HUEHUE Nation: Shut up, I went to Basic Education.

Around here elementary school is K-5.  Primary school is K-8.  Elementary school is a part of primary school.

As someone whose first language isn't English, I accept you both!

I went to Primary school but I still know what elementary is.  Though I don't have a clue about what ages you are with the grades (Like I don't know what the equivalent of grade 6 is to primary), middle school and all.

Never knew primary school really. Went to elementary. You are there from like 4 to 11. It is kinda boring.

Grade: Ages

12th: 17-18

11th:16-17

10th:15-16

9th:14-15

8th:13-14

7th: 12-13

6th: 11-12

5th: 10-11

4th: 9-10

3rd: 8-9

2nd: 7-8

1st: 6-7

Kindergarten: 5-6

Grades 1-5 are Elementary (though sometimes 6th is included, just depends), 7 and 8 (and sometimes 6) are Middle, and 9-12 is High School.

I have no idea what Primary School years are, though. X_X

Australia's is trippy. Hence the confusion

  • Kindergarten (Queensland) 3- to 4-year-olds
  • Pre-school / kindergarten

  • Year 1: 6- to 7-year-olds
  • Year 2: 7- to 8-year-olds
  • Year 3: 8- to 9-year-olds
  • Year 4: 9- to 10-year-olds

Where I live (UK)

Nursery: 3-4

(P for primary)

P1: 4-5

P2: 5-6

P3: 6-7

P4: 7-8

P5: 8-9

P6: 9-10

P7: 10-11 (You would do the 11+ here which will help determine what Secondary school you get into, whether it's a grammar or essentially a state school, I think the exams been abolished now and different grammar schools have their own entrance exams)

(Secondary School, Y for Year)

There's two names used interchangeably for each year. like the first year here is year eights, but they're also refereed to as first years

These 3 are considered the Key Stage curriculum

Y8 (First Year): 11-12

Y9 (Second Years): 12-13

Y10 (Third Years): 13-14

Y11 (Fourth Years): 14-15 (GCSES)

Y12 (Fifth Years): 15-16 (GCSES)

The two below are optional, like the kid could drop out after year 12 legally and try to find work or go to tech instead

Y13 (Lower Sixth): 16-17 (AS LEVEL)

Y14 (Upper Sixth): 17-18 (A2 LEVEL)

Then you go onto University which can be any age, think the oldest one in my year I've met was 26 where they did up to their GCSEs and went on and stayed in tech for a bit before going to Uni

EDIT: Note I say for the UK but it's Northern Ireland UK, far as I know from my cousins their numbering is a little different and there's no upper and lower sixth, they go to college for those years, then University

This is how it was for me.

Primary:

{

  Elementary:

  {

Kindergarten

2nd

3rd

4th

5th

  }

  Middle:

  {

6th

7th

8th

Graduation

Secondary/High School

{

9th (Freshmen)

10th (Sophomore)

11th (Junior)

12th (Senior)

}

Graduation

I had a different school for each, but this varies by location.  My cousin went to the same school for K-8 and then went to high school.  Another of my cousins (before they moved) went to one school for K-1, another for 2-6 and a third for 7-12.  My aunt, who's a sixth grade teacher, teaches in a building just for grades 5 and 6.  Some schools are just 7th - 8th.  This is called Jr. high.  Some people go to private schools for primary school and go to public high schools.  I have a friend who went to public primary school (I think) but a private high school.  Or you can be home schooled (though I have no idea how this works).

  • 4 months later...

And the UK complicates things even more by having different systems for Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales!

In England at least, Primary school is like this:

Nursery: under 4

Reception: 4-5

Year 1: 5-6

Year 2: 6-7

Year 3: 7-8

Year 4: 8-9

Year 5: 9-10

Year 6: 10-11

And then it's secondary school. Boo. Hiss.

Year 7: 11-12

Year 8: 12-13

Year 9: 13-14

Year 10: 14-15

Year 11: 15-16

And then there's Sixth Form/College

Excuse me Primary...? It's better people called it Elementary when you're speaking english.
