DS Virtual Console for Wii U announced and bringing Nintendo Network IDs onto mobile devices and some sort of health-related platform

Posted

At some point in the future, you will be able to play Nintendo DS games on the Wii U.

In order to increase the usefulness of the Wii U GamePad, Nintendo will be bringing Nintendo DS titles to the Wii U Virtual Console in the future, the company announced today, during a financial results briefing.

Nintendo stated they needed to overcome a technical hurdle before this was a possibility.

But not 3DS. What are you on Nintendo?

Nintendo DS games will be ported onto the Wii U's virtual console, Nintendo has announced.

The reveal just popped up on Nintendo Japan's site (via NintendoLife). The only picture demonstrating the conversion is an image of Brain Age where the GamePad screen is divided vertically to emulate the spine of the DS.

It may seem somewhat odd to port games from a dual-screen system onto another dual-screen system and only use one of the screens, but peeling one's eyes between the adjacent DS screens is a lot less cumbersome than looking back and forth between your lap and TV. Plus the dimensions of the Gamepad emulate those of a DS when turned on its side. It's unclear if all games will make this same sort of transition or if others will in fact use both screens. Perhaps all titles will come with an option for both? That would be pretty slick.

We've contacted Nintendo asking for clarification on exactly how this will work and we'll let you know if we get confirmation either way.

Additionally, Nintendo showed off a video of its "quick-load" update that will allow players to boot up software on the GamePad slightly quicker than waiting for it to also manifest itself on the TV. Using this feature means you're taken to a slightly different menu where you first select the software you wish to run, then the user, and it goes straight into game

Elsewhere tonight Nintendo announced that it will be bringing Nintendo Network IDs onto mobile devices and debuting some sort of health-related platform - possibly a 3DS accessory - in 2015.

Because the 3DS can play DS games once you insert it in

And because they should put more focus on Wii U because the 3DS is already selling itself with things like Pokemon and Monster Hunter

More money for Nintendo, isn't that what they want?

DS games will look like shit on Wii U, they look pretty crap on 3DS as it is.

And most DS games you'd have to buy pre-owned these days.

And in this day and age, games are sold digitally. PSP games are sold digitally, so should DS games.

Maybe the resolution will be increased,we don't know everything yet except Nintendo

Also, they need to sell Wii U because 3DS is already selling on it;s own

The Wii U needs it more than the 3DS

Upscaled? Lol. I rest my case.

DS Virtual Console isn't going to sell the Wii U.

I didn't say it's gonna sell,I just said the Wii U needs it more than the 3DS

It doesnt have to sell the WiiU,plus I dont think services that Xbox and Sony have ever sold consoles either, its just another means to get software purchases,it may not sell systems, but its just another way to get software downloads, which will help Nintendo.

I guess it makes more sense to put it on WiiU to show off more use of the gamepad, since people keep saying that devs dont know what to do with it,showing DS games on the console will show more possibilities on what they can do.

Well the Wii U is missing some killer apps so this is a pretty good move for the Wii u since it needed this more than the 3DS. The 3DS has enough good titles already tio make it sell millions of units.

I can already play DS games on my 3DS, and the cartridges are pretty cheap for pre-owned games these days, so I'm fine with that not getting DS support. DS games on the big screen though? Heck yeah! Can't wait to try this out! :D

Also, I'm sure they'll get them to look fine on the TV. They'll also run on just the Gamepad, so there's that option, too. I think I'll be spending most of my time with the TV mode, though.

I'm so excited for this! :D I've already got a decently sized DS game library, but I'm hoping they'll put some of the ones I missed up on the eShop. Getting to play DS games on the big screen would be cool, anyway. If they release, say, Pokemon or The World Ends With You, I probably wouldn't mind buying them a second time for the big screen update. xD

Also, I wonder if this could lead to a 3DS Player for Wii U, like how the Gamecube had a Gameboy Player. They'd have to cut the 3D features like with the 2DS, but I think it'd be pretty cool.

I thought about the idea of DS games being available on Virtual Console, but I never thought it would actually happen. We haven't even gotten any GameCube titles yet, so I don't see any for DS coming anytime soon.

No I didn't say it needed it because of sales

I said it just needed it...nothing else

I meant that the 3DS had enough and it's selling on it's own...I didn't say DS games are the killer apps of Wii U

Btw,you can play Ps1 games on Ps3 and you've never complained about resolution there

Also,Final Fantasy IV DS on a big screen.....YESS

Sounds great till the upscaling kills it. If only they would add some filter option like Desmune, this could turn out excellent.

Nah I'm fine with my games on my 3DS. If only they added GBA games on the 3DS, but looks like that will never happen.

I'd be all for that, but I own way too many copies of Final Fantasy IV already. I'd have to pass on the DS version being released on Wii U. xD I still think it'd be really cool if they released that, though.

Mark me down as excited to see how this pans out.

If the Sonic and the Castlevania DS games comes to the Wii U,I'll buy a Wii U instantly,I've always wanted to play these particular DS games on a big screen

i think they should bump up some of the gb games or start gba games before they do ds games and btw these websites are usally fake

i remember when the ds was brand new! i feel so old. and im only 14!

This is actually old news, Iwata himself confirmed this last month. Also, this website isn't fake, it's a reliable source for news.

Also, I read that Nintendo's still working on GBA games, they're just taking a while to get them done.
