Missouri Looking to Tax Violent Video Games

Posted

Just watch the vid. As for my thoughts? Bullcrap. These guys are exploiting tragity in order to advance their political agenda and we as gamers should be appalled.

Gods forbid we actually BLAME THE PARENTS.

And if this happens we are more than likely going to see the same implemented in every state of the US unless we say something NOW.

I think this is a good idea. Take the political agenda out of it--really, this is good. It's unhealthy to sit and play games (whether they be violent or not) for hours on end. Raising the tax promotes less game playing, therefore healthier kids. Not to mention Missouri is infamous for obesity. They need this.

looks like excise tax is gonna come into play.

Which will accomplish what exactly?

Spurring out of a shooting to scapegoating. I disagree. Extremely so.

The policy is which as stated will snowball making games practically almost unaffordable. So any new games Like Kingdom Hearts Unless you pirate you will NEVER be able to play them.

There may be positives but in my honest opinion the cons FAR outweigh the pros.

You're saying it's better if kids spend their lives playing a cliché video game series rather than being forced to study or play outside and interact with real humans? I can't endorse a view that clouded. I'd be willing to give up video games if it meant that kids could actually do something other than play video games and ruin their lives. I've read about quite a few kids who flunk out of school simply because they were so enraptured in their games that they never did ANYTHING other than play.

And that's the kid's fault? Did THE PARENTS do anything to stop them? I'm going to wager no.

I do not endorse kids sitting on their ass playing games all day I ask for balance. You are on one extreme end of the spectrum and I'm on the other end. The point I'm making is the government shouldn't be taking over what is supposed to the THE PARENT'S job!

Blame the person and offer them help, don't put out some BS tax on games just to please these people who are against Video Games in every way, shape, or form.

if it's a little kid's are playing, then blame the parents...obviously they aren't doing their job as parents if they are allowing their kids to play M rated games.

And that's the kid's fault? Did THE PARENTS do anything to stop them? I'm going to wager no.

Calm down there. Anyway, yes, it is the kid's fault. The blame can be equally distributed between the parents and their child. As you said, yes the parent should stop them. But you can't place all the blame on the parents. They should realize, 'oh, hey, I should probably do something other than play video games all day.'

This isn't really the government (which is generally speaking in the national size). It's Missouri's state government. I'm not being extreme. I don't really care if kids play video games. The problem comes from overexposure, which this would fix in most cases. The Missouri state government can't make parents or kids stop playing games, so really, this is the only option they have. Granted, they should not be getting this out of the shootings as of late,  but still. What they're doing is going to piss people off, but it has an overall good impact. An example of something like this (as in, something angering people but helping the greater good) is actually the tax on people's paychecks. It's an emergency war tax that was put into effect by (I might be getting the president wrong--don't hold me to the name) Roosevelt. The tax isn't actually a law. The government could stop it at anytime, and Americans could have more money in their pocket. But they don't, because it's money the government is using. Economists estimate that most of it goes to national projects such as bridge building and road reparations. Yeah, it pisses people off that they can't get all of their money, but it actually does them a favor.

(Edit: for some reason in the first paragraph I typed "all the blame on the kids" instead of "on the parents". Haha fixed it now sorry.)

I don't agree with this. To me, video games are more than just video games. I can't explain it, but I connect with them, especially games like Kingdom Hearts. I grew up with them. The story and emotion are what catch me... Things movies can't do. You can't be in someones shoes in a movie. You can't fight along side people in the movies. Video Games are more than what they seem. At least too me. It's difficult to explain. They can't do this. They just can't.

Zelda Games......making kids rage since they were kids. Some puzzles are too difficult for kids to understand, much less figure out..... In Paper Mario Sticker Star there were unexpected FORCED Alternate exits....go in a puddle of poison that doesn't damage you, but to figure that out for the MAIN QUEST? TO PROGRESS IN THE GAME!? -.- -_- _ -_________________- WOW..... Your post....is beautiful.

Yes but the problem is laws that are passed on impulse or in a high state of emotion tend to do more harm than good. Look at the Patriot Act.

