And the joke was executed pretty well.

Setup: Tom defends himself by batting objects away
Elaboration: Jerry gets him to take the “game” seriously by quick firing pitches
Punchline: Tom takes the game too seriously and needlessly dives for the “ball“

It’s a smartly written joke that I can easily see happening in the classics.
