Posted May 13, 201412 yr Fan service, fanservice, or service cut is a term originating from anime and manga fandom for material in a series which is intentionally added to please the audience. It is about "servicing" the fan - giving the fans "exactly what they want". Tell me again how that is a bad thing.

It can potentially be a bad thing because some creators might just ASSUME what the fans want and give something half-assed instead of something they might actually wanted to see.
May 13, 201412 yr Author It can potentially be a bad thing because some creators might just ASSUME what the fans want and give something half-assed instead of something they might actually wanted to see. Technically it wouldn't be fanservice then. It's "giving the fans "exactly what they want".
May 13, 201412 yr The thing is, the fanbase is an incredibly broad group of people, all with different interests, as well as wants. What one person might want is completely different from what someone else would want. For example, a lot of fans love seeing naked people running around in an anime. I personally don't care for that type of fanservice. The thing is, it's impossible to give every fan exactly what the want, because there's likely going to be at least one fan who disagrees with the majority. As such, people will always complain about fanservice.

Some seem to assume that the only thing fans want is yaoi or anything similar to that.
May 13, 201412 yr Well, it can be a bad thing if the developers assume that what the vocal minority of the fandom wants is what the majority of the fandom want. I shall leave it at that and not have this turn into a SoRiku vs SoKai battle thread... But just in case:
May 13, 201412 yr Look at MGS4. TONS OF FAN SERVICE and it is widely considered the worst out of the original 4. And Hideo Kojima hated making it and he hates the game overall. It is a game that only exist purely from fanservice and look what it turned out to be.
May 13, 201412 yr Well, from what I know - I don't really mind for fanservice so long as it does not kill the game/drama/series/anime...etc There can be good fanservice like creating a sequel from KH1 and Making KH2, then there is the bad fanservice of bringing back Sin in in the FFX. One great example of GOOD fanservice would be for NINTENDO to get their frickin act together and make another good Zelda game with great graphics and music like they did in Twilight Princess (I've enshrined my copy of Twilight Princess...best friggin Zelda game ever). A neutral example of fanservice would be Ganondorf's recurring character (and to an extent people wanting Midna back). But one thing that remains true for most of us, even though most of us complain about fanservice - we are still the dumb suckers who end up forking over our cold-earned cash for the fan-service media thats being produced and marketed. Such is the game of business ~ (P.S: what I wrote is my opinion, so It may differ to yours) Edited May 13, 201412 yr by catmaster0116
May 13, 201412 yr If they fans were given everything they want. We'd have nothing interesting and new, but just what we think would be good for the series... When in the end would leave us disinterested.
May 14, 201412 yr Fan service obviously can't please all fans so instead a developer listens to the loudest of the fans and goes straight to appealing those specific fans, disregarding what the rest of the fan base may want. There's a good chance that the part of the fan base that is the loudest is also the part too wrapped up in themselves to actually consider that their idea may not be a good one so they shout about it from the rooftops, totally oblivious to the awfulness of their idea.
