Do you prefer Anime Dubbed or Subbed and why?

Posted

Do you prefer watching anime with English Subtitles or with English Dubbed, with the English voice actors? And what is your reason for choosing the choice you have made?

I, personally like English Dubbed so I can watch what is going on while still understanding what the characters are saying. But I also like English Subbed since it gives me something to read. (Hahaha xD ) But in total, I don't mind either.

Rock on!

Very good question! (I'll aply this to Spanish)

One Piece is the only anime I've watched quite a lot both dubbed and subbed, and I prefer the dubbed version sometimes, and other times the subbed one! Right now I prefer the dubbed version, but that could change later as always xD

So I guess I'm like you, I don't mind either of them.

Always subbed ;)

In my opinon the Japanese voices are just PERFECT, and the voice actors do a splendid job!

Everytime I watch a dubbed version, I feel like they treat anime as a kids show, and I don't like that  :/

So yeah, I prefer the subbed

I would rather watching anime in Original Dub with English Sub. I don't mean that being dub is bad, but I prefer the original dub, since It's also can help me to learn language of the original dub (mostly I watch anime in Japanese). With the sub, It will be more better since not only I learn the language of original dub, but also I can understand what the original dub want(s) to say / explain.

Being dubbed is also good, Especially being dubbed in English, If It's being dubbed in English, I like to watch it without any subs (Either my mother language Indonesia or other sub). It's really help me to test myself how well I can follow English conversation and learn English better and better.

Usually I prefer English subbed anime. Although dubs are good as long as they keep the original dialogue and OST (including original OP and ED). Something 4Kids fails to do, which I totally understand why, but it still sucks for us older fans. :/

Peace!

I initially liked dubbed but since I saw naruto shippuden in Japanese, I noted how they add much more emotion to the characters in comparison to the English cast

This again...

Short and sweet: subbed unless the dub is actually good. (Dub examples such as Kill la Kill, DBZ.)

I generally prefer dubbed, but I'm not opposed to watching subbed if its the only option, or if it's too much of a hassle to find good quality streaming of the dubbed version.

I generally don't have a problem with the English voice acting, I can't say that I've ever watched something with a terrible dub (besides Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh maybe? I dunno what the general consensus on those are). They may not always be completely spot on, but good enough for me that I don't feel like I'm missing out. Plus, I personally find it easier to get into a show if I can understand the words being spoken without reading them.

Also, I know people are going to agree with me here, but... I honestly find a lot of Japanese voice acting to be obnoxious, mostly in how they voice female characters to either be way too cutesy (even when it's not a super cutesy show) or horrendously grating. Plus, even though many complain on how it feels like the same English voice actors are in everything, it's not that much different from how Japan has a bunch of different actors whom all fall into a handful of categories that sound the same. At least, that's how I see it. I'm sure many disagree.

Subbed.

Get episodes right away, so no waiting for a dub. I have gotten so used to Japanese voice actors that it just feels weird to watch a dub. Only dubbed anime I have ever watched is Ghost Stories and it's because the show was such crap that the company that made the dub was given full freedom on how to dub it and they made it quite comical. Just watch this, it's so stupid that it's good https://youtu.be/SxJ4VWoeOzs

It depends on the anime, some dubs are fantastic (YU YU Hakusho) but some aren't that good. Subbed isn't always fantastic either (Goku's voice in Japanese DBZ is atrocious, he sounds like he's on helium). I usually google what's better or seek advice (from Felixx usually) and that's how I decide.

Dubbed when I can, subbed when I can't.

The quality differences are so exaggerated nowadays it's ridiculous. There may be a voice or two that isn't up to par, but when the overall cast is great you can't let one ruin it for you.

Also, I just really don't like japanese voices all that much. I can tolerate them most of the time, but some are either way too exaggerated or high pitched for my taste. The exception being when you get great engrish like in JoJo.

Subs... I always prefer original voices, even when the dub is good. Besides, dubbing is not really a thing where I live and most movies/tv series I watch are in english, so I've just sort of gotten used to subs. It feels weird when I watch something in my native language and there aren't subs. xD

When you hear something in your native language a more emotional connection is established. So dubbed if Its available unless the voice completely doesn't fit the character like in code geass where his Japanese voice was deep and his English voice wasn't.

I think I like the English dub better than the Japanese dub, mainly because I'm grew up with pokemon, Sailor moon, Dragon ball z, digimon, Inuyasha, and sonic x.

It's a mixed bag. Sometimes the dubbed voices are terrible, but the subs can drive me nuts because they sometimes go away before I finish reading.

Usually I prefer English subbed anime. Although dubs are good as long as they keep the original dialogue and OST (including original OP and ED). Something 4Kids fails to do, which I totally understand why, but it still sucks for us older fans. :/

Peace!

Pretty much this, 'cept I prefer dubbed mostly.

Also, if the VAs are pretty bad(Freeza and Gohan's in FUNi pre-kai, sound like they are smoking for 30 years) or get to do terrible voice not by their choice(All these accents of 4kids dubs. I don't want to know how I sound like there...)

Usually Dub unless if it's unbearably horrible or there's only sub

Wow, I'm surprised a lot of people here aren't completely bashing dubs, which is a good thing.  I've seen so many people whine about anime dubs that it gets real old real quick, so I'm happy there aren't any of these types of people here. :)

Anyway, like most of the others here are saying, it just really depends on the anime and where to find it.  Its usually easiers to find subs, not to mention they come out quicker, so I usually watch that.  However, when my friend comes over, we usually watch dubs because she has dyslexia and that way we don't have to pause every other second so she can read what they're saying.  So, I don't really mind dubs or subs.

Also, I know people are going to agree with me here, but... I honestly find a lot of Japanese voice acting to be obnoxious, mostly in how they voice female characters to either be way too cutesy (even when it's not a super cutesy show) or horrendously grating. At least, that's how I see it. I'm sure many disagree.

Indeed, not all Japanese voice acting is good, and some people need to realize that.  I also can't stand a lot of the female voices for the exact reasons you listed; no its not cute, its annoying, so stop doing that for every other anime!  Plus, I don't understand how a lot of male characters have female voices.  Now, if its a young child or the male character is a trap, then I can understand, but a lot of male characters that have female voice actors don't fall into those categories, so its really off putting!

Well, for me, I prefer watching my anime Dubbed, because I like hearing the English voice actors, and some of them are all time favorites of mine, like Johnny Yong Bosch, Liam O'Brien, Troy Baker, Vic Mignogna, Bryce Papenbrook, Yuri Lowenthal, and many others! :3

But if there's no English version for an anime I want to watch, I don't mind watching it Subbed!

But there's one ironclad rule I made for myself that I always follow!  If I start an anime in English, I'll finish it in English, but if I start one in Japanese, I'll finish it in Japanese, ya know? :3
