Do you think Square Enix will still be able to pay Disney for the rights of their licenses?

Posted

I think most people know better than I do that Disney's licenses as of late has gone really up in price especially after they acquired Marvel heck it's already expensive to pay for the license itself let alone devote a huge amount of resources for the development of a game

Disney has pulled the rights to use Marvel licenses from Capcom not too long ago since they weren't able to to pay for it hence why all Marvel Vs Capcom games(including MvC Origins recently) has been pulled out from PSN and Xbox Live

And while Square Enix is nowhere near the same bad situation that Capcom is in now they still had their share of financial woes during the past 4 years........

My question is:What's gonna happen to Kingdom Hearts if Square couldn't pay Disney for their licenses anymore? Will the series come to a halt in the middle of it's story, will Nomura rush a conclusive ending to the entire series into the Xehanort saga if that happened?Or will he seek another company to crossover with when he loses the right to use Disney's licenses after KH3?

I'm not saying that it's gonna happen but Disney wasn't kind with Capcom at all with this sort of shit, and this is one of the reasons why I don't want Marvel(Not Star Wars just Marvel) to be in KH3 or beyond cuz aside from the debated issue of it fitting into the series or not the Marvel licenses in general nowadays are so expensive and even if the game sold well it might not be enough to cover the development cost

Again,I'm not saying that any of this would happen but I think Nomura shouldn't let his guard down and should start seeking other ways to keep the series going even if without Disney even if through a plot device,Deus ex machina or a retcon he should think of something on the side to use before it's too late

In interviews they've mentioned Disney giving Square "unprecedented" access to their properties

So I get the feeling they have a contract that gives them blanket access or something to that effect

I think he would gather money from new games or crossover, but I doubt that it will get to that point due to some of SE's new games being pretty good.

Maybe but I don't think this "unprecedented" access was for free

Cuz Capcom when making the Marvel Vs Capcom games(even back before they were acquired by Disney) they had access to every Marvel character in the book both known ones and obscure ones but they still had to pay quite the sum of money for the licenses.

My concern is that if the series didn't reach enough profitability to cover up the developmentlicensing cost Square might either come up with an ending hastly or shut down the series all together and shift the rest of the budget into Final FantasyDragon Quest similar to the Capcom situation where they can no longer make any Marvel Vs Capcom game anymore

that's... not really the same

That's using licenses to use those characters

Kingdom Hearts is Disney making a game

Umm....Square Enix is making the game dude not Disney,Disney pretty much gave Square the rights to use their characters and licenses as they see fit or in the case of Tron's Legacy use it to promote their movies. But there is no way they gave them access to all those movies and copyrighted materials for free buddy.

If Disney didn't see enough profit they can easily pull the licenses from Square and bail out of the deal if they want to.

this isn't like putting licensed characters in a fighting game though

this is Disney making a Dsiney game, and Square Enix makes it. It's first and foremost a Disney game. The series can still end because Disney doesn't think it's profitable enough, but that won't be because of some eventual decision to not let Square Enix use their properties

Dude all I meant is literally in the title, the question is will Square be able to keep paying Disney for their licenses?

Also yes it's not like putting characters into a fighting game cuz in KH's case it's much more expensive since you're not only using the characters but the entirety of the licensed materials as a whole

If anybody is getting paid to make KH, it's Square Enix.

This is a case of a company being hired to make a game, not a company making a game and wanting to use an existing license

Umm as far as I know it was Nomura who proposed to Disney if I remember...

Disney are the ones that comissioned Square to make the games for them, it's not a case where a game producer buys the licence and does a game based on that. That's why Disney owns everything on the IP other then the Square (FF and TWEWY) Characters. Yes Square where the ones to propose the partnership, but Disney are the ones that make the decisions.

KH is one of SE's most valuable franchises, I'd think they'll always have money for it unless they're literally on the brink of bankruptcy.

Even then, it's second only to Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, I doubt they'd let go of it that easily
