It's very hard to be an atheist in a religious family, especially if you live in the south like me where everyone's a motherf*ckin' bible thumper. I straight up told my parents a few months ago im an atheist and they have been making me go to church every sunday and my mother threatens to not let me participate in holidays anymore. So it's not the best option to tell them sometimes. Anyway, for those of you who haven't come out about it yet, I'm sure this will help.

I have nothing against Atheists, but honestly in just regards to my opinion I find it really hard to understand how someone can truly be atheist, but again that is me.

I could explain it if you want.

It's mostly just a matter of examining all of the proven scientific information that is given to you, comparing it to what you're taught about religion, and then saying religion does not have any logic behind it. But that is a very short explanation of how someone becomes an atheist.

I like the idea of religion but I just can't find something that I truly believe and am into. I'm not atheist and I do like learning about different religions but, right now I just don't belong to a set religion.

Then you're a deist. A deist is one who believes in a deity but does not belong to a religion.

. . .  I do not mind opinions, but dood... that was a cereal box answer, and not completely an "atheist" definition, some people examine proven scientific info and theories of plausible logic and it makes religion more logical. Although, most people I have met that are atheist do not know either "story" and just want to be indiecisive about life.Which do not get me wrong, some just "believe" into religion to not be labeled into animal and be nothing in the world.

trying to use religion to explain the nature world is silly and proven not to work

however

trying to use science to try to explain any type of existence outside the physical realm is just as flawed.

Then you're a deist. A deist is one who believes in a deity but does not belong to a religion.

No, I'm not. I don't believe in a deity. I'm still looking for something to believe in.

I said it was how someone becomes an atheist. There's no proof of a god, so I don't believe in one. Simple as that.

Well atheist literally means without religion.

Then you're a deist. A deist is one who believes in a deity but does not belong to a religion.

what the hell? A deist? It does not sound like she is a deist it sounds more like she does not know who god is, or who she is or who anyone really is. I respect that, it is the spirit and soul that is most important like that. I feel like it is much like starting a new RPG video game, you feel there are so much people have told you about it, you have read up on how to play and how others have played the game, but what it really comes down to it, it is who you decide to become is what religion is all about. do not look into names of religions and try them out, just explore spirituality and see what life is to you, and call it what you feel.

Well, science is proven and existence outside of the physical realm is not.

Bro i didn't make this thread to cause a problem I did it to help people out. Please stop bothering me about it.

No, I'm not. I don't believe in a deity. I'm still looking for something to believe in.

Then you're an agnostic? If you can't find something to "believe" in, why do you still bother? Better to live your life without caring about something that's not really going to matter in the long run.

Everyone can believe what they want to so long as it makes them happy :D Live and let live, yes? No problems here, everyone's cool.

I am just asking for you to get your facts in a line before giving them to someone else. It will not only hurt those who your words were given to, but you to.

What I am trying to say is we can not observe any type of heavan or afterlife due to our own subjective limitations ( unless we come up with a device that makes up speak with the dead)

without observation  we can not use the scientific method without scientific method we cannot study the afterlife.science is useless when your trying to use it to understand any type of deity or afterlife.

I don't give a hoot for labels but if you want to call me that then sure whatever I guess. As I said, I like the idea of religion. I like reading about it. It's got a lot to do with my own personal reasons :3 I already do live my life the way I want to, but I want to expand on the moral codes I choose to live by. It's just personal preference, not EVERYBODY needs a religion. I don't feel I need it, I just want it. :B Why bother? Well, why the hell not? I've got a lot of years ahead of me, mind as well find various ways to occupy my time :3

I do have facts. It took me several years of observing facts before I transitioned into agnostic, then atheist. I just didn't explain it well because I didn't want to get into an argument. Religion I think is just a way to comfort yourself about death and give you hope for an afterlife. Every culture has done it, and most have created their own religions for this reason. If there was in fact a truthful religion, there wouldn't be so many different ones.

I didn't make this thread to debate, just to help people -_-

Let's just all agree that religion is a lot like music. You may hate what I like, but nothing you do or say can make me feel otherwise! :)

uh huh. And I have my facts too my friend, where religion and science are the same thing. so yeah yeah yeah, I was born into Christian beliefs, then became skeptic, Atheist, then became spiritual and religious overall. I study facts, logic, gods, religious rituals, scientific rituals, humanistic rituals you name it. I will leave though I do not want to hurt anyone.

So...

Good luck everyone, and have a good day, life and such, let no one distract you from believing in what you want to believe, all I ask is to keep an open mind!

There are always spiritualists, those that believe in a god, but not specifically believing in a certain religion and its practices.

Its as simple as this: Those who don't believe in any deity whatsoever, and are absolutely sure of it, are atheists.

Science does get involved later on, but that isn't what atheism is. Atheism is a belief of no deity.

You can be a spiritualist/religious/etc. and still look to science for information.

Agnostics, however, don't really know whether there is a God or not. Different from atheists, who are absolutely sure. I am kind of like this, but then again I don't really care. If there is a God, cool, if there isn't, okay. I want to live my life the way I want to, without worrying about the afterlife. That can come later. My view is definitely subject to change as I get older.

Spiritualists are those who believe the fact there is someone higher up, a deity, but not inclined in religious ideas and practices like Christianity, Catholicism, Islam, Hinduism, and the rest.

Oh yeah come to think of it I didn't really delve that much into evolution and stuff until I was actually an atheist. Lol.

I think its pretty natural for people these days to try to incline themselves towards something they believe in, whether or not it has factual information. Since you gave up the whole religion thing due to the fact it was illogical (at least I think that was your reason?), its easy enough for you to look towards science since not only does it have evidence, it is also doing the same thing religion does, explain what's around us.

I'm agnostic, most of my direct family is atheist, and blah.

Yeah, that was the reason.
