Is X-Play Prejudice Against Kingdom Hearts?

Posted

(Now, this is me rambling, hence why it is in the Random section...)

X-Play is a show on G4 that is all about bringing video game news and reviewing new games hot on the market (I use that term loosley because sometimes they're a few weeks or even months late to the party sometimes :P ).

Now, we, the KH fanbase (or gamers in general), know that X-Play is known to be very...uh... controversial to the rest of the gaming community, whether it'd be how they review games,or the antics they pull on their show to make it seem more entertaining.

I for one KNOW that these people are biased against Kingdom Hearts. Did you see the review for Re:Coded? Unbelievable. (I am aware that there is a thread on this site focusing on that, which i will comment on later)...

Plus, I caught them dissing the Keyblade, calling it a "goofy" weapon. I don't have a clip, but...I knew it was during a segment where they were talking about a Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer. (I'm not too butthurt or anything, but come on....)

So...Is there anyone out there that agrees with me? Or am I just rambling hardcore? Leave your thoughts below.

poor adam :(

I never really watch X-play for it's reviews and previews. Just loved how they bring funny content before they became serious

I've heard X-Play is biased against anime and JRPGs in general, and so being mainstream, KH and FF supposedly get the brunt of it. I haven't watched X-Play, so everything I say are just things I've heard, but part of the bias came from how we fans tended to jump down their throats about anything remotely negative they said about what we like. They could be intentionally being harsh just to piss off the fanboys.

Well, I HAVE seen the show, for many years now, and I have even seen the 2012 episodes. (In hindsight, it looks like they're being nicer than they've ever been. Imagine that...) And while getting back at fanboys sounds justifiable...let's remember that even though they have opinions, they shouldn't necessarily take everything that the "fanboys" or "haters" say so heavily. (How do you think the WWE keeps on trucking?) I mean, their jobs are to present news on the gaming world and to review new games for the audience...and apparently they also want to be the SNL of the gaming community, but anyways, my point is this: reviewers should not put their own opinions over the very facts of what a game brings to the table. They gave Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded a 3/5, not really a bad score. However, they DID show that they have some annoyance over the game base on their own thoughts, which is why I'm pissed off about it.

Seriously, what good is it review games if you slander everything you don't like. A good reviewer should be optimistic about every little thing a game, polished or crappy, brings to the table. If it's good, it's because it does everything to sets out to do well, based on its gameplay, graphics, story, etc. If its crap...that means the tools that went into the game were not developed properly and thus results in bad quality. Simple logic.

To be honest I didnt really dis agree with the review.

tutti frutti. I never really took the reviews of X-Play seriously. I usually ask other gamers around me about games that catch my interest and in turn decide for myself whether or not the game/series is worth having. Though I didn't know Adam Sessler left/got fired, though it's been a while since I have watched the show myself. Though to me, X-Play has always been a bit biased towards the KH franchise in general. Just because Re:Coded isn't KH3, doesn't necessarily mean that either game will be good or bad, that is up for the gamers to decide.

Kingdom Hearts has many horribly flawed and almost laughably bad aspects to it. It's a game series that you can't take seriously if you want to enjoy it.

Critics always take things seriously, hence why they bash a lot of good games.

Also, critics don't take time to really get into a game. They only play enough into a game to be able to make some comments on it. Longer story driven games occasionally receive bad marks because the reviewer simply did not put in the time required to appreciate the game.

Finally, many reviewers are paid to give good reviews (I'm looking at you IGN) so if they don't get paid to give a good review, they won't be reluctant to give a bad one.

Oh yeah,,,,back when they were nicer...

But....what the hell, Adam?! Haley Joel Osment's voice acting as Sora isn't bad! It's good, I mean--uh--well, who am I kidding? The English VA's aren't very polished really...

They sound great in DDD, though! :)

I actually thought that KH had great English voice actors. Jesse McCartney did very good as Roxas and Ventus and Haley Joel Osment exceeded everyone's expectations with Vanitas. Also, Christopher Lee as Ansem the Wise and DiZ was a perfect match.

Though to be perfectly honest, Sora's voice pisses me off so much at some parts, especially when he tries to say something deep and meaningful and not act like an idiot.

Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a 100 percent objective review. We all have our tastes and opinions and no matter what, some of that will leak into our reports. Lots of peole don't like JRPGs. I don't care for first-person shooters. That doesn't necessarily mean the games are bad, but X-Play's job is to review games across the whole spectrum, regardless of whether they enjoy a certain genre.

If you don't like something, it's difficult to be optimistic and try to look at the good points. The things the game brings to the plate--the facts, essentially--can very well be what they dislike, and with all the fanboys attacking them, X-Play shifted their tune to "All JRPGs suck, especially Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts."

But yeah, they could've at least made an attempt to be objective, but hey, overly negative reviews draws in the viewers, and viewers=money.

Oh money....

I seem to remember, back when KH2 came out, that Xplay was very positive about it. Of course, I haven't watched a very long time, so who knows. I did know that they weren't wild about Final Fantasy, either.

But, you know what? If you think something has issues and problems, and you have evidence to back it up, then say it. A review is not obligated to be positive, nor is it necessarily obligated to be unbiased. It is giving a train of thought which people may or may not sympathize with when looking at a product, and permitting another way of looking at things. It doesn't necessarily mean that they're not giving the topic fair treatment: I love Kingdom Hearts, but I really, really don't care for Birth By Sleep's story, and can back it up with a great many legitimate arguments which can't be ignored just because people don't want to hear it. It's all just a different way of thinking.

I AGREE!!!! THE KEYBLADE IS NOT A GOOFY WEAPON!!!!!!!

Well, I think the number one problem with the English voice actors is that they deliver...but....they seem REALLY unenthusiastic at times.

True, all of the English voice actors for the main characters are at the lowpoint in their career.

Goodbye X-Play....goodbye G4TV....you biased motherf**kers....

Yeah, here we go.

Actually, I greatly disliked that preview. While I myself agree with 3/5 for other reasons, I don't like the reasons he gave.
  • He hardly touched upon the gameplay, the most crucial aspect of the game.
  • I'd say BBS was a main game of the series.
  • He didn't actually talk about the game itself until about 1:30 worth of dissing the concept of the game (complaining about KH3 and the replaying of old worlds)
  • He counts a remake of a phone game as a bad thing. It's just changing market, and it's not much like its previous game. It's like saying Type-0 was awful because it was a phone game.
  • He didn't seem to understand the story. "Amnesiac Sora"? Hello, this is Data-Sora and the game explains why they shouldn't go into the Data-World.
I'm not a big fan of Re:coded for the story, but the gameplay is enough to bring it back. It's not perfected like the others in the series, but it works.
