Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth has argued against the
"drama" surrounding the concept of games consoles requiring an always-on
Internet connection.

Speaking on his personal Twitter account
(now private), Orth argued "sorry, I don't get the drama around having
an 'always on' console. Every device now is 'always on'. That's the
world we live in. #dealwithit".

Orth joined Microsoft in 2012 as a creative director on a currently
unannounced project. He's previously worked on God of War 3, Star Wars:
The Force Unleashed II, and on the Medal of Honor series at EA.

"Did you learn nothing from Diablo III or SimCity? You know some
people's Internet goes out right? Deal with it is a sh***y reason,"
replied BioWare gameplay designer Manveer Heir.

"Electricity goes out too," said Orth in response.

"The mobile reception in the area I live in is spotty and unreliable. I will not buy a mobile phone," Orth said as a joke.

While Orth later apologised for his comments, the debate arrives off the back of another prominent report that says Microsoft's next-gen Xbox will require a permanent connection to the Internet to load games, and that all games will be suspended if the console stays offline for more than three minutes.

"Unless something has changed recently, Durango consumer units must have
an active Internet connection to be used," said the source about the
next Xbox.

During the announcement of the PlayStation 4, Sony were quick to assert that their next PlayStation would not feature an always-online requirement.

Both Sony and Microsoft have explored ways to use a connected Internet connection to block pre-owned games in the past.

So the rumors may be true. What do you guys think? Would you buy this console if you couldn't play your games unless it was connected to the internet? Seems like if they do do this you wont be able to play used games after all. I hope they do. I want it to screw them over. Out with Microsoft so Sega can take it's place!

Honestly always online isn't that bad, but forcing people to have it to even play the games is. And then you got this little.... person who's giving people a hassle for things they can't even control. What a dick.

I don't mind if things have an always-online connection...but if you need that connection to play games...then there's something wrong. If the next Xbox comes out like that, I probably won't be buying it.

Wow... this guy sounds like a complete dick. The issue with an "always online" console is the fact that not everyone has a reliable internet connection. If the console just has "Online" as a DEFAULT SETTING that can be turned of when needed, that's fine. But Microsoft: unless you give us free 4G or something with the next Xbox, don't assume that everyone CAN be online all the time. 

 

Oh well. I never planned to buy the next Xbox anyway.

Always online/mostly online xbox 360 and 720 compared to allowing to choose weather to go online offline ps3/ps4 microsoft is just stupid like that and were always jealous of sony for almost anything really, like really look at past facts the first xbox was crap compared to ps2 then 360 came out had alot of problems didnt do to well sony comes out with ps3 and did alot better then 360 (little to no help with the 1 year gap of release dates) and with given info of the ps4 and xbox 720 or whatever they're calling what will make microsoft better then sony this year the playstation will obviously be better then the xbox no matter what they put in or take out with each new system, besides im a user of the 360 and the ps3 too me playstation has always and will always do better then xbox no matter what they each do plus one playstation (and nintendo) will always have that xbox will never have is the kingdom hearts seriesed games

Microsoft Fail!!

First of all and unrelated to the views he's espousing, this man is an obtuse ass, intentionally being belligerent towards people who have valid arguments and marginalizing people for where they live. For this reason alone I'm balking at the concept of getting the next Xbox, simply because I don't like how this man is representing the company. I know he's a single voice among many who work at Microsoft, so we'll see. Anyway...

 

Orthy, Microsoft, and certain other companies seem to have forgotten the difference between a utility and a service. A utility is something that is outfitted to some degree in every home that make for the essentials of living, like electricity, water, etc. A service is something that you pay extra so you can have it, such as cable, phone, and more recently, internet. Internet is NOT A UTILITY. There is no "internet company" that has a low-bandwidth-standard-flat-rate internet in every house, right? So, Microsoft, when you build a product dependent on a service you are instantly alienating the people who don't also purchase that service. Their costs go up to use what you are selling. If the service you are demanding they have isn't available, then they have no incentive to buy your product.

 

What if Comcast made a DVD player that would only play movies if it were connected to cable? Nobody would buy that DVD player! Ever! Cause no matter where you go, you had better be connected to cable, otherwise it's worthless. THAT's the problem with "always connected" hardware. The ONLY thing it does is limits a consumers usage. It doesn't enhance the experience. It doesn't add value to the product. It makes the consumer dependent on a service.

Anything that requires an internet connection when it shouldn't is something I would never buy. 

 

I don't care who made it or how amazing it is. If I need an internet connection to play a singleplayer game then I'm not buying it. 

 

Basically, the gaming industries are trying to test how stupid we are and sadly they have every reason to believe we will be stupid enough to buy into this. 

 

Also, I'm posting in a stealth playstation fanboy thread.
