleficent came back. That it wasn’t just the fairies remembering her but also darkness. Implying darkness was around during KH2.

And it’s hopefully gonna explain where Lauriam and Erlena end up.

Technically the way darkness told Maleficent how to do it doesn't need them to be around during KH2 at all.

You misunderstood, Darkness need Maleficent in the future to act as a waypoint for someone(s) from the ux era
