I have noticed this for a while and never thought anything if this till i saw the box artwork for the game kingdom hearts dream drop distance why does riku have a dream eater symbol on his back i know we don't know yet or have any clue why, but just wanted to know what are your ideals for why he would have the symbol on his back. It reminds me of the time when he had the heartless symbol on his chest in kh 1

Maybe Riku saves the world while Sora is busy with his heart problems.

It could be connected with the fact that he's rising while Sora is falling...i don't know, I'm sick with anticipation!

This isn't just the boxart....he has it in the game, too. I'm surprised you haven't noticed by now.

I've wondered that too, and the fact that it's a Spirit symbol and not a Nightmare. Perhaps Sora has a Nightmare symbol on his back but we don't see it because of his giant hood (glad to see Nomura realized his hood should be big enough to fit his hair). What the dramatic twist that would be ;)

^ That's a very interesting thought. o0

Besides the fact that Sora ganna fail the M.o.M that would be.

He's only going to fail the written exam.

Hahahaha!

I wonder about it too, I hope Riku rises in the M.o.M. I just think it is his time to shine.

I do think that there's not much of a significance there. It may be because the dream world made a change in their attire. It just happens Riku got the 'Spirit' symbol on his back for added 'coolness' :D

Also, I am quite sure he doesn't even know its there hahaha

Maybe...because.....the darkness is still inside him...at his dream....that's why we see Ansem the seeker of darkness ,too at the trailer.....hmmmm...:)

If that is true than why the spirit symbol and not the nightmare

i think it is because riku uses the spirits like power-ups (as i understand) he absorbs their power through the symbol

I asked this a long time ago and no one seemed to care, but what @Rikuva said makes sense. There's only one way to find out now: wait until the game releases, unfortunately...

I was thinking the same thing but in the trailer they show sora saying to himself that if you the mark of mastery test you will not return back to your own world and that's why sora is falling and mickey is trying to reach for his hand

You going by the picture but IDK maybe its true but they'll make it.

...........That suddenly made me hope for a topless scene. You know, so he can see the symbol on his back...and stuff. > >;

I don't think it means anything. Probably just adding variety in Riku's clothing.

Maybe Riku is actually a dream eater!

Hey, you know, that could actually make sense. Sora and Riku could probably be technically spirits, helping defeat the nightmares, seeing as they don't actually exist in the realm of sleep and are coming there just to help them out.
