List your favorite and least favorite final boss sets!

Posted

By "final boss set", I mean, the whole collection of bosses you fight in the final battles game, not just the very last boss itself.

Like for example: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days's final boss set was Xion1 -> Xion2 -> Xion3 -> Final Xion -> Riku.

So, list your all-time favorite and least-favorite final boss sets in any video game you've ever played! (not just KH, hence why this is in the Video Game forum)

My favorite final boss sets:

  • Final Fantasy XIII-2. The entire set of final bosses was great, with awesome music for all the fights. Especially the final fight... my gosh, I loved that fight. It's just so climactic. Let's not talk about the ending after that though...
  • Kingdom Hearts II- With the exception of the part where you have to blow up the parts of Xemmy's ship, every part of that battle was great, with awesome music. I could forgive the mash-triangle-to-win parts, because it was just that awesome. And again, the final battle music was just eerily calm and awesome.
  • Portal 2- "SPACE SPACE WANNA GO TO SPACE SPACE YES PLEASE SPACE" 'nuff said.

Now for my least favorite:

  • BioShock Infinite (and no, this has no ending storyline spoilers)- Don't get me wrong, I loved almost the entire game, and could talk for hours about how great it is. That is... except for the final battle. That final battle is, hands down, the absolute WORST final battle I've played this year, if not ever. Literally everyone and their mother wants to destroy the core of the ship, there's a new gameplay device that's thrown in that feels gimmicky and rather pointless, and it just isn't fun. But, at least the ending wiped that bad taste out of my mouth within minutes, because of how amazing it is. So there's that!
  • The Incredibles video game- The Incredibles video game was one of the ones I loved playing as a child, but never beat. So recently, I decided to play the game again. And the majority of it is a really fun, but the final boss just throws the entire enjoyable content out the window, and forces you to start over with the entire battle if you screw up, even at the very end. I hated it.

FFX - You fight all of your summons. That alone makes it awesome not to mention you get to fight Jecht's Aeon which is badass

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle - You have to fight a giant lizard twice and you get to be both Super Sonic and Shadow

Least Favorite:

Super Mario Sunshine - This fight was really easy for me and I really expected more from my favorite Mario game. I mean... seriously... you fight him when he's in a bathtub. Also, this is the only time Bowser is in the entire game. Bowser Jr. was the main enemy before this but Bowser shows up for some reason

Most Favorite: Birth by Sleep: Particularly the end of everyone's stories. It's a big final battle that's been played up for 5 years, and everybody has their own opponent to fight. Terra has Xehanort, Ventus has Vanitas, and Aqua has Braig. Then everything changes and their final battles become existential conflicts that seem to act as metaphors of internal conflict. You have Aqua fighting a Vanitas-possessed Ven, while Ven is within himself battling Vanitas for control, all the while the last of Terra's will is within his armor fighting against his Xehanort-possessed body. And then, as if it wasn't enough, Aqua comes face to face with her other possessed friend, Terra, fighting him while at the same time trying to reach out to him from within Xehanort's control. AND THEN, Aqua has to face the trials of the Realm of Darkness and has to face one of the darkest and most unique Heartless we have ever seen in the series!! It's almost as if it never ends!! And I loved every second of it, especially Ven's final battle against Vanitas, that just gives me goosebumps! Otherwise, every other Kingdom Hearts game has my favorite Final Boss sequence. Kingdom Hearts I, Re: Chain of Memories, and II used the traditional route, both 358/2 Days and Re: Coded introduced an interesting Final Boss sequence...followed by an extra stage with the True Final Boss, and then Dream Drop Distance basically followed Birth by Sleep's example, giving Sora and Riku their own separate bosses, with Riku getting the remaining amount (seriously, it's like this game was more about Riku than anything else, but I'm OK with that!). I hope they get really super-special-over-the-freaking-top creative when it comes to Kingdom Hearts III's Final Boss sequence!

