I recently finished KH3D again and there's something I just can't understand and I hope someone will explain this to me.

So Xehanort's aka the bad guy's goal is to join 13 darkness together and clash them with 7 lights to forge the X-blade in order to unlock Kingdom Hearts so he can balance light and darkness and rule the world. Yep, sounds pretty bad to me.

And then Sora and his group come up with this great idea to collect 7 guardians of light in order to "stop" Xehanort's plans by doing exactly as he wants. What...? That makes no sense!

Okay I get that they don't really have a choice because then Xehanort would go after the princesses of heart but why not try to stop him with only 6 guardians for example? That would ruin his plans. And if that really is not enough to beat him then there's no harm in bringing more than 7 right? I mean we have all these people: Terra, Aqua, Ven, Sora, Kairi, Riku, Lea, Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Leon's group. That's even more people than Xehanort has! And I keep seeing a lot of people discussing who the 7 lights might be and really WHO CARES? It doesn't have to be exactly 7. We are not trying to forge the X-blade are we? We are trying to stop Xehanort's plans.

Right?

Or am I just firetrucking stupid?

No, you're right: there's a lot of ways in which Sora and friends can thwart Xehanort's plans. But Nomura loves Xehanort more than he loves good storytelling, so he's going to make the heroes blindly obey the plans of the guy they're trying to stop rather than actually try any of their other options.

We know absolutely nothing about KHIII, so hold your horses before jumping to conclusions. However, I'm pretty sure that they're not only going to have seven people fighting against the Dark 13. Yeah, seven lights are required and they have (more than) seven warriors but idk how you can just assume that characters like Donald, Goofy, Leon, Aerith, Yuffie and all those other guys aren't getting involved as well. Also, Terra is currently indisposed on account of his body being taken and spread over several beings throughout time, I don't think he's going to be of much help, in case you forgot.

Let's wait for the game to release before declaring things about Nomura, alright?

They have no choice, if they use less then Xehanort will go after the POH to fill in the rest of the numbers required, if they use more Xehanort will have more then enough so he gets his wish. Bottom line is, no matter what they do, the X-blade will be forged. And it's obvious they'll use more then 7, everyone and their mother will fight on the final battle, don't forget something, Xehanort doesn't care if he wins or loses, he just wants them to clash to forge the blade and see what happens,

Really there is no way to stop Xehanort.

They don't fight, he goes after the princesses.

They do fight, he gets exactly what he wants.

Only some of them fight, he goes after the princesses.

They're going to be forced to fight one way or another.  The only real problem is Xehanort is short a person atm.

But from what I understand the problem isn't so much stopping the fight as much as stopping Xehanort from getting the power of Kingdom Hearts. Which would be bad.

Yeah fighting can't be avoided but I just don't like how the game makes it look like the 7 vs 13 at the "fated place" is the only way to settle things.

For example why not just protect the princesses and when the seekers of darkness try to go after them just take them out one by one?

I'm pretty sure Xehanort's only motive isn't curiosity.

I didn't assume that. It just kind of sounds like that "there must only be seven". Also about Terra, I always thought that it's possible that he might be back now because Master Xehanort did not come back as apprentice Xehanort like he should have.

Well, this guy has been the puppet master this whole time so it doesn't surprise me in the least.  But I thin the 7 light/13 darkness is the way things have to be done.  Chances are there is something that Nomura's not telling us, but most likely the situation is is that the 7 lights and 13 darknesses will have to come together at some point.  Delaying will probably only cause more suffering.  As for a surprise, look no further than Lea.  In the words of Flaming Lea, he's "the walking middle finger to" this whole thing.

Because if they are defeated they just go back in their time. Riku defeated Xehanort's Heartless and Sora defeated Xemnas in DDD, didn't take long before they were there again.

Really, it's either the PoH or the GoL. If they find some way to protect them then Xehanort can just go around destroying worlds in order to make them come out.

Well a lot of the stuff that happens in these games are all kind of "fate" related.  "Destiny is never left to chance" and all that.

Xehanort even says he doesn't know how it's going to play out.  It's just fated to happen.  Besides even if they try to avoid it, Xehanort will probably find some way to make them gather wherever this "fated place" is.

And I think the Xehanort that appeared is still using Terra's body, Xehanort's heart has just completely took control at this point changing his appearance to reflect what's inside.  (also he's part of Ansem and Xemnas like Kaweebo said.  Plus there's a chance of past Terranort being one of the vessels so lots of possessed Terras everywhere)  Xehanort flat out tells Mickey that Terra (and Sora at the time) belong to him so he's definitely not back.

Oh yeah I totally forgot about that lol. Damn you DDD for making things more complicated than they need to be. :P

Yeah, destiny is definitely a big part of KH. I guess we'll see what happens in KH3 if that game even decides to show up this decade lol.

If I remember correctly ,  at the secret ending of DDD, Yen Sid said something like : "We don't have any other choice but to gather the GoL . A second Keyblade War is inevitable " . Yen Sid wants to gather the GoL to prevent Xehanort from exploiting the PoH . But this would also lead to a clash between the 13 Darknesses and the GoL , thus once again forging the x-blade .

Sora and the others are between a rock and a hard place .

Even if they bring more than 7 , it will be good for Xehanort's plan because , well , a group of seven people is enough to contribute into forging the x-blade .

If they bring less , it means that they cannot fight him ,allowing Xehanort and the Org.XIII to go after the PoH .

I also think that the GoL are special keyblade wielding people which means that Donald , Goofy and company cannot help a lot (someone needs to correct me on that though 'cause I'm not sure ).

I doubt it's so cut-and-dry.

Nomura (in an Ultimania interview): "In this game, Master Xehanort does not appear in the form of Terra-Xehanort when he transferred his heart, but as the old man he was before he took control of Terra's body. During the revival, what happened to Terra's body, and Terra's heart that was in opposition to Xehanort's control? In Kingdom Hearts, Birth by Sleep, it is to be considered that it was thought the whereabouts of the heart of Terra's master, Eraqus rested within his body."
