Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII Demo impressions(post yours here)

Posted

So I've downloaded and finished the LRFFXIII demo yesterday

And I have to admit ....while I had my problems,I've enjoyed what I've played

The battle system kinda reminds me of Crisis Core(which is good) but fused with the dressphere system from X-2

It gets a while to get used to but it's a fun system

While I had fun with the demo,I have three complaints

1The graphics looks less detailed than XIII-2 for some reason, you'd think it'll be easier to achieve detailed graphics at the end of the Ps3 life cycle, but it's not that big of a deal

2The inventory is very ...very limited which is my biggest gripe so far, why???

in the demo I was able to carry only 3 X-potions and 2 Phoenix Downs, sure the slots will expand as you progress but why the limitation??It wasn't limited in XIII or XIII-2 so why it's limited now??

3the demo was way too short and it didn't show how the time mechanic works, you just beat the monster that Lumina summoned and the demo ends there....at least it could've been better if they let us try the city of Luxerion for a little bit of time like the Bresha Ruins demo from XIII-2

That's my experience with the demo so far,and I really need to play the whole game to have a better judgement on.......it's one of those games where I can't judge it before I play it and I can't either believe the reviewers for it.

So what's your opinion about the demo?

Well, it IS a demo.

For example, I played the Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction demo. It VASTLY differed from the final game I ultimately played.

In all, just wait. You might be surprised to how much better it could be.

Yeah,I guess you're right.

At least it's not like Sonic 06 where the demo was better than the actual game

Yeah,I guess you're right.

xD Yeah.

Just have to wait. Just have to wait.

My only issue was the ATB.  Unless there's a way to recharge it faster that I just didn't read I spent a good amount of time just walking around waiting for it to get full enough to use better attacks.

I've played the Lightning returns demo and..........its actually pretty good,I like this new battle system, its fun,its complexe yet simple to understand,(it reminds me of Final Fantasy V) and I finally feel like I'm controlling what's happening in battles unlike the previous XIII games.I like the fact that you can guard and you don't have to rely on stupid AI to heal you, health doesn't regenerate after each battle, there no auto battle command to do everything for you,I like the ATB gauge. I also like the new Snow,he's interesting. The intro cutscene was great,I like the fact that you can customize Lightning the way you want with all those different jobs and ability. The only things that bugged me was Lumina,if she like a creature of chaos or whatever, why must she look and sound like a 13 years old girl and why is she so similar to Serah, but I guess there's an explanation for all this later in the game.We didn't see a lot of story which is understandable since its a demo, but its still disappointing,I just hope its not as bad as the previous XIII games. They barely talked ablout the time limit,I still don't know how it works and how they expect us to explore and do sidequests.I think there's a way to stop time, but still,I don't want a time limits like this in RPGs,the 13 days should have been a part of the story, not a part of the gameplay.

I liked it,but I still won't buy it,not until its price drops,I'm not sure if the story will be good, all the characters I didn't like in XIII will return in this game, the time limit bugs me.I have too many doubt to buy it full price and there are other game I have to get before this one.

1. Really? Alright its your opinion, but IMO, the graphics looked better than XIII-2, look at this comparison with Yeul from XIII-2 and Yeul from LR:

I think it looks alot better. Besides, graphics don't make a game good, sure we don't want the game to look like shit, but games with sprites show that you dont need amazing realistic graphics to have an amazing game. :)

2. Actually i checked, the limit for items in the demo in 6. I know, its pretty small, but Truth be told, if you know how to play the game well, you won't really need items all that much except for boss fights and if you've had to many normal fights wearing you down. Besides, most of us have played KH, we can do pretty well at another Action RPG like LR. Plus, in KH, at the start, the most items you can have is only 3 at a time. If anything, we're getting a better number of items compared to what we couldve gotten.

3. True, but this was just the E3 demo, they were too lazy to choose another place to show us, since it would take up more time to edit. This one was already pre-made for E3 2013, so they kept this one instead. : But, at least it gave us a feel for the game's gonna be, i thought it was enough for now. :)

Im looking forward to this. Ive been waiting for LR for over a year now, and its finally coming. Im getting this day 1, ill save getting DBZ BOZ for a later date.

This 13 days is part of the story aswell as gameplay. You have to extend the time limit to the 13th day in order to progress in story and get to the final boss. But i see your point. BUt there's a really cheap trick to help with this. There's this EP consuming move you get early on, called "Chronostasis"(that totally wasnt named off of Crono Trigger) which freezes time for an hour in game for only 1-2 EP(depending on what difficulty your on) but enemies and NPC's still move around so you can replenish your EP easy so when it ends, you can refreeze it. And then, when your done with that day, just go to an inn and sleep for the remaining hours left in the day, and you'll advance to the next day. So really, you can make it so the time limit doesn't have much affect on you other than progressing to the next day. :P

The issue of limited inventory will come into play against the later bosses of the game and the super bosses

Do you have an idea of how much Phoenix Downs I used against Jet Bahamut in XIII-2???? I can't even count even though I maxed out Medic,Commando and Ravager roles, that boss was so hard and I heard that the final boss of LRFFXIII might be even harder

Granted if I played my strategies right I might not need to heal much but I like having the choice to carry so many items if I have enough gills ....and I hate overgrinding until I overlevel the boss

Again if the inventory size increases as you progress like KH I'll be very happy

I'll get the game day 1........if only because it'll fill my time while I'm waiting for Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze

True, but by the end of the game you have 10+ item slots, and there's always EP for using Curaga. :) Plus, there's Mediguard which is useful for healing HP aswell, and if you can time that guard right you can block attacks with no damage sustained at all.

From what ive seen the final boss of LR is harder than XIII-2's, but since this is an action RPG it'll be easier to block and avoid attacks so you don't have to stand there and take the hits like in XIII and XIII-2. Also, the most difficult mode we can choose in LR from the start is Normal, you can't do Hard unless you beat the game once with New Game Plus. : So it won't be that bad.

Fair enough, but the only way to level up in this game is through doing qwuests. If you do 50+ sidquests, you should be set for the rest of the game, there are 62 in all.

And it does upgrade for the item slots, when you do main story missions.

I haven't played the demo since I'm waiting for the final game to come out before giving it a go but it looks like the gameplay and battle looks much more fun than the last 2 games. The story is much better this time from the demo since they explain things much better than the last 2 games; atleast we know what our goal is to do in the game.
