Really, how do these games sell so much despite the fact that they are the same game with more guns and explosions? I don't hate either of them, it's just a mystery as to how they are so popular when there are plenty of other games out there that are a lot more innovative and creative and end up getting overlooked by a lot of casual gamers.

 

Anyways, what are you're thoughts on this?

I never really cared for cod or halo. They just looked repetitive to me. 

I guess other people just happen to like it. Good for them.

I ask that myself. People just like violence these days I guess, and care more about graphics than a decent plot.

All my friends like them, I'm cool with it, but I guess these games are not my priotiry in gaming

Never actually played CoD or halo, but what i do know about FPS like these are: people like throwing grenades and shooting at others over and over again. It's like mashing the A button and hitting a wall over and over again Get it?

I don't understand it either. But you NEED to play fps to be a "hardcore gamer"

You made my day. I only play it at my friends house house and when i do its only to piss off everyone on my team. They get so worked its funny as all hell

I'm a Halo fan, who's never played any of the games, and while I'll admit it wasn't the most original story it was told in a brilliant way, and Halo 4 actually has the most original story out of all the games. As for CoD you've got me there.

Well, I happen to be a fan of Halo and I have to tell you the story in Halo games are actually prety good. Unlike CoD, Halo always has a good story&plot to go along weith its good gameplay. It is certainly better than CoD which puts no effort into making a good story whatsoever and just recycles the same gameplay over and over. Most people like to buy FPS because of the fact that they include zombies, aliens, and online multiplayer campaigns. That's why Halo and CoD are so popular.

I do happen to like Halo actually, Halo 3 was a good game. But the gameplay itself has always been the same thing, with more weapons tacked on as it continues to grow. Still far better than COD though...

Halo would be less popular, but COD would get destroyed because it's a generic military game

And only games with guns are hardcore

People like doing things they cant do in real life without getting caught.

Well, I don't know about COD, but I have played the first Halo, and it is a legitimately good game.

I can't see why people like this games of war... What good is it to kill people? To shot them? When there is a lot of happy games with awesome storylines and great characters, they just want to kill people. I don't know how that's fun.

People find them fun, You could say the same about Assassin's Creed, Need for Speed, Mario games, sports games, Mega man, Uncharted, Pokemon even kh if you wanted to like most games with sequels. All have a new story/setting and couple new features to the gameplay but it's still mechanical same game that  people enjoy. I don't play either Halo or Cod.

 

 

The games that are pushing being innovative and creative are 85% of the time are indie titles or download titles like Journey, and Unfinished Swan and Sound Shapes.

I've been a Halo fan for over 10 years now and what drew me in initially was the campaign. Halo actually has quite an in depth narrative and back story. But i'm also a fan of the multiplayer. Yes they all involve guns and explosions but each installment of the franchise has something new to offer. From Halo 2's hijacking vehicles mechanic to Halo 3's theatre and forge modes. What I hate are the people who take the competitive nature far too seriously. Halo 4 still shows the franchise still has creative roots and I'm intrigued to see where the story goes next.

 

As for Call of Duty I really can't say. Why did the game only really become popular by the time it's 4th game came out or why they seem to churn a new game out every single year and people keep buying it! Are they seriously bored with the last game after only one year? Have they ever really done anything that innovative?

 

Bottom line I find Halo to be creative and a whole lot of fun to play!

The same thing could be said for any series, really. If the gameplay is good then making more than incremental changes runs to big of risk of alienating their audience. God of War, for instance, has had the same control scheme for all of its games because it was pretty much nailed the first time around.

 

I feel like I should defend Halo a bit here. Halo is hardly an annualized release in the sense of Call of Duty, and makes a much more concerted effort to add something new each time. Halo 4 was praised because of the risks taken with both the plot and new additions while preserving the familiar feel of the series.

 

As to why a game like Call of Duty appeals to the masses, think of it like the game equivalent of a popcorn flick. It's appealing on a base level to a lot of people, and doesn't feel a need to be anything more than that so long as it remains successful. 

I honestly don't know, I guess all I can say is that they're entertaining for war fans, fps players, or just play them cause they're interesting games to them and they like them a lot Different people like different things my friend . I mainly like COD for it's interesting story lines, and to kill some noobs

Here's what I say as a Cod player.

 

People play Cod because they like to be competitive, it's not just because it's violent. The game promotes competition.

Players simply love competition esp. when they play halo or Cod.

I've never played Halo, and I've only played a CoD game once at an uncles house, and frankly, I don't really care about either franchise. And to be honest with you, I think that the CoD franchise will fade away in the near future. This is because they constantly release new games, and from what I've heard, there all pretty similar to each other. Sooner or later, people will get sick of constantly paying for virtually the same game over and over again, and it will fade away. The same thing happened to Guitar Hero.

The reason why many people turn in to these FPS games are because both of the games are really easy to approach. They have easy campaigns that teach players the basics and offers lot of explosions and cool looking scripted events for few hours. Multiplayer has very low skill ceiling and anyone can just jump in and do fairly good at it. Both games reward you constantly for  playing them. Both games are really easy and you can play them with no strategy what so ever. 

 

Honestly I have grown bored of both series long time ago. Why? Simply because neither of series really don't have anything interesting to offer me. Also I mainly enjoy playing more team based, competitive and more harder FPS games than these casual shooters (also gaming communities of CoD and Halo are pretty horrible). (and no I'm not battlefield fan)

I find master chief to be the most uninteresting protagonist in all modern gaming.
