Who feels like some mental exercise?

Posted

Looking for something to think about on a long bus ride? Want to exercise your brain? Want to further understand what exactly it is that plagues Roxas so? Let's talk some metaphysics.

Your first question: Are the mind and body a single thing, inherently connected and impossible to seperate (monoism), or are the mind and body seperate from one another (dualism)?

Remember: no right or wrong answers. It's all mental exercise.

wat.

Well, if your mind and body are the same, why can you free think while your body reacts automatically to certain stimulants? Or is a certain part of your brain used for automatic reactions with your body and brain, and the other part is free will of controlling your mind and body?

Can I ask you a question first? Why are you trying to kill me?

That's tricky....

Well, i think that while we "live" our mind and body cannot be separated, and we are one. When we "die" then perhaps our mind can live in another plaine of existence, that could be something related to religion, like haven or hell, or perhaps not, maybe even another life. But that's a question that really has no answer, we'd need to understand what happens to the mind when we die, something no one can answer (at least for now o.O)

And the "live" is for a question I'll throw to you: Do you think that this world we live is a reality, or maybe we exist in dream? If so, what arguments do you have to sustain your idea? (metaphysics)

People that have a religion go for Dualism.

I go for Monoism.

Hmmm...

Well without one or the other we would probably die. We need both our mind and body to continue functioning successfully. I don't know if I can truly answer that question since I don't have enough knowledge on the subject. However, it seems to me that the mind and body two seperate things that work together alot. So maybe a bit of both but I honestly am just making an educated guess.

Your posts are always filled with wisdom. It's amazing. owo

I believe that it is monoism. One cannot function without the other.

I'd feel that the mind is separate from the body. Put it this way, if your brain dies, but your heart is still beating you are considered dead. If your brain is alive but the rest of your body is dead then you are still alive in a sense.

Think of the brain as a computer, everything else in the body is just to support the main computer. The stomach being the power supply, eyes being the monitor, ears being the microphone, mouth being the speakers and so on. If the actual computer itself is disconnected, everything else stops working and becomes useless. The computer can easily be reconnected with these things or a completely new set. The main difference is between a brain and a computer is that the brain requires a constant supply of oxygen or it's done for, where as a computer can be unplugged for years.

The only reason why Brain transplants aren't available is because of the extreme difficulty of the procedure. There is no known way to do it as of now and it's probably extremely unethical, unless your a Nazi or something.

Without getting into pure religious speculation, I go for Dualism. In my opinion, anything that is sentient is alive. Until you are no longer sentient and just a lump of meat then you are still alive. With that said, that doesn't mean things that aren't sentient like plants aren't alive, but I'd consider HAL 9000 alive.

People that have a religion go for Dualism.

I don't like religion and I say dualism owo

Mind and body are not the same thing. based on the factors of what makes up the two units, the Mind and body, the mind can control more than just one's own body. Of course this is if is hooked up properly. There are more factors to think about besides just the mind and body. Subsequently there are the Heart, spirit and soul. Some believe there is nothing special to individualism with the heart, much like a placebo, although it brings me to the spirit and the soul. Dave's question is similar to the this; is the spirit and soul the same thing? I believe that answer is the same as to Dave's question: They are not the same thing.

Thisthisthisthisthis. Every single thing in this post. Including that bit about dream/reality.

To all the people that are saying the mind is separate from the body, especially Amon with his computer example, I'd like to just mention that the body will effect the mind, for instance if you touch something hot, and move your hand away, you move your hand before your brain sends the message to do so. Your arm does that automatically (unless you intentionally placed it on a hot surface). So your arm thought for you but, and here's the weird part, your mind stores the information as such

Send message to put hand on X-Put hand on X-Received information X is hot-Send message to remove hand from X-removed hand from X

when what happened was

Send message to put hand on X-Put hand on X-Received information X is hot-removed hand from X-Send message to remove hand from X

They're separate from eachother far as I'm aware (from what I remember from last years Biology exam)

Like, I don't think and send a signal down to my heart to keep beating every second . It automatically does it, much like a knee jerk reaction. (unlike the way, if I want to move my hands, I have to will it and my brain will send the signals, they don't just spasm all over the place of their own accord - There's a word for this which I can't recall, I'll see if I can find it later)

Simple. Nothing is true, everything is permitted.

IDK. I did a ear test on YouTube yesterday to see how good my hearing was and failed miserably. T_T + I'm not very smart.
