Should marriage to more than one person be legal (otherwise known as polygamy)?

Posted

To me i think it is awkward since i don't "practice" this, but honestly it should be a free decision to the person and who they are affiliating with (Not including incest). Although since most people were raised in a one woman, one man household they would highly beg to differ with this argument. But what about the other side, meaning the people who have been raised in a two woman, one man home? I believe there points should be recognized also. Now i'm not saying people should be allowed to have 16 or 17 wives/husbands but maybe 3 or 4. I've recently watched "Sister Wives" and it has inspired me to speak out about it. I have discussed this issue with my mom who is a lawyer and she says that some of her clients who have been arrested get off without fine because judges don't consider this a high offense in Florida. Now there have been different cases where people have gotten 5 years (for what? I'm still confused) for committing the act of felony. Give me your opinions of whether America should scratch this off there list of crimes.

Personaly, I don't agree with it.

If other people want to do that, they can go for it. owo

If all the parties are consenting, I don't see why not.

i agree with that because it wouldn't be considered polygamy it would be called bigamy which is horrible.

Hell no! Sorry, but this is something I really can't stand. I have a pretty old fashioned sense when it comes to love and marriage, so this is just plain wrong to me. You should only marry one person and that person should be the one you love. (I am aware that people say they love all of their husbands/wives, but they should make a choice and not marry the so many people involved!)

If my 2 girlfriends are cool with it......engaged.

From a historical standpoint, you might be wondering where the shift even happened - when did having multiple wives become the unusual thing, because, back in the day, that was absolutely common? The truthful answer is: The shift never happened in region our history shows it happening in. Multiple wives are common in the Middle East and Africa and it just never stopped happening.

This is like asking why some animals mate for life and others change up every season. If you notice, people are like that, too - some of us stick to one partner, others never seem to settle down. Is it in our genetics? Humans from all different parts of the world have a different idea of what they deem to be natural - but because we've long since stopped thinking about ourselves as animals, no one's bothered to study the actual courtship habits of humans!

From the standpoint where states are supposed to consider people who married in other states to be in a valid marriage even after they move across state lines and live in another state, similar is the upholding of marriage of foreigners entering our country. What even happens when they have multiple wives and they want to move here? How does the paperwork even handle that? Probably not legally, that's for sure.

I'm of the opinion the world is overpopulated and going to hell in a handbasket. People should be together for romance, not sex (although sex is a great, fun experience) toward the purpose of having lots of children. I'm of the firm personal opinion that people should be allowed to do what they want: If that means being gay or lesbian, fine. If that means a guy with multiple wives or a woman with multiple husbands (why do we not hear of this?), fine. If that means you want to grow up and be a pornstar (o_O) and live on birth control, uh... okay, fine, that's none of my business. If that means a perfectly normal relationship, fine-fine. I don't personally believe people should have too many kids, but too many is an arbitrary factor. If they can financial support a happy household with five children - great! If they can't even support themselves, maybe they really shouldn't be having children.

My point is: People should do what they want if they're not hurting anybody else - because, generally speaking, they're probably just going to do it anyway, even illegally, especially when no one's getting hurt while its all part of a consensual situation. There is no need to tell them no when its not going to stop them and there's no harm in it. It's actually kind of discriminatory and... well... downright shallow to enforce conformity to senseless rules based on opinion. If you don't want to do something: Then don't do it yourself. Do you really have to put yourself into other people's business?

When in doubt: I side with the side that isn't meddling with the lives of strangers based on one's own personal preferences. Empathy people - use it.

Personally I've seen how it can go wrong (not my family, but really close to me), but I still think it's better than the guy going out to hump his secretary or whatever.

i totally agree

There is one thing that separates us from animals

Free Will

We can control ourselves, by refusing to practice polygamy we make use of our free will, by practicing it, we aren't much different than the animals.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

In the end, Its up to them if they ever want to do it or not. Sure its illegal, but they have a choice.

Then why not make cheating on your wife/husband illegal as well?

nope, not even, one word cheating!

I personally don't agree with it--the Bible says marriage is a special thing between one man and one woman.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I know others don't share it, especially people who partake in the practice of polygamy. If someone wants to be part of that and is happy, then that's their decision. Part of being American is having the ability to be able to make your own choices, and if that's what they want, then that's okay. I think as long as everyone is happy and it's a consensual decision, it's alright then.

Well, not really sure.

I've read about too many cults with polygamy to have a high opinion of it. I say no for me and I wouldn't suggest it for others. Ever notice how most of it is multiple wives and not multiple husbands? It's very degrading to women in my view.

Hmm... no, that's disgusting.

However, if legalized, cheating could become a thing of the past...

Cheating is disgusting because you don't know that ur man/woman is having intercourse with another person. But when you openly know that you're in a relationship with various people it's your fault

Personally, I'm not sure. I come from a conservative republican family, but I'm not sure. I think gays should have rights but I'm not sure about being married to one then more spouse. Like, what if they just marry other people for sex? Not that I'm saying it doesn't happen already, but what if it's with all of someone's husbands or wives? That just seems worse to me. But I'm still not 100% sure.

Eh, if it makes some people happy, why not?
