Nintendo Explains Why They Still Make Hardware

Posted

Nintendo of America senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta hasexplained exactly why Nintendo is still in the hardware business despite naysayers calls for the company to go third-party. Scibetta says that he believes that Nintendo consoles come to life when the software and the hardware work in harmony together.

“Nintendo systems come to life the best when the hardware and software work in perfect harmony. That’s why we’re still in the hardware business, because we think our hardware is the best way to bring software to life. It’s tuned perfectly for that. When Mario bounces from mushroom to mushroom, it feels so responsive because the software has been tuned especially for that hardware.”

Skyace(a member I talked with in the KH3 Wii U thread) is one of those

Is this really necessary?  They make hardware because it makes them money.  That's what everything boils down to in the end.

The day a Mario game or a Zelda game hits the Xbox One is the day I quit gaming entirely and say:F.UCK VIDEO GAMES

You shut up! I dont want to live in a world like that!

To be far GameCube and N64 were both failures and were both Nintendo fault for not getting with the times. Now their handhelds sales are great but if Wii u follows suit with NGC and N64 which it could easily do. Should they focus on handheld gaming over console gaming?

(N64 sold 33 million compares to PS1's 102 million and NGC sold less than 22 million to PS2 sold 155 million)

I can tell you right now wii u won't sell over 50 million units

Oh god, third party nintendo....get out of earth naysayers

Why would they go out of the hardware business? It's what they are best at! Put all of Nintendo's sales from the last two generations together and you have more hardware sold than Sony and Microsoft COMBINED. The 3DS is doing fantastic and the Wii U is doing better than anticipated.

Nintendo once saved the ENTIRE gaming industry from dying by making hardware, and they would kill it if they stopped.

Behold, the game that killed Atari, almost killed the gaming industry, but allowed Nintendo to rise to fame and fortune, -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial_(video_game)

Well, handhelds don't count in generations there their own thing so your fact is quite untrue

Gamecube (22milion) + Wii (100million) = 122 million

Ps2 (153 million) + PS3 ( 75 million) = 228 mllion

If you added Gba, ds and psp in there, Together Sony and Mic would have still out sold Nintendo.

Handhelds count in generations. They progress at the same rate as consoles do. But whether they do or do not is besides the point. Nintendo has been at the front of gaming hardware innovation for the past 20 years. They have no reason to stop making hardware and if they did the result would be disastrous not only for their company, but for the industry as a whole.

Third party Nintendo? Screw that. Imagine playing Mario on PS4. Zelda on Xbox One. Pokemon on Vita. Cool, right? NO. Nintendo puts amazing features in their systems. Features that enrich the gamer's experience, and make their games unique. For everyone who says it should, imagine your precious Sony/Microsoft first party games gone third party. Doesn't seem so cool anymore, does it? Keep in mind, anti-Nintendo trolls: Without Nintendo, there wouldn't be gaming. Interest in the market was lost after Atari crashed. Nintendo took the risk, and revolutionized the whole industry. People who want Nintendo to go third party are probably graphics-crazy trolls who only play bloody/gory games anyway. Nintendo's games are far from reality. That's why they're FUN. Sorry to rant, but honestly, these are the things that piss Nintendo fans like myself off.

Never said it wouldn't be but even with them, your fact about Nintendo out selling both Mic and Sony still remains untrue globally. As great as Nintendo is, they have made choices that don't evolve the game industry from N64 having cartridges to GameCube not playing actual disc, to their approach of online gaming compared to Sony and Mic. Nintendo might be older in gaming but their not more important to current gaming than Sony and Mic. It just depends at what you look at. Ps2 and Xbox changed gaming more than GameCube ever did. They bring different things to the table. But saying Nintendo is better company than Sony and Mic due to history is like saying sports team better than another sports team because they been around longer and are historically more important.

Despite they were failures there were commercial successful games for N64, and GCN which save Nintendo.

I'm not saying Nintendo is the better company. Sony and Microsoft contributed a lot to gaming. However it's really undeniable that when it comes to moving forward, Nintendo is in the lead. Sure they have had setbacks such as cartridges and not paying much attention to online gaming even to this day, but what they have contributed far outweigh any and all mistakes they have made.

Motion control was a mindless gimmick until the Wii came out. You could even say motion control was a scam until the Wii since all major attempts at motion control since then either didn't work or barely did (even the infamous Powerglove that Nintendo made earlier). Nintendo not only managed to make it work, but work in a way that would actually add to gameplay. Microsoft and Sony would both try to cash in on the motion control craze with the Kinect and Move respectively, and both are superior motion control devices in every way shape and form, but neither have had the impact that the Wii has had.

Then you have portable gaming, which of course existed in limited, and crappy forms until nintendo started making Gameboys and later the DS and 3DS. The only major competitor to Nintendo's hegemony of portable devices has been the PSP but the Vita is well, bad (mostly due to games being bad, the system itself is okay) and smartphones are still too limited to provide a true gaming experience. So now, Nintendo is leading the way with the 3DS which again, was absolutely broken concept until now. Hell, you could even make an argument that Nintendo was the first to perfect touch screen gaming with the original DS series.

Basically what I'm saying is that Nintendo takes stuff that's broken and gimmicky and turns it into something that can actually work and be quite spectacular. It involves a lot of risk taking and Nintendo has had A LOT of flops so don't get me wrong. But there is no other gaming company out there that actually tries new innovative things and SUCEEDS. While I love the Playstations and the Xboxes I feel their impact has been mainly bringing the innovations of PC gaming into the light. At the end of the day those two basically took the high end pricy gaming PCs and turned them into more affordable and user friendly packages in the form of gaming consoles. PC users were enjoying online gaming, disks, polygons and all that jazz YEARS before consoles got in on the action. The Playstation and Xbox really didn't innovate anything, they just made what was already innovated popular, which is an achievement in itself because without that popularity gaming would not be the massive industry that's making more money than movies and television networks now.

Metal Snake about Shadow the Hedgehog it selled very well on the Gamecube.

Yeah but it's negativity in the Sonic community is absolute....but not as much as 06

Metal Snake would hate me for this but Sonic 06 would have been successful on Wii like the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic Colors with less loading time, less glitches, less camera issues,new/altered cutscenes, and better mechanics.
