What were Riku's motives in KH1?

Posted

Besides wanting to save Kairi, what were Riku's motives in KH1? I mean, Riku put Sora through a lot of crap in KH1, but for what reason? Was he jealous? Did he believe that Sora replaced him?

On another note, I find it weird when Sora meets Riku at the end of KH1 after defeating Ansem, Sora isn't all angry at Riku/ Riku doesn't apologize or anything like that. It was like nothing even happened between them. Am I the only one who finds this so odd?

Everything started because he wanted to see the outside world.  He turned his attention to saving Kairi after she gets comatose, and most everything he did in KH1 was an effort to save her and paying for the methods he used to save her (i.e. turning to darkness and endangering people).  He fought with Sora because Maleficent tricked him into thinking Sora has new friends, and he was in the way of Maleficent's schemes which, to Riku's knowledge, would help save Kairi.  Him getting so close to darkness made his heart weaker and also made him more willing to do not-so-nice things.  So yeah, it was partly from jealousy, but mainly from him going about things the wrong way.

I didn't think it was weird because the last time they met, Riku was possessed by Ansem and wasn't in control of himself anymore.  By the time they reunite at the end of KH1, there wasn't enough time to talk given the situation, and Sora isn't the kind of guy to hold grudges, anyway.

I just find it strange that Riku believes Maleficent over Sora, who he's been best friends with for many, many years.

Riku had his doubts, but remember that Riku's jealousy and closeness with darkness made him more susceptible to Maleficent's lies and his own doubts.  Also keep in mind Riku saw what he figured was evidence to Maleficent's claims: Sora running around with Donald and Goofy, traveling worlds and having a blast and seemingly not giving as much a crap about the Kairi search as Riku.  He was jealous over Sora's keyblade/hero status, and had ambition but not the wisdom to properly act upon it.  Riku's used to being on top, and seeing Sora being the (supposed) keyblade master, combined with Maleficent's claims and his usage of darkness corrupting his heart... yeah.  There's a reason Riku spends two+ games with guilt.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised that Sora didn't hold anything against Riku either.  But then again, that's Sora for you, and he never holds anyone accountable for ANYTHING.  (Even Ansem...sheesh).  As for Riku apologizing...  I think he was a bit sidetracked when he had the chance to.  I mean, they didn't see each other until the doors were closing, and I think they didn't really have enough time to hash out apologies.  I don't know if you've played Kingdom Hearts II, but he does apologize in that game when he meets with Sora again.

Riku seemed to have a few motives, but I think in general he just wanted to leave his island.  He'd always seemed partly jealous of Sora, yes, and I think that leaked out more than once.  Plus he was being influenced by darkness shortly after he met with Maleficent, so I wonder how much that played a role in his annoying/jealous behavior as well.

Saving Kairi was a pretty high priority for him, but proving that he was better than Sora was another.

This is the kid who also thinks that he could sail to other worlds on a make shift raft with supplies consisting of three fish, coconuts, mushrooms, and one bottle of water. KH1 Riku didn't always have the best judgment.

But for a more serious answer Dracozombie pretty much has it covered.

I laughed my ass off xD

I've played KH2, when did Riku apologize to Sora? Was it still when he had the look of Ansem, or when he got his body back?

I find it funny that Maleficent only mentions Donald and Goofy, when clearly there was Leon, Aerith, Yuffie, and Cid in that room Riku and Maleficent were looking into in Traverse Town.

In the very end, after Riku got his body back and they're trapped in the Realm of Darkness.

Or, at least I think that was when he'd said it...  Someone else might remember more accurately.  It's been about a year since I've played KH2.

Actually I think she said something along the lines of Sora having new companions, and that he doesn't care about Riku anymore.  I'm pretty sure she didn't directly say donald and goofy. It has been awhile since I played though.

Wow, I always knew that the raft bit was illogical, but I never thought about the supplies bit... They're all going to share one bottle of water?

Maybe he just wanted to get a twinkie or something. Being serious.

Yep, when Kairi sent Sora to get the supplies she only gave him one bottle. Since the raft thing was Riku's idea I assumed that he wrote the supplies list too but perhaps it was Kairi? Either way someone wrote that list and didn't check it twice since neither Riku, Sora, nor Kairi saw it strange.

Now that I think back on it, Kairi telling Sora not to get water from the ocean is even...*face/palm*

Well, we never saw them at school until the second game... They must not have known either common knowledge or basic math.

lol, blame the school system for lack of common sense? Sure, I'll buy that. xD

Although for game play purposes I can see why they did that. It'd be a long fetch quest if Sora had to go get like, twenty of everything.

I meant that they'd probably never been to school before despite being 14/15, but yeah, it would take ages if we had to get all the supplies that would really be needed. And of course, Kairi and Riku were apparently off getting supplies too. Maybe they got food and water also?

Hmmm, I thought you were kidding about the school thing. The way I look at it, it was either summer break at the time, or it's like with parents, you know/assume they're there, they just rarely get brought up. Even if they haven't to school and don't know basic math they should at least have the common sense to know that "one" of everything (minus the water) would go to them and that wouldn't be enough. But Sora obviously knows how to at least count to three so...

I think we're just meant to assume that there were more supplies involved but it just wasn't necessary to go into boring details about it. So yeah, I think we can assume that Kairi and Riku went to look for supplies too. From what I understand it was Riku who put the raft together himself after Sora got the supplies but wasn't actually mentioned in game either. Not from what I remember anyway.

i dont think they ever went to school, remember when in KH2 right after Sora wakes up, they meet the Twilight Town gang, they ask him if he has done the summer homework, and he is like "HOMEWORK?!..........."

He spent the last couple weeks (to his knowledge) jumping around the universe after his home got destroyed looking for his friends and trying save the universe, things like school and homework would be the last things on my mind if I were in his position. His reaction to me is more "why are these strangers asking me about something like that!?" then anything, then there's the question if the schools on DI even hand out summer homework. I can't remember but do they specifically ask if he did the summer homework? He could be surprised that people have to do homework during the summer, lol.

Simply put- Riku has a superiority complex. When Sora proved that he could do something well, anything at all, Riku got all "awwww heck no, you ain gon steel ma spotlight!" And then went crazy.

This is kind of a spoiler for Birth by Sleep, so...

In Birth by Sleep, Aqua cast a spell on Kairi that, in time of danger, would send her to someone that could protect her. So probably, when Maleficent and the Heartless invaded Radiant Garden, Kairi was sent to Sora and Riku and Destiny Island. They never directly stated that, but it seems like the logical way it happened.

They didn't get homework in Destiny Island. They just went to school and studied. Oh, I want to be in that school. Especially if the perks include having a Keyblade.

As for the raft... Is the ocean a link between worlds in Kingdom Hearts or what? However, their odds of arriving at another world could have been nothing compared to those of Kairi's bottled letter... It arrived at the Realm of Darkness. That's got to be a new record.

yes they specifically ask, and i know it would be the last thing on his mind, but, i just saw the only thing ever about Sora and school, so i tried to come to a conclusion, sue me

This reminds me of what Riku said to Sora at the end of KH2, "You know, I always figured I was better at stuff than you."

I wonder what Riku was implying.

Ansem Seeker of Darkness wanted to conduct an experiment to see if the PoH and Keyblades were connected so he booted her off RG and into the lanes between to see if her heart would lead her to someone with a Keyblade. Aqua had placed a spell on her though and that would lead her to someone who would protect her if she was in danger.

*shrugs*
