What the hell Sakurai!? Yet ANOTHER Fire Emblem character when there's literally an entire ballot of other worthy characters to choose from to get some lime light!? THAT GAME ISN'T EVEN OUT YET!!!

 

I'm not so miffed at the fact that Sora or Snake didn't get in (well a tiny bit, but not nearly enough to eclipse this), but the sheer fact that we can only definitively say that at least one 3rd party character from the ballot got in but we won't know who even came second!? And for what, promoting a character who's title of debut isn't even out yet!? Yeah, I know they did that with Roy in Melee, but he already got put back in this game already, and with Lucina already in there with Marth and Ike it's already a crowded mess trying to compete with the Super Mario team, WHY ADD MORE!?

 

Maybe I'm not as hyped or as enraptured by this idea since I don't play the Fire Emblem games, but do even FE fans think this is a good idea? There's no reason to be invested or attached to this character yet other than the fact that there is a game coming out soon that may or may not be fun, and the character may or may not be interesting.

 

I mean, was making a 2'nd place ballot spot really so scary!?

 

Gahhh! I wouldn't be as upset with this if it weren't for the fact that there likely won't be any more DLC additions to this game from this point on, so the prospect of anyone new coming into the game is so low it's falling off the charts. I'm not boycotting the game or anything, I still love it, I don't think it's worthy of any pretentious kind of BS like that, but good god, of all the things I was so accepting of that didn't even involve any characters or franchises I was invested in, this one for some reason just jabs me the wrong way. I'd say I need a break from Smash if I was actually playing it for the past few months while I've been at college...but I haven't, so I think I might just need a break from the internet. I got to study anyway.

Apparently Sakurai really like Fire Emblem. Though, for a Nintendo franchise, I suppose it's forgiveable to have so many characters of the same game series.

Never gave any indication that I thought he was. My point is that someone else who WAS in the ballot behind Bayonetta could have and should have gotten in. Considering how they never gave any indication as to how many from the ballot would get in (never said ONE, never said 2, never said "no more than one", just didn't say anything beyond "vote for any character you want"), you can see as to why I would assume that there would be enough room for whoever won and whoever placed 2nd, right?

FE Fates is already out in Japan and coming out soon for western audiences so it would be perfect to add Corrin in the game for advertisement just in time for the western release of FE Fates. Also, Corrin plays differently compared to Marth, Lucina, Ike, and Roy so it's actually good to have someone who plays differently.

I have to agree with Hero of Light XIV here on the fact that someone else who was supposed to be next in line got palmed by a Fire Emblem character. Don't get me wrong, I love the Fire Emblem series but I think there are way too many FE characters in Smash.

 

But then again considering Nintendo owns FE as their own characters It'd be easier to include characters from Pokemon/Fire Emblem/Kid Icarus than to buy rights for say Solid Snake from Metal Gear solid (which is owned by Konami) or Sora (Technically owned by Disney and Square Enix but DIsney would never approve for their first born child with Square Enix to participate in the Rowdy Rumble.). Also consider the sour situation with Kojima and Konami - wanting to include a metal gear solid character might be treading on eggshells

I could not agree with you any more. You see, I have respect for Fire Emblem. What I don't have respect for is two Fire Emblem clones taking slots only to have another Fire Emblem character take a position that another niche Nintendo character deserves (Issac: Golden Sun).

Maybe I would support the anti-Corrin group if there was any reason to dislike him other than "another FE character!", "another swordsman!" or "shameless advertising and bias!" and of course "waste of a slot, Shovel Knight/Shantae/K.Rool/other character should have been added!".

 

Smash has always been used to promote recent games. a Mario Maker stage was added just to promote that game, yet no one accuses that as shameless advertising, Pit, Samus, Ike and Olimar were redesigned to match their most recent games, Link was slightly tweaked to better match his Skyward Sword design, Lucina, Robin and Greninja were added to help promote X/Y and Awakening, Sonic had his new voice actor and stage from Lost World added to the game.

