Sam’s Unwarranted Disney Opinions Ed. Who Cares: Ducktales

I’ve been thinking this over for a long time and I’ve come to the conclusion that I like the original DuckTales more than the remake.

This isn’t to imply the remake is any less good; the characters, world, and plot are in a league of their own. However, there’s a couple things the original has that trumps it, in my opinion.

1. The Adventures
For everything the remake does right, I feel like it often focuses more on the characters and the drama between them than the actual adventures they go on—ironically enough. Maybe it’s just the inherent benefit of having more seasons to work with, but the original is way more interesting in terms of what actually happens in a given episode. Much more variety and still room for character depth and development.

2. Scrooge himself
The original Scrooge McDuck is someone I’ve always upheld as a role model. He’s the richest man in the world, and how did he get there? “Being smarter than the smarties, tougher than the toughies, and making it square”. That’s the kind of motto that gets me out of bed in the morning and makes me want to strive for excellence. Scrooge started out with only a dime to his name. If he can make it, so can I! Sure he’s cheap and sometimes insensitive but everyone has their flaws.

The remake seems to exaggerate these flaws and dial them up to eleven! Yeah I know that makes for better storytelling, but is that really who Scrooge is?

One thing I think is so interesting is how Jack went from wearing the Queenslayer’s Thorn to, White Vestment. It’s cool to think about how the Project QUEEN affected him so much, he’s focused on, almost always, attacking in close quarters.

It also might be because he’s a bit of a glass canon, so he needs the extra protection.
