Pokémon Red Version and Blue Version were the first installments of the Pokémon series and first released in 1996. Since then, the franchise has sold more than 172 million units, making it the second best-selling video game franchise of all time – falling only behind Nintendo’s Mario series, which has surpassed 200 million units sold. The next installments of the main series of Pokémon games, Pokémon X and Y, will be released worldwide on October 12th for Nintendo 3DS.

Well that's quite an accomplishment!

I expect no less from Pokemon. I mean... COME ON. IT'S POKEMON.

pokemon x and y will make this the #1 best selling series

I thought COD was the best selling video game franchise.....thank god.

I knew number 1 would be Mario, but congrats to Pokemon.

It's sad seeing Mario #1 but at least it ain't CoD

Pfft. Mario's really ahead of Pokemon in sales? *sighs* Well, if most of those sales are from the RPG series and Paper Mario, then i can understand that, but if most of them are from the platforming ones, im gonna be shocked.

Heck yeah, my second favorite franchise is the second best selling game series. :D Congratulations Pokemon, you deserve it!

That'd be awesome if it took #1. It definitely seems more popular than Mario these days.

I know I've told you this before, but just because you don't like the platformers doesn't mean everyone else hates them. :/ A lot of people enjoy them, myself included. Sure, they're simple, but that's why a lot of people enjoy them. Anyone can pick them up and play them.

The numbers are a little off for Mario and Pokemon

But still those are some incredible sales.

Please remember that Mario was a huge game in the 80s. If you had a NES you had Mario Bros. simple as. The platforming games sell like hotcakes, with New Super Mario Bros selling 30 million units on the DS alone. If anything the RPG and Paper Mario series do not sell like hotcakes in comparison to the 2D or 3D Mario games.

I mean people who only care bout fps and think its the greatest thing ever and only care about if a game has blood etc.

Dude cut it out.

What's with you and Mario games,I don't mind that you don't like Mario,I'm fine with that.

But you can't downplay Mario's part in the industry

MARIO HAS SAVED THE GAMING INDUSTRY FROM CRASHING....IN FACT....EVERY SINGLE VIDEO GAME NOWADAYS CONSIDERED TO HAVE MARIO'S LEGACY IN THEM

Without Mario, you would've never played games like the Final Fantasy franchise, even Sonic wouldn't have existed if it wasn't for Mario

So please check your facts,I have no problem with you hating Mario, but insulting his part of saving the industry is an insult to gaming IMO

Heck, without Mario,we would never had things like Ps4 and XBone now

Mario games are spread on many genres:

Platforming

RPG

Racing

Party

Sports

....etc

Dude cut it out.

That's an amazing achievement ^_^ for one of my favorite video game franchises of all time....and it deserves it

If it wasn't for Pokemon,I would've never been introduced to the RPG genre.

My first RPGs were Pokemon Red,Pokemon Yellow and Pokemon Stadium.

If it wasn't for Pokemon I would've never known Kingdom Hearts to be honest

Heck yeah, my second favorite franchise is the second best selling game series. :D Congratulations Pokemon, you deserve it!

I guess. : But you're right. Who am i to make fun of the game and ruin it for people who like them. I guess they're just like that.

Really? I thought the RPG and PM series would sell better or at at least just as good as the Platformers. O.O Huh.

O_O Are you kidding me? MARIO SAVED THE GAME INDUSTRY? REALLY? *facepalm* God, i never thought people would love platformers like Mario enough to stop the game industry from crashing.

Huh. Ok, i have a newfound respect for Mario. Ill stop my bashing on it. But that still doesn't change the fact i dislike his platforming series due to it being the same exact thing every single time. Its old, and im tired of it. But im going to stop my bashing on it, only because he got a miracle to have so many people like his game which somehow saved the game industry. :

At least it not some fps that everyone just seems to love.

Call of Duty, Battlefield and Halo are always doing the same thing, but not all FPS suck Borderlands for example, that game is fun and funny

I guess. : But you're right. Who am i to make fun of the game and ruin it for people who like them. I guess they're just like that.

No I'm not kidding.

Go look it on youtube: History of Mario

or heck even on wikipedia you'll find it

We like Mario game not because he saved the industry, but because it's so simple and fun

And if you think Mario is the same thing always, you clearly never EVER played Super Mario 64,Super Mario Galaxy,Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi

Mario has games in almost every genre so there will be always a variety of Mario games outside of the platforming series.

Also,STOP GOING OFF TOPIC

This thread is about Pokemon, not about Mario

In the old days Mario wasn't old and the exact same thing every time. It was a game that kids played on their own or with their siblings (or if you had that super rich friend you'd play at theirs while weeping at the fact you didn't have one). The platforming games are Mario's staple franchise, he has branched out to every single genre out there (although no FPS yet xD) so at least there is some variety when it comes to Mario.

Mario platforming games do change though. In fact there is always something new with each game regardless of the same old jumping to the flag at the end of the level. If you don't like them then that is fine too, (I don't like the Final Fantasy 13 series which you love) but at least respect there are those who like them. I know the games can be a little bit repetitive in music and certain level design but man they are really fun (especially the multiplayer in recent games).

To be fair it does mention that Pokemon is second only behind Mario. I think that's what sparked it.

Nintendo saved the game industry, and they did that through the success of the NES and Super Mario Bros. That's why its their flagship series, after all. :P Also, there are quite a few Mario games which change things up. Look at Super Mario Galaxy, for example. That one wasn't anything like the standard platformer games.

There actually was a Mario FPS back on the SNES called Yoshi's Safari. :P

Pocket Monsters is a money maker.
