Can people please just stop hating on FFVII so much?

Featured Replies

It wasn't failing, it looked quite nice for it's time and I personally thing the graphics are still quite unique and charming.

That's the trick, isn't it? It looked good then, but not now. We don;t live in 1997 anymore.

All I care is that ff9 is the best. But I don't even know why I am here.  .-.

Like the great Macho Man said "What it is. Is what it is."

I agree with literally every word of that, especially the Randy Savage part.

New hardware. It was one of the first fully 3D games of it's time, and probably the longest fully 3d of it's time as well. Bashing it for graphics is kind of silly in that regard.

Wait so you're saying that character development among multiple iterations is a flaw? Alrighty then.

FFVII's graphics were fairly primitive even for PS1 standards. The backgrounds and FMVs were fine, but the sprites? Eeek.

And Cloud's change in personality is hardly what I'd call character development. Nomura flat-out admitted he turned Cloud into an angsty loner who pushes away his friends in AC, rather than the strong and confident leader he grew into by the end of FFVII, because fans and doujinshi kept portraying him as an emo git. This definitely reflects his appearances in KH. It wasn't too bad in KH1, but come KH2 they're definitely using Complication!Cloud over FFVII!Cloud. And sadly, there's no going back.

Well he had character development in Crisis core at least.

I thought we were talking about the FFVII series though lol I don't remember KH being mentioned.

I said "future iterations" that's all encompassing. But no, even then, Advent Children's "Cloud" is definitely not the developed form of the character from FFVII. He's a regression at best

Even for its time FFVII looked astonishingly bad. The backgrounds were creative, but the technical ability tf the designers let everything down. Trying to discern what the characters are even doing when they wave around their grotesque club hands around is a game in itself

I think it looks good.

oh well I guess people need to stop complaining about it, someone thinks it's good!

Yeah like that time when

Either way, that shouldn't make people think it's a terrible game. I think FFVIII looks like shit but I don't let it change that I like the game.

why can't people not like a game for looking awful? Especially as awful as FFVII

Crisis Core is a prequel so it doesn't quite count. Besides, most of the scenes where he does shine in that game have been shown in the original FFVII. Crisis Core was really Zack's story, not Cloud's. Cloud was only there because he's FFVII's protagonist and he was a part of Zack's life.

You can't make that judgement call for people. If they don't like the graphics, people are allowed to dislike a game because of that. Plenty of people didn't like the art style in IX, even though that's a fantastic game, and that's fair. There are no rules anywhere that state what you can and can't judge games on. You can disagree with people's opinions, for sure, and you can even dismiss a person's opinion if you feel they're based on something minor or arbitrary, but those people are still allowed to have those opinions.

Okay so now lets get back to the main topic without any sort of relations with what just happened.

I don't know a lot of people hated FFVII, more people love it than hate it.

Guys let's not get off topic anymore and also please move on from any further controversial discussion .I deleted that part of the conversation to avoid anymore possible offensive posts. Touchy subjects never go down well here so please be respectful and move on.

honestly i love final fantasy games i don't necessarily hate any of them. 6 began what i believe was the golden age of rpgs. But american audiences got lazy and they changed the winning formula. I wish the days of the turn based story driven jrpg would return.

Because the gameplay is far too appealing to stay hung up over?

If you don't like how it looks, fine. Doesn't change how many other people love the game just as there are other people who don't like it. I personally think The Twin Snakes looked far better than the original Metal Gear Solid, doesn't mean that I think any less of the original.

And people's tastes in graphics shouldn't depend on what era we're in. If people are fond of 5th Gen graphics, that's no reason to think less of them. That's like if people who love 7th Gen graphics looked down on people who love 16 bit games from the 90's.

Why can't people not like a SNES game for looking flat and pixely, right?

well first off... this isn't a topic about being fine with people not liking the graphics, it's about saying that that's not a valid reason for someone to dislike something. The graphics aren't enough alone to make me dislike FF7, I'm just saying if it is then it's that person's right

Secnd, there's a very bg difference between old graphics adn good graphics. A lot of pixel art games have aged fantastically. It's all about using your resources effectively. Mega Man on the NES looks great, Zelda 1... not so much. Kirby 64 has aged remarkably well too, if you want a 3D example.

When you say something was good for its time, that implies it's bad now, and FF7 definitely looks bad now. The SNES Final Fantasys though? They've aged great, especially FFVI, which really took advantage of its limited sprite count

Similarly, FF8 and FF9 aged better than FF7, since they had better art direction and more talented modellers. But even then, I wouldn't sya they've aged -well- graphically

I'm not the first person talking here to have changed the original topic of this conversation, but whatever...

Anyway, I can say that I find that some games have appeared to have aged well, but that's still a matter of taste. My parents can say the same thing about their favorite pinot noir, but I would still think it tastes bad. Games like Zelda 1 are still considered classics and good games to many fans, even if they prefer other games more.

Something can be a classic and look terrible. graphics that aren't TOO bad won't stand in the way of good gameplay, they just won't enhance it

Everybody likes and dislikes different things for different reasons, that's why it's pretty ridiculous to make a thread telling people to stop hating something. It's pretty silly

I never hated Final Fantasy VII heck I gave it a pretty high score when I reviewed it early this year

I just hate the people that obsess over it and ruin the experience for everyone

People on both sides of that coin annoy me too.

On one hand, I don't like the ones who act like FF7 is the greatest thing since sliced Chocobread, and are constantly demanding a re-release on unrelated FF posts. It's especially annoying when they say that every FF since 7 was crap, which is not even remotely true. And as terrible as Square's screw-up was, it was a hilarious middle finger to those people.

On the other hand (and this applies to any game that is considered amazing, not just FF7), I hate the people who just play the "overrated" card and don't shut up about it. Like it's one thing to offer a legitimate explanation for why they don't like the game and what its flaws are, but to just hate on a popular game because it's popular, that's annoying.

Also, I quite like FF7. I think it's a very good game.

Maybe the way he sees it is that hating something doesn't bring good to anyone? I don't know if I can believe that or not, it's sort of like saying that this one medicine will work for everyone. Each person has to take it and see where they stand for themselves. It's just the people who lean one way or the other because the opinion is popular that tends to annoy me a little bit.

Anyway, yeah, this is probably getting out of hand. I say we should just drop it here.
