Who is the saddest/ most tragic character in KH?

Posted

Of all the characters, who is it to you?

I personally think its Roxas. He lived only long enough to become his own person, make friends and memories, then be forced to disappear. I do think that given enough time, he would've followed Xion and gone back willingly, but the fact that he was not only forced to, but also intended to not be told makes me tear up a bit. I hated that DiZ thought a blissful dream would make up for it. Could you imagine how scary a death that would've been? To think you were an ordinary boy, then be taken away and forced to what in your mind equated to die for no reason that you knew. I think if he had been told from the start that he wouldn't disappear but be whole, and given time he would've accepted and come to sora willingly. And to think that the only reason this didn't happen is because of DiZs impatience and hatred for nobodies and his apprentices made me hate him quite a bit. When he apologized to Roxas in KH2, I actually got a bit teary eyed. I flat out cried first time Roxas disappeared, and hated Sora for a bit of the first part of the game because I didn't really understand all the story yet and thought it was selfish to sacrifice Roxas to wake up. I don't think Sora would've wanted this either, do you? Wanted a life to end so he could keep living? It doesn't seem like Sora to do that.

But that's just me, who is it for you?

Since Roxas, Xion, and Namine are already covered, I'm gonna throw an odd one out here and say Terra.

Now granted, this is partially (okay, mostly) due to BBS's writing, but I have to feel for a guy whose earnest (and seemingly effectual) attempts to help others always backfire. Despite working as hard as his friends and being as good a person as them, his master refuses to grant him a prestigious title because of his darkness. He journeys alone to try to control it, and almost everyone he comes across is either shady or actively tries to dupe him. He has few true allies to help him out. Unlike other characters who at least get the occasional party member, Terra consistently needs to go at it alone. The only person who seems to support him on his little darkness-angst journey is Xehanort, who just manipulates him into becoming a vessel, which he is unequipped to resist. Now is body is a vessel for the bad guy and he can't do much except wait for someone to save him. All because he tried to do the right thing, and the universe kept sweeping the rug from under him.

There are more Xion fans on this site than people who dislike her, I'm certain of that. :/

Oh, sorry: just used to youtube where everyone hates on you for liking the "Mary Sue" :O

I don't get that labels meaning. It certainly doesn't describe Xion's character because, according to one interpretation, a "Mary Sue" character is a perfect character with all the likability and almost no draw backs. Something I woundn't necessarilyassociate with anybody in that KH universe. That said, I think that every character has had their fair share of tragedy. If I were to rank on a scale of Tragineain to Happy go lucky it would beNamineRoxasVanitasXionRiku ReplicaTerraAquaVentusRikuSoraKairiDonald GoofyMickeywith Xehanort at the bottom for causing all the sadness to the heroes and villains of the whole series.

Everyone says Xion and Roxas, but I just don't feel for them much. I mean Xion may be gone, but at least she gets to live on someone's Heart. I think for me, either Terra or Eraqus. Eraqus, because hardly anyone seems to give a rats hind quarters about him, just for the simple fact that he made a mistake. And Terra, because no matter what he did to be worthy, it was always wrong to someone else. He got screwed over horribly, and is still in bad shape. Those two are like tragic Shakespeare characters, seriously.

I find it hard to feel bad for Eraqus because he's the one guy in BBS who really shoulda known better. He's been a Keyblade master for decades, and he's firsthand experienced Xehanort abusing the powers of darkness, and yet he implicitly trusts him and invites him to his home where one of his apprentices is already struggling with his own darkness. It's really hard for me to feel bad for that kind of stupid.

(I do feel for Terra though, his was the most understandable story.)

