Why does YouTube need so many resolutions?

Posted

YouTube now supports 1440p as an actual resolution rather than "Original". Seems pointless to me.

YouTube only needs the following resolutions:

Original (for 1440p, Ultra HD/4K & 8K)

1080p

720p

576p

480p

360p

240p

Seriously, we don't need anything else.

The resolution choice is there so you can change it in case a video or a stream is loading very slowly

It needs so many resolutions because it has so many problems.

im sorry okay

Youtube confuses me sometimes xD

Fool. An artist should have a right to choose what resolution their video can be in.

Well they would in my options. No point supporting a resolution that is only ever going to be used for PC games.

I don't understand.

Because they're scare of adding 13-96p.

For you who has the best internet connection in the world

the choice of lowering the resolution is to increase the loading speed of the video and the streaming.

Whenever a stream is lagging with me I lower the resolution and BAAM....it works normally

not everyone is a 1080 pee+ nerds, some of us can live without super duper 2000p resolution

What are you on about? My list of resolutions covers that and more. It has the two most used LD resolutions, two most used SD resolutions and two most used HD resolutions and an "Original" option to cover all resolutions higher than 1080p.

but mine, whenever I up the resolution the video loads slower than usual

I mostly use 720p most of the time

Also, the choice is there for anyone who wants it

If you don't want it...ignore it

God, my list covers 720p. My list has plenty of choices. All but one of those resolutions are already supported by YouTube. You can lower the resolution to 240p or 360p if you want Low Definition.

Since you can't read my list properly I'll explain what my list is in terms of being different to what YouTube has right now.

144p and 1440p will be removed since they're completely pointless and not used unless you're recording a select few PC games at native resolution.

And 576p is added so there is two Standard Definition resolutions. 576p was chosen since is one of the two most used Standard Definition resolutions in the world.

Didn't you just list most, if not all, of the resolutions that YouTube already uses? You gripe about one when there're already six others.

I don't really see the point of your complaining... It's not like having 1440p will ruin your life or something.

No, I'm stating that 144p and 1440p are pointless, there's no point having them as options. No one uses them. Only have the resolutions that are actually used. Make the resolution list the perfect size not a giant rectangle.

Thats normal, every business wants to become the best. besides, they think that adding a new resolution option may attract more people or make people

happier (which is weird).

but seriously? 1440p???

I wonder whats coming next xD

No one uses 1440p. In terms of TV resolutions the next one is 8K. But that's a long time away since Ultra HD/4K only came out this year and it's only for TVs 55" and bigger.

Speak for yourself. I NEED 144p so I can watch long Youtube videos. Trying to watch in anything else is a nightmare for my crap internet. Especially since Youtube started doing that stupid thing where it only buffers the video in segments instead of buffering the whole video ONCE. Gone are the days when you could leave the video and come back in a couple of minutes and watch the ENTIRE video without it ever buffering again. It was a sad, sad day for Youtubers with abysmally slow internet.

Yeah, you won't notice a difference on smaller TVs.

LOL. What do you have dial-up?

Why not? 1440p is for people who have fast enough Internet to stream better than 1080p, but not fast enough to stream 4K, of course. It's a standard resolution, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1440p#QHD_.282560.C3.971440.29 . There's probably just as much 1440p content around as there is 4K content.

Why not? People like to watch PC game footage on YouTube...Your argument is like saying that 720p is pointless because we have 540p and 1080p

No, thank god. Just the next worse thing. A cheap hotspot my dad uses that's only fast for a few hours a month. I'm not exaggerating.I used to have dial-up though. Worse thing ever.

720p is a commonly used resolution though. 1440p is only used for select PC games, you won't get a 1440p TV or 1440p TV channel. And 540p isn't commonly used.

I just do auto, I don't even bother with that stuff.

That's still more than 4K is being used for, currently. There are no 4K TV channels either. As for the 540p thing, I just meant that saying "720p is pointless because we have SD resolutions (480p, 540p, 576i) and 1080p" is the same thing as saying "1440p is pointless because we have 1080p and 4K". It's not true, it's good to have something in-between.I mean just look at the PC games example that you bring up. Currently some PC games aren't optimized enough to run at 4K on particular setups, so they settle for 1440p instead. With your logic, should they settle on 1080p when they're able to do 1440p?

I never said they can't use 1440p, I said "Original" (for 1440p, Ultra HD/4K & 8K). Have advanced resolutions that are hardly used under one.
