Discussion: what are the worst types of padding/filler you've seen?

Posted

Title says all.

EDIT: video games was what I had in mind when I posted this, but lol.

If you haven't seen Naruto Shippudden, at the moment the main characters are fighting for the fate of the entire world against a god-like being, and the show is going in to filler, this filler will be centered around the worst character in the show.

Death Note spending one full volume with subplots and back characters, then skipping to a year later was the crappiest padding I'd ever seen.

My own fanfics... Oh, and KH Chi.

All of the Final Fantasy VIII segments featuring Squall and his team. They really took the focus away from Laguna's team.

Not to be mean to anyone, but in my opinion, days was a glaring example of a filler game.

Oh, I think that the worst type of filler I've been witness to is in "The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya!"  There's a certain 8 Episode Arc that drives me crazy...because, well, let's just say that the same exact events happen for each of those 8 Episodes!  It was frustrating to watch, but after those 8 Episodes, I was happy!  I don't know if the manga has this same arc, but hell, it was one annoying filler! D:

mini games that overstay their welcome, scenes where characters constantly reiterate things the player has a full understanding of or plot points that seemingly bring about a change to the story but then wind up getting undone later for a contrived reason. Also fetch quests. Maybe tacked on multiplayer. That could be filler, I'd say.

Yup, pretty much this. If they really wanted to use this plot device, 3 or 4 episodes would've sufficed. But nope. They had to use 8. X_X I loved the show, but I still had trouble getting through all 8 episodes.

Since this thread is posted in Video Games, though, I'll give a game example. I've recently been playing through Bravely Default...

Very similar to Haruhi, in that the each of the last four chapters pretty much repeats the everything from the first four. Only four bosses are required to get through each chapter, but of course I've re-fought every single boss (around 20) because I'd feel unsatisfied if I didn't do the side quests when they're so easy to find. I've always loved boss fights, but this game has pushed me to my limit. All I have left is the bonus dungeon boss and the true final boss (and the Nemesis fights, but I'm probably just gonna skip them).

I like the plot ideas behind this, but I really think they should've shortened this segment of the game. Maybe only have 3 repeat chapters, and in the first two split the boss refights. Then the last of the three can do the same thing as chapter eight and have the boss gauntlet. They would have to change the extra scenes that give each boss new characterization, but honestly I think it would make the pacing better even if the side quests become longer because of it.

I love this game, but at this point I don't think I could ever replay it.

Oh yeah, I had read about that particular part of Bravely Default being agonizingly painful in Game Informer magazine one time!  That must be one hell of a trial to overcome!  Well, at least now I know what I'm up against when I get the game at some point. X3

And yeah, those 8 Episodes of Haruhi really killed what otherwise is a great, awesome anime with an awesome Dubbed cast! (JOHNNY YONG BOSCH, FTW!!!) I love the anime, but those 8 Episodes I really could do without. X_X

I've never had a problem with parts that are considered filler or padding by a lot of people in any games,to me they are just part of the game and if the game is fun,it doesn't matter. Parts like collecting the Trifoce pieces in Wind Waker, collecting the artifacts in the Metroid Prime games, collecting in DK64,Boss rush in every Mega Man games, the medals in Sonic Unleashed, etc. they don't bother me.

Assassin's Creed and its collectibles which absolutely bloat the map. The series no longer interests me since it has completely strived away from its original roots. It had potential but UbiSoft being the money-grubbers that they are, have to pump one out each year. In a way, I am glad that I'm done with the franchise. It saves me money anyway and I can get better games.
