EA says Gun Violence isn't linked to Video Games

Posted

EA's thoughts on Gun Violence being linked to Video Games. It one of the rare occasions where I agree with them.

"The game industry is a very mature, responsible industry, more so than you might otherwise imagine,” Riccitiello said. “First off, we're very confident in the quality of our content, and the lack of an actual, factual linkage to any of the actual violence that takes place in America or markets around the world. There's no doubt that we, like you, were stunned and horrified by the violence in Connecticut or Colorado or many other places over the years. But there's been an enormous amount of research done in the entertainment field about looking for linkages between entertainment content and actual violence, and they haven't found any."

"I could give you long stories about how people in Denmark, or the UK, or Ireland or Canada consume as much or more violent games and violent media as they do in the United States, and yet they have an infinitely smaller incidence of gun violence, but that's not really the point,” he continued. “The point is that direct studies that have been done, hundreds of millions of dollars of research that has been done has been unable to find a linkage because there isn't one."

What are you're thoughts about this?

Seems silly to blame gun violence on video games considering it's been around since before video games.

People are so desperate for answers when tragedies like Newtown happen that they will try to find some cause to blame it on so it makes sense . The truth is,some people are just firetrucked up in the head and didn't get the help they should've gotten long before such events occurred.

I have newfound respect for EA

noo dont blame the video games

Thank God for EA!

I wholeheartedly agree, although I hate EA, bunch of greedy pricks.

Videogames are absolutely nothing to do with it, unless there's something wrong with the person playing them. Then the little psychopath would probably get ideas.

I'd go into a rant about gun control but I'm really not in the mood for a debate right before I go to bed.

Pointless research is pointless.

My opinion is probably not going to be the majority, but honestly I think delving too deeply into any kind of violence at too young of an age has a great deal to do with gun violence.  I'm not only talking about video games, but violent movies as well.

The crime rate has raised considerably since the 1970's, but look at what's out there for kids now.  There WERE violent movies back in those days, but not at the availability as they are now.  And vivid, violent video games just didn't exist.  I believe it could distort a child's sense of right and wrong by playing violent (and I mean REALLY violent -- think Grand Theft Auto, not Assassin's Creed) video games and watching intensely violent movies.  I'm not trying to be a total freak on the matter, but I don't want to deny that this might be influencing children the wrong way.

I'm not saying this is the only reason for gun violence, but I don't want to deny it playing a role in it, either.

Millions of people play video games.

A handful turn into psychopaths.

So lets ban em and ruin the fun for everybody who isnt a psychopath.

This is the logic upon which the argument is based.

EA is absolutely correct here. There is no correlation between violence and video games.

If you ever were playing mortal kombat and then decided that it would be a good idea to rip someones spine out, then you already had some latent insanity.

Well, it seems that even EA says wise things every now and them.
