If you're on about Lucid dreaming there's several techniques but none are guaranteed to work. You can also get old hag syndrome with it, which isn't fun.

Old Hag Syndrome? Haven't heard of it, but lucid dreaming requires training. But oh my god, once you get it perfected... well depending on what dreams you want you'll either never want to wake up or you're going to need an extra pair of pants right next to you

In the olden days, when they believed in spirits, people claimed to have seen the ghost of an old woman sitting on their chest strangling them, which caused the suffocating sensation.