That's what makes him so pitiful in my eyes. He valued a past relationship over a current dilemma. Xehanort delivered ALL the warning signs, and even straight up TOLD Eraqus that he had bad intentions, yet Eraqus let himself  believe that it was just some phase, and put the incident out of his mind. I used to think it was straight up idiotic, until I realized that maybe he did so because he truly couldn't except the fact that the man he grew up with had become so corrupted. He wanted to believe there was some good still there, and ended up paying the price for his own delusions. :(

That's a good point, actually. I kinda wish they'd gone more into Eraqus' and Xehanort's past relationship to convey that a bit better, because that's actually pretty deep. Maybe they'll being that up somehow in KH3?

Man, I sure hope so. In fact, I wouldn't mind if the entire opening of KH3 was dedicated solely to Young Xehanort's arrival at the Land of Departure, and his  interaction with the people there. I think many questions would be answered, and we'd get a better understanding of who he really was as a young person.

I would love more Young Xehanort in general. I haven't watched the Re:Coded cutscenes in 2,5 yet, but I hear he shows up in a meaningful way, and I'd love that kind of stuff, to actually show him before he was corrupt and evil. YX has the potential to be the saddest/most tragic character.

True that, especially if the rumor that he was once possessed by the 6th Follower, is true. That would mean that he spent the better half of his life growing into a vengeful old man, against his inner will? Who knows. I personally suggest following the Chi events......they really are beginning to shed some strange light...

A Mary Sue can also be a term for a character that is flat and has nothing to add to the story, a mere plot device.

Honestly, Isa.

Not kidding. He had no shred of happiness for 10 years. He experienced nothing but stress, overwork, charades, lies and had all his hopes completely lost in the end. There's no deny his death as Saix was particularly sad to watch.

It's a bit understandable why he was sore against Xion and Roxas. Yeah I know he was a jerk, no doubts, drop your knives, but you see there's a thing:

He was replaced by his only friend.

Replacement is a horrible feeling, no one ever wants to experience that. Really, ever.

And what makes extra sad is how Saix was constantly convincing himself he had no heart and denying how terrible he felt.

He got his heard back. With that price? To be involved into MX's scam again.

I agree with all of you about the characters you mentioned but they are no worse state than Isa's. Roxas, Ventus and Xion are comfy inside Sora, Namine got their trusts (and that's friggin heartwarming) and there's hope on Aqua. Isa has no hope, no friends, no one cares about him (or as he thinks, understandable as Axel completely left him alone to root) and several characters (specially Roxas, Sora and Kairi) hold a huge grudge against him.

I have absolutely no hope to see him alive in the end. The only hope is if Lea somehow manages to save him. But makes me feel it's already too late.

Roxas, all the points mentioned above and HE DIDN'T EVEN GET TO FINISH HIS SUMMER :

I'd have to say Sora, because behind all those smiles is a tinge of sadness, no matter how happy and positive you try to be. He was constantly reminded in DDD his heart is a prison and then his meeting with Roxas led him to experience all the sadness and loss that Roxas experienced. I think there was another time in Re:coded where he was trying to absorb the hurt of Terra, Ven, and Aqua but it was too much for him at the moment. Just think of all the hurt he will have to experience to get everyone's heart back into place. I just wonder to what limit his heart can handle that much sadness and hurt; it will be interesting. I just think Sora suffers the most and he did not become a Keyblade Master either; he constantly has to prove himself that he is strong for his friends and that he is okay.

All of you have made excellent entries in this topic, and I agree with you all.  All of these characters you've mentioned have been through so much.

Roxas's impending fate.

Namine's loneliness

Aqua's living hell.

Ven's comatose.

All of these characters have been through so much, it's heartbreaking!  I have to say that Xion has the most messed up tragedy of all these characters.  The poor girl was meant to be nothing more than a puppet to be used by the Organization.  The fact that she was erased from the minds of those who knew her was heart-wrenching.  But, I have two characters who I believe have also been through very much.