That's what I'm saying. Now isn't the time and blaming it on games only makes it worse.

I already agreed with you on that point. They shouldn't be doing this because of the shootings at all. But it doesn't change the fact that I believe it's actually going to help kids.

This would hurt the gaming industry and possibly put people out of jobs as few games would be bought.

Bad move. You gotta love Politicians.

 This man speaks the truth.

So, if sitting on a couch for a long period of time and lingering in front of a TV is something worthy of taxation...

...Do you suppose they'll start taxing football and the people who watch it?

Guess its time to move to Kansas

Any state where obese people make up the majority of the population has more to worry about than violent video games. It's also one of the poorest states in the country. Most people there would rather spend their money on something they actually need to get by.

I don't think anyone here could've said it better than you did.

It's a kid's and their parent's choice whether to be active or not. They shouldn't be taxed for it.

It's a kid's and their parent's choice whether to be active or not. They shouldn't be taxed for it.

It's also one's choice to murder. (extreme example but it gets the point across xD

The problem is you can't moderate people. Tax is really all they can try, and though it's not the best solution, at least it's something.

Most mainstream music promotes drug use and sex, are we going to tax that? Because kids listen to that too, right?

I'm tired of seeing people using video games as scapegoats when tragedy happens, and taxing it isn't going to solve this "problem" at all, because I'm sure if a parent is willing to buy their kid a rated M game, paying an extra $5.99 isn't really going to change anything.

I'm quite neutral about is this good or not, I'm okay with this as long as it doesn't spread.

But for me, video games are more than just entertainment, I bond with the characters and live emotions as if I was the one going through some tuff sh*t, and some video games actually teach basic values, games such as KH and FF.

As ive just heard in this video and from the comments above mine i there are some pros and some cons to this new law or whatnot. the pro side to this is that as some of you have mentioned will reduce obesity and i who lives in Missouri think it would be good to for many of the obese people who spend half of their day playing video games and go do some exercise. this tax will deter them from doing anything from buying games let alone playing them for awhile

the cons to this however a slightly inadequate. it is true that the majority of some Missourians are obese but what about the ones who arent? what about the ones who are regular healthy and fit gamers who play their video games and exercise daily? this will cause problems for them not allowing them to play games that they would usually just go to gamestop and buy right then and there. this would get let gamers to buy the games meaning the gamers wouldnt enjoy gaming as they used to nor would be able to buy the games they want and this seems unfair for those gamers who are healthy. also this would be bad for stores like gamestop  seeing as how they would not half the usual number of customers or even 75% of the usual customers they would either have to close they store up or go bankrupt if sales arent sufficient.

my final thing to say is nowadays it is mostly violent video games like assassins creed or MW3 or God of war that are being sold in most stores and in second rate comes the teen/everyone rated games. so of course if taxes were to be put on the violent video games the majority of sales would drop and this in turn would be bad for both the gamers and the store selling the games as i stated above. so in a way im for this tax where it cares for the wellbeing of people but i am also against being a fellow gamer myself and would not accept taxes for games that are already $60-$40 each. not to mention how the stores would be tricking us to buy the games for their own profit. i would just buy my game online thank you very much

And now ive come to another conclusion. what he states in his video is true. M is for 17 and older so technically if theyre obese or not its their own problem not ours. we as gamers dont care if someone doesnt care for his own personal health they should just take care of themselves. not only that why would a kid like say oh i dont know 12 play games rated M? where are his parents, at casinos?. i honestly now agree with this guy and totally am against this tax even if its just 1% or whatever.

Little 10 year old kid- " Mummy, Mummy I want this game " !

Mother " Grand... Theft... Auto.... R18. Okay, I'll hand this to your Father so it looks like he's buying it for himself okay little Jimmy ?

Jimmy " Yaaay "

Mother " Oh my ! Jimmy just kicked his Father in the kneecap ! Where did he learn this awful behaviour from ? I bet that it's that terrible video game " !

Mother " Grand Theft Auto made my son terribly violent ". " Video games should be banned " !  They are evil " ! " Burn them all " !

Yeah.  <_<
