October 24, 201410 yr Popular Post This is indeed revolutionary, and as a student of medicine I believe this is a remarkable feat. (Great Job Australia! And to Dr Victor Chang) Though the heart can only be stored for 20mins before implantation which doesn't give it alot of time. Hearts which have technically 'died' from aging and thus have tissue damage related to aging are probably not applicable since the SA node or intrinsic pacemaker cells may no longer be functional. So I'm assuming the heart came from healthy individuals who have died and their hearts transplanted within 20 mins of storage resuscitation. Now if only they could store the hearts for longer without cardiac tissue damage or better yet, grow functional hearts from stem cells - that would really develop into an organ pool! Makes me wanna be a cardiologist even more now haha

Makes me wanna be a cardiologist even more now haha Well, that would make the "donors" of the hearts be people who have died in accidents or other causes that didn't involve Diseases or, of course, a Heart Attack, right? Dr. House could have used this if the show hadn't finished u.u Edited October 24, 201410 yr by SkyKeybladeHero
October 24, 201410 yr And yet the government wants to reduce funding for this kind of research just to stop a non-existent "budget emergency". Thanks Tony!
October 24, 201410 yr Forgive me for sounding ignorant, but hasn't this already been done before? Or is there a different classification for when a heart is "dead" or not? Cause I do realize for most transplants they try to rush those things over as soon as possible, so does this mean that these hearts are less...well "fresh"? I haven't really been keeping up in the world of modern medicine.