Least Favorite: Probably any Sonic game that doesn't feature a final battle as Super Sonic: Seriously, I swear we've already had the formula set in stone. Having Super Sonic playable as an unlockable is one thing that at least in recent years that they have gotten back into the habit of doing, but lately I've been noticing that Sonic's not facing the final boss as Super Sonic anymore. I mean, this isn't always the case. Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations both featured Super Sonic battles. But Sonic Colors was the first modern Sonic game to skip the formula entirely and not have Super Sonic available in any boss fight whatsoever, not even the Final Boss! Sure, you could unlock him for free play for once, since they haven't done that since the Genesis games, but it's almost as if they felt like they had to chose one standard over the other (Genesis standard vs. Dreamcast standard). At least Generations did the smart thing and featured BOTH. The only problem was that Classic Super Sonic seemed to move slower, while Modern Super Sonic just consumed WAY too many rings whenever you did the Boost/Fly ability. I get that you need to give balance to such a game-breaking mechanic as flying, but if you're going to nerf the boost, at least give us the favor of putting MORE RINGS in the stage whenever you go Super Sonic! But anyway, my main point is that lately I'm starting to see less scripted Super Sonic battles, and while that may not be a problem to some people, it is to me. I love being able to play as Super Sonic during regular gameplay again, but I would really love to see Super Sonic bring us through the big finale again (and hopefully in a more creative way then Generations did). I have been keeping myself from being too spoiled for Sonic Lost World, but I have heard that Super Sonic is supposed to be playable again, so hopefully that means both playing as him through regular stages and as a Super Sonic Final Boss!

Orphan from Final Fantasy XIII:Seriously it's the easiest Final boss I've ever battled.Barthandelus himself was hard but Orphan in both of it's forms it's a total joke....especially the second form that CAN ATTACK ITSELF....I swear it killed itself because Orphan has two sides, one that heals you for some odd reason which results in the boss hurting himself and knocking itself out....As for the last form.Stagger it and pumle his face with Snow and you'll win in a minute

lol Orphan. I didn't like him/her/it/hir either. Mainly because he could insta-game-over me by using instant death on my party leader. That's just not good boss design right there. Or, I guess it's more a fault of the overall game design, not just the boss itself O_o

That insta-kill move can be survived easily with stat buffs and Steel Guard with Fang or Snow

Favorite would have to be all the battles leading up to Demise from Skyward Sword, all three of the final bosses in KHBbS, or Fire Emblem Awakening's Grima. Not really a set, but, I wuv it. Another, which barely anyone will even know about, is the God King, from Infinity Blade I on iOS, which wasn't a set necessarily. That was a beast video game.

I can't really think of my least favorite... I don't play too many bad games xP

Infinity Blade is a beast game. I played 1 and 2, but I haven't gotten too far into 3 yet...

One of my least favorites was actually fighting the various incarnations of Majora in Majora's Mask. It's too bad, because I adore and love the rest of the game to tiny bits, but I don't know: the final boss just sort of felt like a let down. Mainly because if you've managed to get the Fierce Deity mask, it pretty much breaks the battle. It's so OP, it hurts.

Also, the final Blot in Epic Mickey. Now, the first Blot fight you have on Mickeyjunk Mountain is really awesome and satisfying and hard, and if that had been the end of the game, I actually wouldn't have minded too much. But then, for the great Blot, having the final boss just be an obstacle course really felt anti climactic. (Again, one of my favorite games of all time, but didn't like the final boss. Go figure.).

Now, for favorites.

I think every King K.Rool battle I've fought has been among the most satisfying sequence in my gaming history. K. Rool is hard, because so much of it depends on getting the timing down, and just as you think you've got the hang of it, the wily croc shakes it up with some new moves. It felt like every time you thought you had him on the ropes, he came back with something new, and it was simultaneous frustrating and invigorating. Like, it was annoying that he was almost cheap at times, but when you did finally figure him out, it felt so damn good to take him out. K. Rool made you work for it, and I think that's what made the game all the more memorable.

Also, the fight with Ganon in both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess was great.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Death Ball-->Greater Egg Robo-->Eggman-->Doomsday Zone. About 6 fights in total.

The final gauntlet of Kingdom Hearts II, and the final gauntlet of Days as well.

I'm trying to think of if the Arkham game finales count as a Set... if they do, then City and Origins and even Asylum have fantastic finishes.

Does Shadow of the Colossus as just one whole big final boss set?

Just the whole marathon finish of Birth by Sleep.

Infinity Blade is a beast game. I played 1 and 2, but I haven't gotten too far into 3 yet...

Dude I know. I love Infinity Blade. I'm getting 2 today. Still trying to unlock the Infinity Blade on 1; it's like 510,000 gold :/

Speaking of the Fierce deity mask it's pretty much a "You win" sign as it literally breaks the game.

As for King K.Rool Battles...my favorite is the one from Donkey Kong 64 I love that battle so much ^_^

I really enjoyed the final boss battles of Naruto Storm 3 and 358/2 Days.
