The only open world game I played was Skyrim. I am interested in playing more open worlds games now because I have heard that people really like them and that gave me a reason to try more open world games. This will also give me an idea on how to play zelda u when it comes out next year.  I am planning on getting one of these types of games for my Christmas present.

Well, I'd personally recommend Far Cry 3 (Or as IGN says, "Like Skyrim with guns") and Grand Theft Auto 5. They're pretty awesome, but both have some pretty sketchy content and some vicious swearing, and I don't know how old you are or what games you'd be able to play. 

 

I also hear that Xenoblade Chronicles and Just Cause 2 are great open world games, but I haven't played them, so I can't really vouch for them. I honestly can't think of any open world games on the 3DS, but there might be some I don't know about. 

The only open world game for the Wii U I can think of is the upcoming Zelda Wii U, but that isn't even out yet, lol.

the wind waker is sort of an open world. 

if you liked Skyrim, you might like Fallout 3 or New Vegas too since they're basically the same thing but in a post-nuclear war setting.

Xenoblade's kind of open world. It's really good.

I wouldn't say a lot of those are "open world"... most modern games contain an explorable world of some kind. Really linear games like BioShock (shooters in general) don't allow for much backtracking, but JRPGs usually contain that. I tend to use a more traditional definition of open-world, I guess.Regardless, despite all the flak it gets, Assassin's Creed games are super fun to play. Infamous games, too, I can never recommend highly enough.

Holy shit, some people have way different definitions on "open world" than I do.

 

For 3DS, Link Between Worlds is the only one that really comes to mind; after a certain point, you can go wherever in the world you want, and that's pretty much the core of open world gaming (plus lots of side quests and optional items to collect). Paper Mario: Sticker Star isn't a bad option either, lots of branching paths and big levels to run around and try to collect everything from. It's in general pretty linear, though, and if memory serves, there are no side quests to speak of, so that's harder to recommend.

 

For PS3, Prototype is a pretty fun, if overly violent, game; lots of running around tall buildings and lots of collectibles to track down- plus, you get to karate kick helicopters in mid-air. That kind of things cannot be overrated. (I've also heard that Spiderman: Web of Shadows is pretty good too, the same basic idea as Prototype, but I haven't actually played that one so I can't vouch for fun/quality.)

Regardless, despite all the flak it gets, Assassin's Creed games are super fun to play.

 

Agreed. 2 and 4 in particular, I think, are a blast, and Black Flag especially has tons of things to do all the time, another mark of a good open world game.

For Ps3 definitely inFAMOUS. That's one of the best open world games I've played, and the sequel is really good too (better in a lot f ways, but worse in other ways)

The Ezio Trilogy isn't a bad choice in general, though I don't think either of the sequels are quite as good as 2 (I don't think Brotherhood is nearly as good as anyone else does, and Revelations has a lot of unnecessary fluff- bombs that you never need, tower defense that you'll never do if you're at all competent at the game, the first-person Desmond levels that weren't as fun as any other Desmond segments from other games).Be wary if you do get the Ezio Trilogy package though, it was rather glitchy for me- like, glitchier than AC usually is. It might be a better idea to buy them individually, they're very cheap these days.

Good point, emotions were fairly strong in Revelations. The character writing in general was pretty good in Revelations, even of the plot never seemed to go anywhere. Also, the hookblade was pretty baller and I'm disappointed it hasn't shown up again.

I'm disappointed a LOT of stuff hasn't come back from the Ezio trilogy

The hidden gun is so much better than the guns you get in the later games, the parachute could be cool. I miss plain old poison darts (berserk darts cause problems more often than not and sleep darts just lack the impact)
