He just keeps getting more and more passive and submissive with each game. I miss the Riku who actually had some fire to him.

Nowdays it's all 'darkness' this and 'atonement' that.

I miss classic Riku.

I prefer new Riku. He feels bad about the way he was and is doing everything he can to make up for that. Although I will admit that I don't really like the new haircut. It's grown on me, but I still prefer his Kingdom Hearts 2 hair.

KH1 Riku was a jealous whiner. Now he's more like Siegfried, if you play Soul Calibur. My stamp of approval! :P

So do I.

I agree and disagree.

From what pieces I've seen of DDD, he seems to be finding a happy medium.

This too.

THIS XDD Word for word :D

I like emotional tortured and brooding Riku! But I like much better he seems in DDD like not as much brooding

... I actually like Riku's haircut.

Don't kill me!

I see what you mean, but I like new Riku. He's cool.

In my opinion original KH Riku is the greatest enemy in any game I have ever played. I mean he fights his best friend for no real reason but to get stronger

Yes, KH1 Riku was a tough enemy.

'Character Development'

Riku starts off as an ambitious character with aspirations. His character development basically made him constantly whine about atonement, and never actually try to do anything, and instead rely on Sora.

That's devolution if you ask me.

It differs from person to person. In my eyes, he's clearly aware of his flaws and mistakes after shedding the over confidence he had in KHI. In fact, Sora is almost an inverse of this.

It's one thing to admit your mistakes, it's another thing to dwell on them.

I like the new Riku. He may seem passive to you but I think that it is showing how strong he actually is. Not everyone can handle the darkness like he did and stay away from his friends and watch over them when he needs their support.

I like the way Riku is developing as a chracter. He has learned from his mistakes in KH1 and is trying his best to find himself now, despite the darkness within his heart. I also love how his friendship with King Mickey is getting stronger. In the end I think Riku is a great character and Square Enix has done an excellent job writing him. As for Riku's hair, I think he can work it short or long. ;)

Choosing the road to dawn in itself shows his evolution not his devolvement. Learning and choosing a better path shows progress .Progress is good xD

The events of DDD prove this.

In Chain of Memories Riku still had a lot of KH1 in him. He really started to devolve after that.

kh1 riku was awesome.
As for the everything being about darkness now....

I didn't liked KH1 Riku, in fact I hated him, and that is what I miss the most in him. He was the only fictional character that I ever hated, especially after he takes back the keyblade from Sora in Hollow Bastion, and that made him a wonderful rival and enemy. But I do agree that he had a good development, I just don't like how now everything seems to be "Sora X Riku The friendship that saves the worlds" after all that happened with them in KH1, but I think forgiveness is a part of being the hero of the light like Sora

KH1 Riku had some of the best development in the series. We understand his motivations and his wants at the begining of the game, and see how they become corrupted and twisted as he goes further and further into Darkness. He goes from friendly and cocky to power hungry and arrogant, but the transition is seamless and understandable. Then, at the end, he finally understands where he went wrong, and the only way he can possibly forsee atoning for it is to lock himself away. It's a fitting penance, making him pay for his crimes while also being somewhat sad for the viewer who understands what he was thinking and where he want wrong.

Now, he's just a stock brooding JRPG character. Meh.

I somewhat dislike the new Riku.  He seems to have very little personality now, and--forgive me if I'm wrong--but they're trying to simply make him "just another protagonist."  They're making him too much like Sora, which I also find a little odd.  While he was sort of dark and cruel in KH1, I actually preferred him there.  He was very interesting, and not your typical villain.  His story and reasons for turning to the dark side were complex and interesting, built up mostly of his jealousy for Sora and his desire to escape his imprisonment on Destiny Islands.  Personally, I preferred Riku in Re:COM, since he was kind of in-between his two identities.  It's just now he's becoming such a flat character, which I find rather sad.  As Dave said:

I couldn't agree more.
