Do you know why you love Kingdom Hearts?

Posted

I sure as hell know why I love kingdom hearts, but I don't know why you people really do. I would like you all to explain why you love the series other than "omg ( insert character name) is so haaawt". I'll explain why I love the series.

When I was 7 and I got the first kingdom hearts game, I loved it. It was really hard for me at the time since I had only ever played Mario Kart 64 and some nickelodeon games, but it was really great. I couldn't get past deep jungle at the time, but i still really liked the game. The thing is though, the first kingdom hearts isn't actually what made me love the series, its sequel did that. The first kingdom hearts is a fantastic game and is very nostalgic for me, but the sequel still makes me smile when I play it to this day. I was talking to a friend when I was 8 or so and he told me about a kingdom hearts II. He knew a lot about games because he had a lot of older brothers, but all I had was a 4 year old sister so I wasn't as invested in games as him. He was talking about it and I knew it existed, but I didn't think too hard about it at the time, since I had only heard "yah its gud" about it. I was walking in my local mall a few weeks or months later and I saw a cardboard cutout of the front cover of Kingdom hearts II in front of my local game store. I think thats when I had my first orgasm. I freaked the firetruck out. I was all like WHOA IS MICKEY MOUSE A NINJA WHOA IS SORA A NINJA WHOA WHOS THAT BLONDE KID.I know I bought the game soon after but my 3rd party memory card didn't support that game so several months later I had to buy a newer 3rd party memory card and that ended up working. In the time that the first memory card didn't work though, I actually didn't give a crap that it didn't work. I played the hell out of the game and it quickly became my favorite game of all time. The opening sequence with roxas was so amazingly epic and full of amazing moments made playing through the opening segment countless times worth it. From the diz and namine moments, to the 7 wonders, fighting axel, seeing that firetrucking awesome riku vs roxas scene, and finally waking sora up in that amazingly sad but heartwarming section made it all worth it. Then when I got a working memory card, I appreciated the game so much more. The ansem reveal, the crazy ass combat, the disney worlds(especially tron), the hollow bastion crisis in the middle game, and finally the world that never was made the game my favorite game of all time. The amazing pacing and just story in general of the roxas part is the best first 2-3 hours of any game in my opinion. Really, all of that was what made me love kingdom hearts. The hype i had for it and the game itself(especially ansem the wise and the opening segment) just added up to an extreme love for the series.

Unfortunately the love I have for KHII isn't there for the newer games. Nomura made something amazing out of KHI and II. Nowadays that passion and dedication that went into those games doesn't feel like its there anymore in games like re:coded and ddd. bbs kind of has that spark but I would say that the KH2 and final mix secret endings were even more epic than bbs itself. I give such extreme criticisms towards some of the later games because I love the series so much and I want it to be as good in terms of both story, worlds, and gameplay as KHII. I have little hope that KHIII is going to give me that same firetruck yeah this is the best thing evah feeling that KHII gave me because that spark has been gone so much in later games that it makes me sad.

Because 1 reason and one reason only: Kairi... [specifically KH1 Kairi, but KH2 Kairi works too because reasons...]

There's something about her personality and what she represents that really touches me at a fundamental level. Plus, she's cute.

Yes Kairi, I am talking about you... And yes, there is text floating above your head. Deal with it xD

I got GBA version of COM when I was 13: I loved the sense of nostalgia it gave me.

During the worst summer of my life ever two years ago, I replayed DAYS six times: I laid in bed at night utterly lost in Roxas's world, loving every second of it, even when it came to it's shattering end.

To be honest, Kingdom Hearts was probably the only thing that gave me hope enough to not kill myself.

That is why I love it.

That's all.

I completely agree with you, Christopher Sexbang. Now the main reason why I love KH is because I love LOVE Disney. But I agree with your criticisms. That level of scope, emotion, and action that was in KH1 and KH2 isn't in the other games (BBS was a better effort). I think the reason that is is because Nomura and the writers won't let the past go. They won't let go of any characters (coughAxelcoughXioncoughRoxas), they won't explore any new ideas, or really any new inferesting worlds, and they aren't taking any new risks. But I have hope that KH3 will breathe new life into the franchise. Gameplay wise, the series is excellent, but I want a more involving storyline.

The battle system.

I'm sure if you go through my "Importance of Being" threads, you can find more than a few good reasons. The short-short version: I love that the first one dared to do something different than your average game. Not necessarily with gameplay, but focusing a story on surrealism and emotion. There was enough in the game to think about and chew on after playing through it that I can't help but enjoy it long after it was over. Also, by having a main character visit the Disney movies that I had personally grown up with, and visiting the characters that I knew, really touched a chord with my own experience in the game, and every level I visited gave me something fun within my own reserve of nostalgia.

It's also worth pointing out that I love Sora as a main character. It's refreshing and nice to play as an RPG hero who actually seems to enjoy what he's doing. People gripe that he's too "goody-good," but honestly, that's what I like. I like heroes who actually act like heroes, and Sora can do it without being preachy or overbearing. He's just a guy who has a good sense of right and wrong. There's something to be said for a guy who can hang out with a crowd of people ranging from Cloud Strife to Winnie the Pooh.

I just found Kingdom Hearts while I was scrolling the Internet. I must've been young (I think 6 or 7. I don't know, I can't remember) when I first found it. After finishing watching the cutscenes of the first Kingdom Hearts, I kept going. Here's how I went:

Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts II

Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days

Kingdom Hearts Re:coded

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

I believe that's how it went. Thank you for your time to listen, I think.

I honestly think sora is a bit annoying after the first game, but he is a good example of a video game hero. My personal favorite video game hero is Yuna from FFX because she cares about others enough to unconditionally give her life for them without a second thought.

It's fine. I liked it :3.

Well, I have numerous reasons for loving Kingdom Hearts to death, but my main ones are that thanks to this amazing video game series, I met the love of my life, Inori, who is a member of this site, and well, thanks to Kingdom Hearts, I was able to meet her!  And well, here are my other reasons for loving this amazing video game series. The key thing that makes me have such a strong emotion to the series is Riku.  He's a character that had to overcome his own darkness, coming to grips with the sins he had committed, and going against all odds to redeem himself.  Personally, I had low self esteem and often hated myself back at Elementary school/Junior High, but when I saw how Riku was able to overcome his obstacles, I thought:  "Heck, if he can do it, then so can I!"  And well, I am who I am today thanks to Kingdom Hearts, therefore it'll always have a place in my heart.  Also, another reason for loving this series is the amount of fan service the games contain for Disney fans.  I means seriously, playing through the Disney worlds brought back such good memories, and I started hunting down Disney movies to sate my hunger for watching the amazing films that appear as worlds in the series.  The story of the series is well made and very intriguing, and it leaves enough mysteries to make your head hurt, so that's yet another reason why I love the series!  I have many more reasons, but yeah, these are my main main reasons for loving the masterpiece that is Kingdom Hearts. :)

It taught me the importance of friendship, perserverance, and taught me that anyone can be a warrior in their own right

Well, where to begin.......I guess first off it was the story line that drew me in. Kingdom Hearts was the first video game I ever got serious with and I was impressed with how complex the story was for a video game. I also immediately fell in love with the characters. Another thing I love is the amount of symbolism found in the whole story itself. I love picking out things like that and Kingdom Hearts is one story I will never get tired of analyzing.

Because I adore this crossover and the idea of visiting Disney movie worlds with near-perfect quality compared to the actual films.

I like Kingdom Hearts because of the Disney characters .