First off, there's Terra.  Dracozombie covered Terra pretty well, but I want to take my own spin on why I think he's one of the most tragic characters.  What makes Terra tragic is the fact that he was always being kept an eye on because of his darkness.  That discrimination and the fear of his power had to gnaw at Terra's heart. He knew he could control his darkness, all he had to do was keep a steady heart and master his darkness.  After failing the Mark Of Mastery exam, he set out to prove himself worthy of being a master, but in the process, his mind got clouded by Xehanort's machinations, and he was slowly torn apart from his friends, avoiding Ven and giving Aqua the cold shoulder. Xehanort fooled him into thinking that he actually cared for him, and well, the most heartbreaking thing of all is that he helped Master Xehanort kill Eraqus.  Granted, Terra only wanted to protect Ventus, and he didn't even know Xehanort was going to deliver the final blow, but still, what is more tragic than seeing the man who raised you die on your shoulders?  And that's an ever sadder fact!  The fact that he wasn't even able to embrace his Master in his final moments.  And if that's not tragic enough for you, try having your body possessed by a lunatic, with only a shred of your conscience remaining in your Keyblade Armor!  Now, Terra awaits the day when he'll be freed from Xehanort's bonds, so he can be able to set things right, just like he promised Ven and Aqua that he would!

And well, another character that comes into mind is Riku!  He let himself be succumbed to the darkness, and he ended up betraying his friends!  And then, when he was finally brought back to his senses and helped Sora and the gang close the door to Kingdom Hearts, there was no respite for him.  No, for when he arrived in Castle Oblivion, he had to live through his personal hell, as Ansem came back to haunt him.  Riku slowly overcame his own darkness, and decided that he'd end up locking Ansem in his heart!  And then, to help Sora awaken, he was willing to do whatever Diz would command of him!  When Diz told him that Roxas was the key to waking up Sora, Riku left without a word.  The most touching and tragic thing about Riku is the fact that he willingly sacrificed his own body, becoming darkness itself, to save his best friend, to give him the chance to awaken!  Even if he couldn't return to his original form, he was determined to do whatever he could to bring Sora back. Just imagine if Riku hadn't been able to return to his true self?  Imagine if he had decided to stay apart from Sora and friends, to let them assume he's dead? Thinking about that is really sad!  And well, that makes Riku a truly compelling character!

And people say video games aren't meaningful!  They're frickin emotional for crying out loud! D:

Honestly, Isa.

Aw man, I forgot all about Isa! DX Thinking about him and Lea just make me tear up....literally. There's nothing quite like a bond gone sour. And watching him get envious in Days? Too much.

Guys, it obviously Minnie, she's gone through so much, like that one hallway in KH II

LOLNO

I would say Auron, who the poop  wants to be Hades slave? :3

Repliku.

He was made to be evil. He was a tool to the organization just like Roxas, Namine, and Xion, except mattered way less. He ended up making the ultimate sacrifice for Sora and Namine, yet he's hardly mention. Dragged into a fight that wasn't his and punished for it. He's a martyr. In all honesty, the likelihood of him being 'saved' is very unlikely. Roxas, Namine, and Xion are Nobodies/replicas, but at least they look different enough to distinguish from the rest. Repliku looks just like Riku and it doesn't really make sense to have two Riku's. He was a plot device that will remain just that and nothing else.

Can we just call this thread "Ways to Make You Feel"?

Recently, I've been thinking about Isa's fate in all of Xehanort's BS. He's already been mentioned, but, seriously. He lost his only friend to Roxas and Xion (even though she's forgotten), Xemnas persuaded (well, sort of) him to join them and their real goal and Xigbar was stupid enough to keep following the old coot (he does have his own agenda though).

I really hope he gets to be normal again (sigh) and join the apprentices back at Radiant Garden. (Then have Ienzo give him a lecture...or not.)

Axel. He gets saddled with all the crappy jobs nobody else can take, only because he basically figures out the truth way before everybody else, loses all of his friends, and now apparently doesn't deserve to be his own person because Lea is a Somebody again and looks identical anyway.
