This is a bit of an idea I've had floating around in my head for a long time now. I can already tell I'll get a TON of opposition (Probably a ton of nasty comments as well) for this, but it's still something I felt like sharing. So, Days and Coded were obviously given the short end of the stick with the HD ReMixes. However, I remember hearing Square say that they wanted to remake Days, but were unable to due to time constraints. So, what would be a cool idea to fill the gap before KHIII would be a new HD collection. What games? 358/2 Days, Re:Coded, and Dream Drop Distance (I know it's recent, but playing it on a TV would be cool, too.) What system? Well, I know I'll get a ton of crap for this, but... Wii U. I feel like it would work best on the Wii U. Why? Since the games were originally on DS, it would be fitting to port them to Wii U, which already essentially has a second screen. This would be most useful for DDD due to its intensive use of the second screen, but I'm sure that it'd be nice for Days and Re:Coded, as well. Now then, going into more detail on how I think they could handle this...
First off, I feel as though this one fix would immensely make both Days and Re:Coded much more enjoyable: Update them to the Dream Drop Distance engine. Part of the reason why they felt a little stiff and awkward was because the DS put a limit the games. Using a more recent, more flexible engine would make them a lot more fun. Now then, on to the individuals:
So, how would Days be handed on an HD console? First of all, I think that it should be redone gameplay-wise. The DS version of Days was repetitive and bland in terms of gameplay. If they remake it, the first fix would have to be to redo the combat system. Days felt more button-mash intensive than even KHII, which is saying a lot. They should balance the combat so that you can do much more than the wimpy three hit combo with most Keyblades. Making the basic attack feature more similar to KHI or KHII would definitely improve the game's system.
The game was obviously made for short sessions, likely while on the go. That's why there was a mission based system. I'm not saying they'd have to remove this system, but maybe make it feel less tedious for longer term play sessions on the TV. Add more variety to the basic filler missions that went on in between plot points. Don't make all of them "Kill X Heartless X amount of times," add in more original ideas for missions. There wouldn't have to be a ton of major changes here, just update the system to suit TV sessions rather than short sessions on a tiny screen. Also, I'd definitely say that they should keep the panels that were in the original version. I don't know how many people liked that, but I personally did, and think that it should return. It felt a lot more strategic, as well as more rewarding to earn the panels.
My third and last point would have to be the Mission mode. First of all, they should balance Mission mode depending on how many players there are. For one player, make it maybe a little tougher than the story mode, then go on from there with more players. The missions felt like they were made for multiplayer, but it was tough to find other people to play with. Going from that point, online co-op should be added. Mission mode was perfect for online play, and it's a shame that it was never included in the original DS title. Also, allowing for local co-op through either splitscreen, or having one player use the Gamepad while another uses the TV, would work, although not quite as well due to different control styles. Perhaps they could even add some sort of PVP mode like in BBS, but with more arenas. They could even allow for 4 player battle royales, and maybe make them take place in an entire world. That way, you have to hunt around for your opponents. I think adding these features for a KH Days remake would make it a lot more fun to play.
How could Re:Coded be fixed to make it fit better on the Wii U? Well, I don't think that too many changes would need to be added. However, incorporating all of the new Re:Coded story content from II.5 would definitely be a good starting point. Also, updating the Avatar System to work better would help. Instead of having to play with someone else with the game to get a room, it could maybe allow you to connect to people over the internet and exchange rooms, although with some sort of limit so you can't max out the rooms in one day. Also, perhaps special rooms could be given to you depending on how many people you have on your Wii U friends list. Those minor updates to the Avatar System would be really nice. Also, while this might be a stretch, they could allow two player co-op over the internet, similar to mission mode in Days. You could team up with a friend to fight your way through the System Sector. I think that would be really fun, as well.
Also, I feel like adding more quests, or making them more than "Go through old system sector, get points, buy prize, etc.) would make the post-game more fun. Each world in the original had three or so quests, and they were all very basic. For those who don't know what I'm referring to, there would be an NPC in each world who would ask you to find a certain item they needed or lost. You'd go to a System Sector, clear it, and exchange points for that item. It was an interesting concept, but could be used in a more effective manner. Perhaps they could hide away the items in a certain area, or make more types of quests than just item fetches. They could even add a few more areas and a few bosses to make them more fun and varied.
And, of course, the final game would be Dream Drop Distance. What would need to be changed to make this fit the HD console better? Well, the game already feels well-suited for a console. However, there are certainly some parts they could fix, and some new features that could be added. First off is the Flowmotion. I loved Flowmotion, but it was way too easy to abuse. If they remake this game, they should fix it so that there's some sort of limit to how often you can use Flowmotion techniques. Maybe a bar similar to MP in KHII, that slowly regenerates and allows you to use techniques when it fills.
Next off, they could add the boss rematches for the bosses that couldn't be fought again. For example, make secret portals that allow the player to have a rematch with Ansem and the Anti Black Cloak, and maybe even add some to let the player have updated rematches with Xemnas, Young Master Xehanort, Armored Ventus Nightmare, and Chernabog.
My third idea is to make it easier to form bonds with Dream Eaters. Spending ages playing minigames got tedious when trying to do so with multiple Dream Eaters. Maybe they could gain the stats in battle along with the usual minigames and pet sessions. Anything to make 100% easier.
My final idea involves Flick Rush. I loved Flick Rush. What would make it even better? You probably guessed by now: Online Multiplayer. Adding in a way to compete with real players would make the game much more enjoyable. They could maybe even allow players to form tournaments like they can in Mario Kart 8. I feel like it would be a nice little touch to make things much more enjoyable, and get more playtime out of the game.
So, that's it. I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for this, but it's something that I feel would be interesting, and wanted to share with everyone!
