Ni No Kuni: Wreath of the White Witch

It’s a PS3 game but it’s available on most modern platforms and it’s a masterpiece. All the art and animation was done by Ghibli and it just oozes that Ghibli charm! The story revolves around a young boy trying to save his mother; whom he believes is dead because of him.

What stands out the most to me is the lore. It’s very extensive. Like to the point that they literally give you an in-game compendium to read through! It’s even required for a few side quests!

no no, the problem is that now it makes sense. when it was a game, the audience was smaller and you could get away with "it's because it's a game". but now it's going to have a wider audience, so they see the need to have it make sense, as though it's something that could happen in the real world.

Wasn't much of a game mechanic, you didn't put and take off the mask manually in any way. It was there for the story to just say "Ellie can't be affected by this", so Joel just puts the mask on himself whenever you enter an area like that.
