Okay I know that this is mainly aimed towards the people that watched the old live action show of Batman & Robin but this just looks...so weird to me. I'm more used to Batman being strong, intimidating, and intelligent. Seeing this version of Batman again only in animated form in this day and age looks so weird to me.

 

 

 

 

What this is is the best Batman. The one that didn't pander to edgelords and try hards. The one that focused more on fun and less on brooding. The one that, frankly, was far more truthful to the comics than most people ever want to admit.

While the campy Batman is not my favorite interpretation, I wouldn't call it weird. After all, Adam West was the first real live-action Batman. (not counting the old serials)

What is this? A one-off movie meant to be a love letter to the fans of the 60s show. I really don't get why some are up in arms about this, it's not as if Batman has always been dark and brooding...

People are so used to the gritty interpretations that they forgot that Batman is a pop icon that can be spun in many different directions, similar to something like Transformers or Ninja Turtles. The Silver Age/Adam West incarnation of Batman, as ridiculous as it is, is no different, and has it's own merits as well.

Yikes. I hate edgelords as much as the next guy, but as I just said, it's a property that can be more than one thing. Besides, you can't deny the notoriety and the legitimate artistry we've gotten from dark Batman like the Tim Burton films, Batman: The Animated Series, and the Arkham games.

Adam West is in fact best Batman, and was honestly way cooler than the Batman comics of the time (most 60's Batman comics were Batman and Robin getting the shit kicked out of them by the random villain of the month until either the villain died of Batman just decided to catch them).

 

That said, still do love badass Batman. Not every interpretation if full-on grimdark, y'know.

I just want something that gets off of the dark n' gritty train for a bit.

You do realize his backstory is still seeing Zoro with his parents and then they're murdered in an ally by some random criminal and Bruce dedicates the rest of his life towards seeking justice against those who pray against the innocent, all while dressed up in a costume that's meant to intimidate and spook bad guys with how dark and creepy it is supposed to looks, right? Because literally nothing about that was different back then, the only thing that has changed is just in how the adventures are depicted, and honestly how they are depicted from the 80's to today feels like a much more likely series of progression from such a backstory rather than "I will fight crime with witty catchphrases and use bat shark repellent" and all that.

 

I'm not saying it's not an enjoyable style to enjoy the series in. It is where things started and if not for that we wouldn't have the darker stuff the most people like today. There's a certain ironic charm that the more goofy golden age days had. But you got to understand that that was just how things were back then, and now a days we have a different tone with all of the comics, beyond just Batman. It's not necessarily a bad thing that things are darker and grittier these days, it all really just depends on your tastes. I will say though, a little balance never hurt anyone. If anything, the 90's animated Batman series is probably one of the best depictions of Batman in my opinion, combining a good deal of the Burton-esque drama, darkness, and tragedy of the Dark Knight, while at the same time not being one to shy away from having some occasionally goofy and even campy moments, usually portrayed in the form of it's villains (though even Batman doesn't shy away from chuckling every once in a while). You can have both dark and gritty AND goofy and lightheartedness, you just gotta use both of them well.

 

I will admit though, we are kind of having an opposite problem to the Golden age these days, where we're putting more value and focus on the dark and heavy atmosphere of comic based movies rather than trying to have a more balanced amount of darkness and goofiness, at least from the DC end of things anyway. It'd be real nice to find that middle ground again, like how Marvel seems to be doing.

Yeah but I don't believe in that kind of "balancing". It's just trying to make up for one extreme with another, which means that there will be people wanting to see more dark stuff again to make up for that. I'd rather we just go straight to having a balance of both already rather than trying to out-do each other.

We can still have a balance in the sense we can have both campy and dark Batman. It's like how we can have the TMNT Nicktoon while also having the new TMNT film series, or how the new Power Ranger reboot film is coming out while the newest Power Ranger season in Dino Charge is still airing. It's not about competition between different ideas, its about giving options.
