SE director of technology: Kingdom Hearts III utilizes Crystal Tools

FFDream.com have conducted an interview with Julien Merceron, the worldwide director of technology within Square Enix. The majority of this interview discusses their new "Luminous Engine", which was previewed at E3 2012, however, the interviewer asked about Kingdom Hearts III and if it will use the Luminous Engine, and Julien gave his answer.

It seems to suggest that some work has already been done with Kingdom Hearts on the Crystal Tools engine (the engine that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is built on), however, it could just mean that this is still in the planning stages, or it could simply be Julien's opinion. We'll let you draw your own conclusion from the interview extract below, which was translated from French to English by TheApprenticeofKingMickey from KH13.

FFDream: We presume, of course that this technology will be put to use in future productions coming from Square Enix. Do you believe Tetsuya Nomura could perhaps make use of this technology in Kingdom Hearts III?

Julien: It's already evident that we're using Luminous Engine on various franchises other than just Final Fantasy. However, Crystal Tools, as I was talking about earlier, is employed exclusively on Final Fantasy, only for now. Since the next Dragon Quest X uses Crystal Tools, as well as internal projects such as Kingdom Hearts which also utilize Crystal Tools, it's evident that Luminous Engine will cover a large spectrum of gaming franchises and I hope it will be taken advantage of by other teams, but we still have a lot of work to do.

Update: FFDream have done their own English translation of the interview, and this alternate translation can be read below.

FFDream: We imagine that this technology will be used for the next Square Enix productions. Do you think that Tetsuya Nomura could use it for the next Kingdom Hearts III?

Julien Merceron: We will use the Luminous Engine for a lot of games, not only Final Fantasy. By the way, currently, Final Fantasy uses the Crystal Tools, but also the news Dragon Quest X and other projects such as Kingdom Hearts. Luminous Engine will thus be used for a large range of games and, I hope, by a lot of teams, but we still have a lot of work to do.

tutti frutti. I just hope that it doesn't take half of the human lifespan to make KH3, unlike a certain Final Fantasy game we know. But that aside, that's pretty interesting that KH3 will be given the same engine as Versus. For the most part, that gives me a slightly higher expectations for KH3 with gameplay, graphics, etc.

I don't think it means anything he just said that they will be useing it on future Kingdom Hearts games it dosen't seem he said that they are using it on a Kingdom Hearts game right now, either way can't wait to hear more about this

Crystal Tools...it's going to create some great things, whether it's paired with Luminous in some way or not during KH3 's development, in my opinion. :)

People DO realize this means that KH3 CAN be for Wii U right?

If by the time Versus is done, the PS4 is already launched,or anounced,Nomura will probably put the game on the Nintendo Console.

No "dead" console will get a game this great(and I mean in magnitude not in awesomeness),and Since DQ10 uses the same engine might as well, makes sense right?

If any sony fan get's butthurt,go....die I don't care,I am a KH fan,not a "insert console here" fan,and in my book, that makes me better then any console fanboy.

Final Fantasy XIII Versus is being developed by "The Kingdom Hearts Team" so it would make perfect sense for them to use the same engine.

Either way I'm sure Kingdom Hearts III will become the first Kingdom Hearts game worthy of a 9.0.

What is a Crystal Tool?

What is a Crystal Tool?

It's the engine that FF13, 13-2 and 14 were made on. Oh and of course Versus is being developed on it as well.

Dragon Quest X is being released soon in Japan so it's practically finished and you know..... Different teams work on different games so DQ and FF have nothing to do with KH3's development. Well besides Versus that is.

I'm tired of the new Final Fantasy games, I just want KH.

This is fantastic. Possible graphical improvement of KH? Sounds good to me :)

Final Fantasy is better and bigger than Kingdom Hearts. You can't expect them to stop a game when it's finally nearly completion. You can wait. It's just a video game.

As a Kingdom Hearts fan I want KH to be on a popular console. Like 2 games were produced on an outdated (and frankly pathetically weak) handheld (the DS) it is entirely possible Nomura will make the game for the current gen. For evidence, see God of War 2 which was released on PS2 even though the PS3 was out. Nomura wants money, so he would port it back to PS3 even IF he chooses the Wii U as the primary console. Really, this is just awesome to suggest. The Wii U is getting ports from PS3/X360 games so why can't the same thing happen in reverse? And, yes, I'm butthurt.

They would NEVER make it for a different console. They will develop it for the relevant PS console.

Not to blow everyone expectations or anything, but I don't think Mr. Merceron is referring to Kingdom Hearts III. I have suspicions as well as sources that say that he could be talking about Kingdom Hearts game in general, that a fan might have given Square a entire KH game, down to the voice actors and the game engine, which was the Crystal Tools engine.

Plus, the Kingdom Hearts Team is working on FFVersusXIII. Why would they stop all of the sudden and start working on KH3?

Oh, and I'm that fan that sent the game idea to Square. I have the letter to prove it.

And maki it on a console that can't sell it's own exclusives? Yeah,I do think the PS3 will be the one,but it CAN go to the Wii U,and don't worry, you can NOT play, since only a Fanboy would call a Nintendo console irrelevant.

(edited)

It might be made on technology more advanced crystal tool because I guarantee that the game will come on the generation of PS4/Xbox 720.

Happy to hear that Kingdom Hearts 3 will be on PS3! A big fan of the KH graphics and now finally I'll get to see them on a bigger screen! I wanna be a voice over for one of the characters!
