Everyday i see people criticizing Sora's attitude in 3D, that he was even more naive and idiotic in this game, than in any other of the games he's starred in. And i'm not going to say this is false or anything, this is definitely the truth, and most people don't like it. However, most people don't actually seem to bring up or think about WHY, he acts like this in this game, instead of acting like he did in the other ones. If you think about it, he actually has alot of reasons for acting like this, and thus justifies his intelligence in 3D. That being said, it's not neccessarily a good thing, i'm just saying that it is justified.
First off, think about Sora's situation in both Kingdom Hearts I and II(not going to go in COM, his memories were being screwed with and that completely changed his personality at points, like when all he was obsessed with was saving Namine). In KHI, Sora had his home destroyed and was given the responsibility of saving the worlds with the keyblade. That was a pretty heavy thing to put him on from the start, given he was just a kid at this point, who knew nothing about the other worlds until now. Not to mention it didn't help that during all of this, Riku was turning over to the dark side, and Kairi was basically in a coma and was missing for most of the game, so that was a pretty big personal conflict for him aswell, given that he was basically losing his friends in all of this and that there was a good chance he wouldn't be able to save them. So while he did maintain his happy, go-lucky attitude during his adventure, he obviously wasn't super laid back like he was in 3D given these events and tried to handle the situation as seriously as he could. Sure, he still did follow his heart every now and then, but he definitely took the situation at hand seriously, and didn't act like too much of a naive child because of that. And in the end, he did end up saving the worlds from Ansem SOD, and he got Kairi back to their home safe and sound, but Riku got trapped in the RoD, and thus, his journey continued.
Flashforward a year later to KHII, once again Sora's on another mission to save the worlds from the "Evil" Organization XIII. It was already established from the beginning that this journey would be harder than his first, and for all Sora knew at this point, Riku was probably still in the RoD, fending off heartless or that he could possibly be consumed by his darkness already. At this time, Sora also started to realize that as long as he could wield the keyblade, the heartless wouldn't stop trying to attack the worlds and he wouldn't have the chance to go back to a normal care-free life like any normal teenager would. It didn't help that things got even more hectic and serious when Kairi ended up getting kidnapped by the Organization, and Sora couldn't find Riku until the end of the game. Given all of these events, it's obvious Sora was trying to put on a brave front and not stop pushing himself until he finally made sure his friends and the worlds were safe and sound, and he could finally end his journey. He took this journey very seriously aswell, which explains why he wasn't incredibly naive and idiotic 24/7(at least, not to 3D's levels).
Now, let's take a look at 3D. Prior to taking the Mark of Mastery, Sora had already saved all of the worlds from Xehanort, TWICE, and was arguably the strongest keyblade wielder at this point. He finally got his friends back safe and sound, and had the chance to relax and bask in the peace that he had helped bring about with his actions, and finally just take a break from saving the world for a few months and be carefree, like any normal kid. Then he and Riku were asked to take the Mark of Mastery and prove that they were worthy of being Masters in preparation for stopping. Xehanort a third time. Keep in mind, the Mark of Mastery was intended just to be a test of their skills and to help them use the keyblades the proper way. It wasn't supposed to be a live threatening journey at all, Xehanort rigging the exam was never intended to happen, it was originally just supposed to be what Yen Sid it was: A test, and that's it. So think about Sora's state of mind at this point.
This is a naive, optimistic, carefree kid who originally spent the first 14 years of his life on the Islands with his two best friends that got thrown into this keyblade wielding business out of nowhere, with no training or any warning prior at all. And despite all that, he managed to save his friends and all of the worlds in existence, twice in a row. Not to mention he was one of the strongest Keyblade wielders at this point, and had braved many trials to get this far. This test was just supposed to re-learn him in wielding the keyblade, as opposed to his last 2 journeys which called for him to take them seriously, as he had to save the worlds from these many threats. Another point to bring up is that in 3D, he didn't really have any impending personal dilemnas to worry about, like how in his last 2 journeys, he had to worry about Kairi's wherabouts and safety and Riku's conflict and struggle against the darkness. Given these new circumstances, and Sora's previous sucesses, he most likely didn't see any point in trying to take the situation too seriously(remember, no one had any idea Xehanort rigged this), so he just acted like his normal self. A naive, optimistic, carefree kid who followed his heart however it felt, and didn't really listen to his common sense all that much. Which is exactly how Xehanort caught him off guard(well that, and the over complicated time travel that was involved to make it this far) and managed to capture him.
Like i said, Sora was a dumbass in 3D, but if you think about it, it was definitely justified and makes sense. Not saying i like it, but it makes sense. That being said, after the events of 3D, i think he'll definitely go back to taking the situation more seriously and not being a complete idiot 24/7 in III, given that now he knows that Xehanort almost managed to turn him into a darkness, and knows that he is definitely not a threat to be taken lightly.