 

Let's also remember that a lot of people originally wanted more Fire Emblem after Marth and Roy were put in Melee, even though they were Japan only, and those people are the reason why it still exists today. 

 

Seriously, I want a way to believe and understand you, but I can't find it.

While I'm a huge Fire Emblem fan I kind of think that the additional spot should've been a character from another series, not another Fire Emblem character.  It's just, there's so many FE characters already.  We've got Lucina, Marth, Robin, Roy, and Ike; adding another seems like overkill to me when there could be so many other characters added to the series, but I suppose that I kind of understand.  They are trying to market the new game, no doubt, and thus are pumping out a new character for free advertisement.  I also think that Catmaster had a lot of merit in what he said: it'd be cheaper for them to use a character that they already own than to buy the rights for one they don't.

Its crazy to think that there's more Fire Emblem rep in Smash then there's Zelda or Kirby characters.Mario and Pokemon I understand having so many characters because they are Nintendo's biggest series,but Fire Emblem,its a bit weird.

 

I don't really care about Corrin,but I don't mind to see him added because he looks like he's a very unique fighter and Smash 4's roater was already perfect at launch,most of the characters I really wanted were included and now with the DLC we got Cloud and Ryu,I couldn't be more happy.

Not really, I'm pretty sure that I'm clear with how I stated it. I said that there was a whole ballot to choose from of more worthy fighters, I never gave any indication that I thought that he might have been one of them. Kind of impossible to be in a popularity contest when your game wasn't even out while the polls were running.

Well whatever, not how it was meant to be interpreted. And yes, that's exactly my point. I admit that I had no frame of reference for expecting the top 2 to get in other than the fact that they never gave any indication as to how many would be allowed in, but it's still a reasonable...reason to have set up my expectations that high. Maybe in hindsight it would have been obvious that at least one would get in, but again, the addition of yet another FE fighter just felt so anti-climatic, especially since they were going on a role with 3rd party character after 3rd party character. And now there's no more chance of anyone else getting in. Unless they make a new Smash with even more roster space and even fewer 3rd party limitations.

smash 5 is probably going to happen and i'm ok with him since he is different from the other FE characters and sword fighters, but yeah they should have given more info for the ballot and i wish they would have went with a more recognizable/famous 3rd party character than bayonetta out of the choices.

I'm actually quite fine with Bayonetta getting in there, considering the move to make 2 Nintendo exclusive it was likely they had an eye on this from the beginning and were relying on fan feedback to know for sure if it was a good idea worth pursuing. I don't necessarily care about Corrin one way or the other, but the whole way in how it was handled, leaving him the last addition to cap off the dlc for the rest of the game felt anticlimactic. If Smash 5 does happen though, then it will likely become a mainstay series that Nintendo will try to keep a live with each new console generation, with or without Sakurai. I doubt any without Sakurai would hold the same charm necessarily, but I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to try.

it sounds like this direct was kind of a disappointment (which it was looking back to the pass announcements) to the majority. i think we hyped it up too much but why wouldn't we, all the past announcements were pure hype without a low point. but with this one it was like we were spoon fed 5 star meals our entire lives and then we get fed caned food. also sakurai said that he would be the only one doing the smash bros. games i think in a resent interview, plus in that same interview he said every time he says he doesn't want to do another one he ends up doing one, so thats why he isn't saying this is the last one. so people are saying that they might port smash 4 to nx which i hope they don't because that would mean we won't get smash 5 for awhile (its also a bad business decision)

Yeah I'd much rather have a new Smash that just goes beyond what this one did, just like how every successive Smash did from the previous generation. It wouldn't make since to just port something when you could make something even better than that with similar and improved ideas. Especially if people might want even more new characters to join the roster with the previous ones.

Goodness, there hasn't been this much backlash for character reveals ever since Dark Pit and Lucina were announced.
