I Don't Understand This Generation

Posted

Seriously, we're in the next generation of gaming and all people want are ports of games they've played before on a previous console to the newest console. Shouldn't we be asking for COMPLETELY NEW GAMES instead of all these ports? I mean sure that the game will look a bit better graphically but I think that these game companies should take a break on all these ports. Especially companies that makes ports a year after the original version of said game recently got released and is still very easy to get a hold of (looking at you Naughty Dog and Capcom). There's a reason people have been calling the PS4 the "Portstation 4" because the majority of its library are nothing but ports f games we already played. I mean geez, at least when all this stuff with ports started it actually made sense because companies ported games that were pretty hard to find nowadays like Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, ect. But now this porting stuff is starting to get a little crazy imo.

Are there any studios doing their ports internally? I only know of one.

Unless you're stupid and make your own studio do the ports it does not affect development of new games.

Yes, because EVERYONE in this generation only wants ports.

Also, you can't expect everyone to have every console.

Too many ports of games that don't need it and not enough of ones that do. I get what you're saying about ports getting crazy, but some ports in particular would still be awesome to see.

Examples please.

The "Portstation 4"? Do people seriously say that? Huh, guess I never knew about it cause I'm one of those fans who want the ports, lol! xD

Seriously though, I think by this point ports of anything is welcome, considering how most of the consoles that ran those games are very hard to get or inferior by comparison, or for the sake of affordability and if you decided to spend all your money on a the newest system, you're not going to waste your time getting an older system now are you? I'd love to be that old school fan and have a Sega Genesis of my own so I can have an "authentic" experience playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog, but there's no reason for me to do that if I already have a digital version of it on my PS3, especially if it has a bunch of additional features to it (it doesn't, but this takes place in the world where Sega does what we actually want for once and ports the iOS version to PS3). The only reason most people want ports is either because it would make the game more available to most people or it would just improve the experience. It's not some kind of video game equivalent of Hollywood's Remak-itus syndrome.

Also, we'll never understand the younger generation, we were never built to. Just let them have their own thing while we try to stay hip with our own, lol.

People would rather play something they're certain is good because they've already played it than spend money on something they've never seen before

While there are bad examples of Ports, such as The Last of Us: Remastered, less than a year after the initial release, the vast majority of Ports are done well, long enough after the original(s) to actually make a difference and they're quite convenient for those who don't want to buy older consoles before the 360 and PS3.

It also helps that most companies with intelligence and a Brain Stem tend to outsource Port/Remaster Development to other companies, usually those who know what they're doing, so that Newer Video Game Development isn't stunted. (However, Square Enix messed up by having the Osaka/KH3 Team make the Remixes, even though they were good and helped out with those who were a bit clueless as to what was happening.)

Also: "Everyone" in this Generation and "Portstation 4". Generalization, Stereotyping and such nicknames aren't fact or argument-helping. I want new games just as much as the next guy and I'm part of the "Youth", so to speak.

we ARE getting ports and remasters for previous games and new games for certain gaming series so I don't see how this is a big deal...

there are new games coming out. it's just that they're all getting delayed to 2016 har

ports are good for keeping certain games relevant and allowing new gamers to experience old classics. i don't think they're all that bad. i mean the REmake Remaster sold exceptionally well and I'm fairly sure it's what convinced Capcom to take a stab at a RE2 remake. So there's that.

Handheld to console ports also broaden the audience. Gravity Rush, a game I enjoyed on the Vita, is now being remastered for PS4 which will give it the chance to be played by a larger audience which a good thing for the series. More exposure.

i think most people ask for ports just because they either want to see a game they really enjoyed be kept relevant or they don't want to keep 3 consoles lying around just to play certain games.

i will say that remasters can get abused by developers in an attempt to make a quick buck, see "Silent Hill HD" collection.

A thing talking about your very concern.

The short answer is that these days, games are freakin' expensive to make. It's a greater gamble to make something new from scratch than it was before, and I guess in a business sense they think it's better to play it safe with things like ports, remakes, etc., because they already know those games will sell. Of course, I wish they'd be more willing to take risks (the stagnation is the main reason I've stopped paying attention to modern games, aside from a somewhat lack of interest), but I can at least understand why things are the way they are.

Yeah, and some ports are nice. but this generation with ports is getting a bit out of hand imo. I like ports as much as the next guy but we need more new games than old games we've played before.

True but I honestly hate how game companies makes a port a year after the original version of said game gets released. Like what Capcom did with RE: R and Naughty Dog with TLOU.  I wish these companies would take it easy with these ports.

Tails, as I keep saying these ports do not affect development of new games unless your name is KH3.

What do you mean?

What do you mean?

Most ports are outsourced. So they do not affect development of new games. If you didn't have these ports you wouldn't have more new games.
